Technical request: could you move the cowbell slightly closer to centre? It sounds a little bit asymmetrical.  

Ah, I was afraid someone would ask that. The answer is, not totally, and for a couple of good reasons. The point of the cowbell joke is that too much cowbell means it becomes too noticeable. Cowbell’s great but it’s not subtle. Either I move it to the side or I pull it wayyy down in the mix so it doesn’t become really irritating. On top of that, I bounced @Dark Overlord ‘s tracks together after first fixing some timing issues, which means having to do that all over again just to put the cowbell somewhere else in the mix. So I’ve compromised and most of the cowbell is closer to the centre and quieter. Another alternative is to cut it up and put it in the sections where the tamborine isn’t, I might try that and see what it sounds like.

My plan for mixing this song was to get several elements together as I went, like they actually did on Sgt Peppers. I will have to go back and unexplode the main instrument track for when we get a piano and guitar dub, but that won’t be as troublesome. Bouncing stuff together actually helps with getting the mix right, so no wonder they made a habit of it.

Here’s a screenshot of the work so far. At the top you can see the bounce of @Dark Overlord’s instruments, under that is a bounce of his and my vocals (and kazoo) in the “billy shears” intro, then the backing and main vocals, both in dry and reverbed versions to A/B it, then a bounce of the main instrument track, @Martha’s tambourine, and a bunch of mix/edits after that. There is a tiny bit of timing I have yet to fix near the beginning but it has to wait until a finished mix so i can just slightly edit it. And then I get to take bits of it all to master in another editor  All rather fun, really!

I’ve been really impressed with the quality of effort from everyone so far, most of the work for me has been polishing timing and mixing, the actual sounds have been well recorded. And now that we have a few more budding guitarists, there’s not going to be much excuse for not putting together something really noisy and fun in the future!

You guys don’t have to if you don’t want to but would you like to add bass, drums, vocals, and French horn to my cover of Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, I was hoping we could do a BB cover for both songs and mix them 2 separate ways, one way as separate songs and the other way as a medley. If you guys would rather not then I think I’ll record the rest of the parts myself and do something with it.

And towards that aim, here is Version 4 mix 3 incorporating @Beatlebug  vocals and guitar!
