Drums!!!Is that better, @ewe2?
Thanky, that will top up my addiction for now
That mix sounds drastically closer to the White Album mix. Apart from some EQ on the guitar, what else did you do to make it sound the way it does compared to mix 6?
I fixed some panning issues to start with (both guitars are on the right, the “lead” further out, the bass and drums are on the left) and as you mention a bit of EQ tweaking, but my favourite toy of the moment is the Calf multiband compression plugin for Audacity. This lets me boost the sub and the mid ranges and gives an EQ that sounds a bit like the “Techno” setting of your average player eq, so you feel the thump of the kick drum and bass a bit more and holds the midrange down without cranking the upper range on top of what I’ve already EQ’d. Taking the edge of the vocals helps too, it’s not as nicely clear as the original as I like but that original is surprisingly dark anyway, the real trick to that track is how its reverbed. I’ve mixed a reverb vocal alongside a clean one and I’ll be doing a similar thing to the drums, the vocals are a little to the right with the reverb across from the left and the drums are the other way, at least I hope that’s what will come out.
Also, completely off topic, I figured out the solo to Hey Bulldog yesterday on my trusty SG and I’m blown away by how simple and effective it is.

Wow, that explained a lot of stuff! The vocals seemed different, I’m glad it wasn’t my imagination. But there’s so many things that you’re doing to this track, ewe2 Martin! I like the plan for the reverb – will you do the same for the guitar part that does the

Mix 2 See what you think of the “weird bass” I did there. I love the drumming, we can’t all be Ringo but gee you can get close to a softsynth beat and still sound human. I went a bit overboard, there’s slapback delay AND reverb AND some toppy EQ to bring out the top of the snare and cymbals. The delay is a little strange but makes a nice mess when things get busy (you can hear some charming artifacts in the right channel, that’s not backwards thats the delay feeding back!). In my opinion its the slappy echo/reverb on the drums that makes it sound like the guitar has a bit of reverb on it in the original, but we really don’t need it though and might muddy things up trying to compete with reverb drums and voc als.

Wow, @ewe2 and @the-hoe-got-fixed, it’s sounding good! I’ll have another bash at handcaps soon, hopefully they’ll work this time.
Edit: Sorry THGF, my L is sticky today

It’s ok @beatebug, no hard feelings!
Goodness, the delay was doing my head in, I couldn’t work out if you’d used the 2nd drum part I recorded, or if it was a very thick delay you’d added…

Wow, thank you! I’m very surprised you liked it that much. I listened to that softsynth beat god knows how many times, so I’m not surprised I mimicked it well…

I have used that 2nd drum part in parts, you can tell because I deliberately left it centre-panned. Even though the delay is weird, its nicer than the stock-standard kind of reverb usually employed, just pretend its a really long tape echo (the plugin actually mimics one).

Mix #3 So I went back to the drawing board and changed my approach, tried a different reverb technique on the drums and stereo echo on the mix to widen the sound a bit, and I’m happier with the bass break now. It sounds a bit phased tho so I might tone that echo down a bit for the next mix, it sounds fine in audacity but mp3 format doesn’t like it too much.

Ahhh @ewe2, that’s sounding much better. I have to admit the last mix I listened to was very sloppy-sounding in a messy reverb kind of way. It’s tightened up a bit and less doing-in of the head.
And my L has had the kinks worked out of it, too!

Sounding better all the time!Personally, both the drums and the guitar sound a bit tinny, but that might be personal preference
This is the curse of mixing reverb, it’s easily overdone and then you get a foggy sound or you try and compensate and it sounds more brittle. I worry more about the way the drums sound than guitar as a rule, and as long as there’s clarity there’s a lot of preferences after that.

OK new mix! Got the dreaded SG handclaps and I’ve sharpened them, thrown a bit of tape echo on and they help the snare out really well!

Also did some fooling around with the cmons and moved some things around, the rhythm guitar wasn’t really working on the right hand side so I moved it in near the centre and it cuts through much better.

Wow, the guitars work so well! I’ve only just heard how intricate the part is, wow! And the c’mons are quite interesting too!
One suggestion: The drums sound like I’m about 100 metres away, in a sewer. If it doesn’t sound like that for you, then it’s my headphones, and that’s entirely possible. But I don’t know how that would be fixed if it’s not just me, and other people think so too…
Overall, it’s sounding good, but IT NEEDS MORE CMONS!!!Let’s go people…

Like I said, it’s the curse of reverb and because the drums are all in one track I can’t separate the EQ as much as I’d like. @Beatlebug ‘s claps have really helped out the snare, so I might try to find the kick and boost that a little, but where it is in the mix is pretty good considering the blizzard of stuff competing with it.

This pushes the rhythm guitar back a bit but the kick is there now.

Wow, my handclaps are so huge, it makes the drums sound like they were recorded by John Bonham at the top of a flight of stairs in Headley Grange
(I did the recording in a fairly large, fairly un-sound-insulated room, but I didn’t realise it picked up that well.)

There seems to be something slightly off between the vocal, rhythm guitar, and drums on verse one that magically goes away for the other two verses.
Edit: well not magic, its @ewe2 production ability.

After I boosted the high mids and cut the bottom, the room ambience really leapt out, which inspired me to put it alongside the snare and so begat monster snare!
A list of who did what so far, corrections appreciated:

I looked into this and its most likely my shambolic rhythm guitar which doesn’t perfectly follow the original, I like it although against the drums it’s a little squishy. My rhythm guitar heroes are Frank Black, Malcolm Young and John Lennon (with honorable Kurt Cobain mention) so there’s a good spectrum of super strong to shambolic there

I did cmons, not swr. And I did the bass fill before the quiet section (I still can’t tell if you decided it was useable to double track or not, the production is so good)
