Yeah, the rhythm is off kilter in such a cool way. And the gleefully juvenile pottymouth lyrics are dumb fun in a kinda snotty new-wave way. I think Controversy and 1999 are my favourite of his albums.

Haha yeah, and really in-your-face-but-right-on-the-beat jump cuts too!
But no, I really like those more weirdo Prince deep tracks, like "Annie Christian", "Darling Nikki" and the ones on 1999's second LP

Love all of those, but my personal favourite is the ballad of Dorothy Parker...classy or what...?
Perhaps you've seen this before but I'm sure it's well worth another look....

@VeraChuckandDave So many legends in one video, and Prince kicks the most ass out of all of them.
The Ballad of Dorthy Parker is a very classy one indeed.

I'm interested in getting into Prince properly. Can people recommend me his best tracks and albums?
“While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I’m a naysayer and hatchet man in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I’ll gladly take another - because I choose to live my life in the company of Ghandi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. I love you, Sheriff Truman.”

Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the life of the one, the only, Prince.
He may have been gone for 2 years now, but his spirit lives on through his music

Many are unaware that Prince was also a badass bassplayer. He played bass on so many of his own tracks and those he made for others it's probably impossible to separate performances from samples etc. For this reason I'm particularly fond of his "simplistic" style in songs like Lady Cab Driver and he absolutely knew when to drop it out altogether which for me is a supreme test of songwriting and arranging.
So many examples, but take the ATWIAD album: listen to the song Paisley Park, no bass and practically a guitar solo the whole way. Or just Raspberry Beret off the same album, listen to how sparingly the lowest notes are used, giving full space to the snare and everything in between, particularly the mid-section where you're not even sure of the chord changes. This taken to the extreme in the very next track, Tambourine, I love the call and response in that. I think I like Parade a little better in production terms, but this style is in every album somewhere.
As a producer he was peerless, he had his own distinct drum sound and effect preferences, and it's safe to say that he alone designed the sound of his albums. I'm sure he was also a master of slow ballads but because I run a mile from that style I'm no judge of them 😀 Speaking of segues, New Position into I Wonder U that album was full of them.

Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

A good place to start is the 1993 3CD compilation The Hits/The B-Sides. While by no means comprehensive -- there are some obvious absences -- and its inclusion of several songs in their original single edits annoys some (something that's never bothered me as I bought the single edits and am happy to have them on CD), it's easily the best Prince compilation around, with the third disc essential for the 20 b-sides and rarities that are difficult to find elsewhere.
It's a good overview of his career up to that time, with only one album (the Batman soundtrack) not represented, so can point the way to albums you might be interested in exploring further.

@Ron Nasty Couldn't have said it any better. The Hits and The B-Sides is a great way to start out.
By the way, I finally bought Purple Rain Deluxe. Sound Remastering is excellent and the rarities are awesome
