Hell yeah. You can learn a lot of funk from him. I like to cite Housequake as an example of reminding us that rap/hiphop came from funk, which in turn suggest James Brown, and then you realize “oh its all the same thing from different angles”. Well ok that’s what it did to me. One of the best concerts I ever went to was Prince back in ’92 or so when he came out to Australia after the Symbol album. I love heaps of his stuff.
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

It was the first time he’d come here, he came back 3 times after that but I missed them all 🙁

I like Dirty Mind a lot and don’t mind that it’s only a half hour long. My big complaint about it is (now I sound like Dark Overlord) is the lack of acid-rock guitar blowouts! One of the great things about Prince was his guitar w*****g, and DM stands alone in the discography as lacking even a single “Bambi”-style guitar showcase.

Extremely underrated guitarist, in my opinion… A Modern-Day Jimi Hendrix in the technical finesse department… Many wonder what Jimi Hendrix would’ve come up with had he had the same tech available to him as those today… Just listen to Prince play…
I’m no fanatical, but Prince was one of those who just didn’t go away… My favourite track of his is a ‘Purple Rain ‘ b-side… ‘Erotic City’… this was a HUGE club hit in the 80’s… it wasn’t easy to find the ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ 45rpm single either, but I landed a copy for it was one of those that I just had to have… My favourite album was the soundtrack to the other movie that he made which, to this day, I’ve yet to view… ‘Mountains’ was fantastic…:-)

@Billy Rhythm I absolutely agree with you, Prince is what Hendrix could’ve done in the 80’s and 90’s. Let’s Go Crazy has some of the greatest guitar work ever.
I have yet to see Under The Cherry Moon in its entirety but i wasn’t too invested. Although i have heard it is interesting as it goes on

Was a huge fan in the 80’s. Prince was such a prolific composer and had such a unique sound. His guitar playing was incredible and he certainly deserved to be up there beside many of the greats. The around the world in a day, parade and sign o the times albums were, in my opinion, him at his best as they demonstrated his ability to entertain us with such a diversity of musical styles. His music had such complex, intricate arrangements and vocal harmonies to die for (loved the atonal stuff)!!
I also think both Raspberry beret and little red corvette sound vaguely beatley….

those 3 albums are great choices. I don’t hear too many Prince fans talk about ATWIAD. It is such an Underrated Prince album

Purple rain, although a hugely successful album, was very commercial aimed at the masses and perhaps, with ATWIAD, more of the same was expected. Personally I’m glad that Prince didn’t take that route and his music matured so much over the next few years.

Yeah, I remember the big critical excitement/scorn among the rock press at the time when they learned that, with ATWIAD, Prince had finally, officially gone PsYCheDeLIc! as in ’67 Beatles/Hendrix. (“Fine with me!” said 17yo VB, aspiring rockthinker.) And its certainly a weird one. And the dude was still incapable of not providing at least one absolute smash hit pop masterpiece – was there anybody since the Beatles who simultaneously peaked in inventiveness/on the popcharts? (as represented here by the best berry hit since…)
…anyways, just like on the Zombies thread a coupla weeks ago, I’m always happy when a thread motivates me to re-listen to an old favourite or two. (Presently following up ATW with Controversy)

Controversy is probably my 2nd favorite Prince album. The title track might be my favorite Prince song. Jack U Off from the album i always thought was a pretty underrated Prince song
