It’s getting on that time of year. Tomorrow is October!! I’m in the mood for creepy and scary, so I thought I’d create a topic for some fun. What songs do you find the most creepy / scary? Disturbing would fit too… twisted even. I’ll start with a couple. I won’t bog down things with video embeds, but go ahead and You Tube these. If you dare…

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy Jr.

Off his album “Illinois” and yes, it’s about the serial killer.  “They were boys with their cars, summer jobs, oh my God !” gives me the chills every single time.

Radiohead – Climbing Up The Walls. Thom Yorke wrote this about his time working in a mental hospital. “It’s always best when the light is off. It’s always better on the outside. Fifteen blows to the back of your head, fifteen blows to your mind.” This one always gives me an uneasy feeling.

Oh, I’ve got more. I’ll be back soon.

Blue Jay Way and the end of Long, Long, Long are pretty creepy with the lights out.

*proceeds to flood thread with Pink Floyd because I can*

Also creepy with the lights out are ‘One Of These Days’, ‘On The Run’, ‘Careful With That Axe, Eugene’, ‘and the latter half of ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’ by Pink Floyd — the last song being especially suited to a haunted house theme. ‘Jugband Blues’ is haunting, especially if you know anything about Syd Barrett.

Most of the Radiohead stuff I’ve heard (which consists almost exclusively of the In Rainbows album) was pretty neurotic — one that sticks out is ‘Weird Fishes’.

‘Map Of The Problematique’ by Muse is also kind of unsettling, though it might be too upbeat to be properly scary. I mostly mentioned it cos I’m very fond of it. ahdn_george_06

Oh I agree with those Floyd choices! Particularly “Eugene…” THAT SCREAM! Every single time. LOL!

When I was little Blue Jay Way kind of unsettled me, I didn’t like it.

Here are a couple more:

Bloodrock – D.O.A. I remember that coming on the radio late one night. I had dozed off and was still in half-sleep. The siren sound and just everything. Brings to mind another one you don’t want to have on as you’re drifting off to sleep, nor wake up to it… Tool’s “Faiip de Oiad”.

Anything by Slayer or Black Sabbath should do the trick or if you want a real scare, blast the Justin Bieber song Baby. Everybody will be running like as if they’re being chased by Leatherface.

Mother from JL/POB scares me sometimes. It’s the screaming at the end, especially the last audible one before the fade-out ends the song. You probably need headphones to hear it, as it’s pretty quiet. I’m kind of sensitive to raised voices. a-hard-days-night-ringo-14

And, to a lesser extent, My Mummy’s Dead can be a little scary. I think it’d work well in a horror movie soundtrack, in the moment when the killer/monster/thing is slowly nearing the victim, and the song could end a few seconds before the jumpscare. a-hard-days-night-john-6

Another one that isn’t necessarily as scary as it is kind of unsettling: Friends by Led Zeppelin. I dunno, the guitar and strings always seemed kind of “off”, and the neeeoooorrrnnnnmmmmmmmmmnerooooorrrommmm of the Moog at the end that leads into Celebration Day always felt strange. a-hard-days-night-paul-10

Heheheheeeee, if I didn’t know Roger’s middle name was Roger, I’d have said it was Creepy. George Roger Waters can do creepy like no one else, especially when he screams. Or grins, for that matter. a-hard-days-night-paul-10 (Poor guy can’t help having scary teeth, I suppose.)

Erm, back to the topic…

Maxwell’s Silver Hammer is obviously disturbing if you listen to the lyrics.

Revolution 9  manages to scare me pretty good.

Also The Elements: Fire off of The Beach Boys ‘ SMiLE is scary in a similar way.

When I first listened to Revolution 9 it was on the way home from a vacation in a car in the middle of the night.  Pretty much everyone was out of it, and it was me and my dad(the driver) who were basically awake.  The dark outside and the silence in the car just made the whole song super creepy.

I’m going to say Epitaph by King Crimson.  There’s some very spooky mellotrons in there.

Also, a number of Doors songs come to mind.  Most notably, The End , The Soft Parade, Peace Frog, and Not to Touch the Earth.

Agree on Fire. Also, related to that, I find Fall Breaks of Smiley Smile a bit creepy as well.
Never learn not to love is also one, which has more to do with the person who wrote the majority of the lyrics than the song itself.
And then there’s a shitload of Beach Boys songs that are creepy for different reasons.

I find Mama by Genesis to be a bit unsettling and Echoes by Pink Floyd used to weird me out as a kid.

Mama is definitely a very creepy song. It’s the way Phil does that “haha HA!” saying “I won’t hurt you, mama, but it’s getting so hard…” *shudders*

If we are talking about The Doors, how about ‘When The Music’s Over’? Particularly…

What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down

Once, while in high school, a friend and I were chatting up a couple of honeys while this song was playing on my friend’s boom box. When the part I cited above came on, they got creeped out and left in a hurry. It’s a good thing I eventually met a nice girl who likes The Doors as much as I do.

The Beatles never freaked me out. But Pink Floyd has a few times. “Several species…” from Umma Gumma scared a whole bar one time when I found it on a juke box. There are some pieces on 2001 A Space Odyssey soundtrack that are totally psychotic in a dark room. Or…. try on Krzysztof Penderecki for a scare fest. Woooooo!

I think this is what Lennon thought of when he wanted Tomorrow Never Knows to be sung by a thousand monks on a mountain top! Boo!

More!

Kim by Eminem is horrifying. Only heard once, don’t ever want to hear again.

Country Death Song by The Violent Femmes.  Murder-suicide!

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. This badass song is based on a tritone… what 18th century composers called diabolous in musica… the devil in music. The flattened fifth.  This song sets the hairs on the back of my neck on end every single time.

Frankie Teardrop by Suicide. Another murder-suicide song… this one I could only listen to once and I don’t think I ever will again, it’s still with me. Holy crap.

And I’ll include this video too, because… woah.

The DEEIIIRRRDREEEEEE from the beginning of Deirdre (a-hard-days-night-john-7) by The Beach Boys is a little unsettling. More so after you listen the song from Earthbound that sampled it. a-hard-days-night-ringo-12

Actually it’s one of those online Mafia Juke boxes that charge you double if you don’t play their pre-selected drivel. I was looking at Floyd and saw Umma Gumma and played “Several Species…” for a lark. The Lady Gaga fans there deMANDED that it be taken off immediately! OMG, This is horrible! LOL! Should have played #9 along with it…

I played a 20 minute Grateful Dead jam on a jukebox out of pure surprise that it was on there. It was Estimated Prophet.

That song is kind of spooky, along with a lot of Dead songs. I would describe their sound as sort of a spooky one.
