I finally got my bandcamp page up with a little tune I wrote on my synth for a discord challenge based on a patch preset I’ve been playing around with for a few weeks:

Boyish by penguinmusic

@ewe2, I appreciate it that you keep the music at about the same level. Nothing jarring. All soothing. I think you deserve a big juicy apple apple01

Yes, the challenge was to write a calming piece and it was just by chance I’d been messing with this patch with the perfect qualities and my mind had been cooking up something in the background as I’d been trying out various progressions with it. I’d actually recorded an even better take than this one but somehow neglected to take the synth out of pause so after a bit of “ARGHH oh no i have to do it again it won’t be as good”, I recorded this take. My synth has a direct-to-sd card recording mode which is how I did it rather to a DAW (which might have been a better idea but I hadn’t expected to be recording anything, it was a moment’s whim), and I thought this was good enough to do something with so then I did take it to the computer, put it in the DAW and applied a really nice shimmer reverb which makes all the repeat-y stuff more repeat-y and echo-y. I’ve done some good stuff with this synth already  but this was an unexpected piece of good luck.

Now I have what I call a creative “hangover” where it’s difficult to not think about it and I have to look in other areas. I have an acoustic guitar-based song I’ve been working on and I’m waiting on a tin whistle I bought because I want to learn some tin whistle to see if I can play well enough for it and if not at least I have the synth to fall back on for some fake whistle a-hard-days-night-paul-10

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Well said @Ahhh Girl, I’m a fan as well ewe2 and listen to this type of music every day (my tv even has a music channel dedicated to it). Around the Boyish 2:00 mark reminds me of the intro to the Moody’s “Your Wildest Dreams” which I dig.

Interesting! Yeah its got that similar theremin with a delay-effect sound! Another similar sound that I reference is the counter-harmony to the lead in Cars by Gary Numan, this is more of a sawtooth+pwm+lfo kind of theremin-y sound but no less driving:

it’s not really online anywhere, but i once wrote a song about a werewolf and the title is lifted from the title of an early film adaptation of frankenstein.

i guess i should set up a signature soon? maybe?

I’m glad you liked it, NGL it wouldn’t’ve sounded nearly as good as it does if it weren’t for my singer being great at singing and mixing. In fact, this is the first thing i’ve ever released that sounds professional, whereas my older releases sound very DIY and lo-fi.

It really is a great recording, you should be proud of the result, I’m so impressed. Dang I’m really going to have to work on something good now, you’ve raised the bar highly my friend! john-lennon-salute_gif

Here is another little ditty cooked up for another challenge, this time for a hip-hop song: Penguin-rap.mp3. This was the first thing I did on my new maschine mk3 and while I could go back and mess with it, its fine as it is. It’s a homage to Prince really. I miss that dude.  Yes that is me rapping. And, to quote my favourite youtube bassist Adam Neely, repetition legitimizes. REPETITION LEGITIMIZES. ahdn_john_08_gifahdn_john_08_gif

I dig it @ewe2, dramatic and funny at the same time. I’m gonna pull up my hoodie and take a waddle round the hood.

A little off topic, but I was thinking the other day about a local club that sponsored a Battle of the Bands show every summer. All the local bands would show up over a Saturday and play a few songs. The audience would choose a fav at the end of the day and that band would be the show opener for the rest of the summer. Maybe our forum musicians could submit a song for consideration and we could choose a fun fav to be the honorary forum performer/house band for the year. Maybe the entries could be the basis for the Forum Greatest Hits album we were discussing elsewhere.

Do you think that would be something?

That brightened my afternoon! Has a similar brand of self-awareness that George’s songs had. Sounds you like a great time recording that one!

I’d prefer no rules, but we’ll probably need a special pass from Joe to sponsor something like this if It isn’t Beatles related. The Battle of the Bands I’m referring to was very loose. Sometimes band members wouldn’t show up, so someone from another band would fill in.

I’m not currently much capable of making new music since I’m not at home, so I probably won’t be able to participate, but this seems like a great idea!
