While listening to CBC Radio 2 earlier this week, and I heard Whitehorse's excellent rendition of Bruce Springsteen's I'm On Fire. And from there, I thought, what about a thread on the BB? So, what are some of music's greatest covers? A few that come to mind: (original artist in brackets)

  • John Cale – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
  • CSNY – Woodstock (Joni Mitchell)
  • Neil Young – Oh Lonesome Me (Don Gibson)
  • Eric Clapton – I Shot The Sheriff (Bob Marley)

So, what are some of your favourites?

As if it matters how a man falls down.'

A few cliché answers that I agree with:

All Along The Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix Experience

Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley (though I prefer Cale's cover)

I Fought The Law- The Clash

Also, a few Beatley ones:

If Not For You George Harrison

Got My Mind Set On You- George Harrison

Stand By Me John Lennon

Ain't That A Shame- John Lennon

Twist And Shout – The Beatles

Shake, Rattle And Roll/Rip It Up/Blue Suede Shoes- The Beatles

Act Naturally – The Beatles

Day Tripper – Jimi Hendrix

Regina Spektor- Real Love

Norwegian Wood – Cornershop

Beyond those, I'd like to mention “Quicksand” by Dinosaur Jnr. Can you count songs covered by artists who actually wrote them? If so, I'd count several Dylan and Bowie numbers among my favourites.

I told her I didn’t

Got My Mind Set On You and the John Cale version of Hallelujah in particular though already mentioned.

The Roxy Music version of Jealous Guy . The Fine Young Cannibals version of Suspicious Minds.

"Now and then, though, someone does begin to grow differently. Instead of down, his feet grow up toward the sky. But we do our best to discourage awkward things like that."

"What happens to them?" insisted Milo.

"Oddly enough, they often grow ten times the size of everyone else," said Alec thoughtfully, "and I’ve heard that they walk among the stars."

Totally agree on Pet Shop Boy’s cover of Always On My Mind.

A few others not mentioned above:

It Ain’t Me Babe – Johnny Cash and June Carter (original: Bob Dylan)

The Great Pretender – Freddie Mercury (original: The Platters)

One – Kendall Payne (original: U2)

You Cant Hurry Love – Phil Collins (original: The Supremes)

This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You) – Rod Stewart in 1974 (not the version on Atlantic Crossing or the 80’s duet with Ronald Isley but the studio outtake released on the Sessions boxset) (original: The Isley Brothers)

Little Red Rooster – The Rolling Stones (original: Howling Wolf)

And a few beatles/beatles related not mentioned

Anna (Go To Him) (original: Arthur Alexander)

Words Of Love (original: Buddy Holly)

Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying (original: Ray Charles (i think but could be an earlier version by someone else))

Let It Be Me – George (most famous thru Everly Brothers but apparently was originally in french and then translated in french for some tv programme)

Bring It On Home To Me – John (original: Sam Cooke)

Be My Baby – John (original: The Ronettes)

Till There Was You (original: presumably The Beatles knew the film version with Shirley Jones singing it. I used to dislike this but its really blossomed over the years)

"I told you everything I could about me, Told you everything I could" ('Before Believing' - Emmylou Harris)

My favorite cover songs to be recorded by The Beatles have to be:

Dizzy Miss Lizzy “, “Roll Over Beethoven “, “Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby”, “Matchbox “, “Slow Down “, “Bad Boy “, “Honey Don't”, “Anna (Go to Him)”, “Till There Was You “, “Twist And Shout “, “Boys “, “Act Naturally “, “Chains “…

Those are the once I like best!

I'm not sure about other people covering The Beatles, except The Fab Four, an American tribute band for The Beatles imitating them very well both vocally, by instruments, their clothing and sound.

"Real music is made by real people playing real instruments using own creativity and skills."

Atlesbe, Just listened to Jamie Cullum’s “Wind Cries Mary

Sounds like Jimi Hendrix meets Michael Buble. Personally, I miss the guitar.

The best covers of Beatle songs IMO are Judy Collins’s “In My Life ” and Ritchie Havens’s “Eleanor Rigby ” (though I couldn’t find the latter on iTunes or youtube). If anybody finds it, let me know.

The Animals did a cover of Ring Of Fire ,

I love it like Johnny Cash version .

And also another amazing cover of Nowhere Man by The Carpenters.

My favourite cover is definitely the wings version of go now (I don’t know who recorded it originally even the moody blues version is a cover)

I’m pretty sure “Go Now” was credited to Denny Laine, which is why they played the song on the Wings Over America tour.

It might the only hit song of the Moody Blues written by Laine (someone on the Forum will surely look this up!).

I always liked it. As a kid, I played it for my father figuring he’d like the piano. (He looked down on the Beatles and everything connected to them.)

I looked it up and it turns out Go Now was written by Larry Banks and Milton Bennett (not sure who they are) but it was originally recorded by Bessie Banks. Denny Laine heard it and decided that the Moody Blues should record it. I guess that’s why he performed it with Wings as well.

Wow, I always thought that “Go Now” was a Laine original too!

Not exactly a Beatles cover, but I might as well mention Sam Philips’ version of John Lennon ‘s “Gimme Some Truth “, since it concludes her somewhat Beatlesque album “Martinis and Bikinis” – my very favourite album of the 1990s.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Maybe I’m Amazed by Welsh singer Jem. Very different from the original, but one of my favorites:

The Clash’s I Fought The Law of course, and Green Day’s I Fought The Law. It’s actually really great.
