So, is it worth having this if I already have Yellow Submarine  and all the others? I’ve been wondering about getting it, but I do have a few albums definitely ahead of it.

EDIT: 750 for Rishikesh! One away from the big time! (Though it is 250 more posts)

Its worth having the Songtrack as the songs themselves were remixed in 1999 from the original master tapes. If you mean if its worth having the 2012 issue then no, not unless you want the new packaging as the tracks haven’t been touched so are in no way different to the 1999 release.

Agreed.  That said, it really does sound fantastic and some of the mixes are interesting.  I expect to see them try and sell us remixes of all the original albums at some future date.  They will suck me in on some of the early ones if they do (the ones with the vocals off to one side).

If they offered remixed versions of the original albums I’d buy them, seeing as I didn’t buy the remasters.

Just to possibly muddy the waters further: I just bought YSS in digipack, but the only date mentioned anywhere on the pack is 1999. Is this still the 2012 release as Amazon state?

The digipack is the rerelease, the ’99 release came in the plastic boxes. The digipack will be to bring it into line with the remasters. Note that the rerelease is not remastered regardless of what is said.

Ah, great, thanks MMM. Means I don’t have to send it back again – last time I ordered it came in the jewel case, despite the webpage saying 2012 (the perils of buying from Amazon marketplace sellers)

According to Sean Egan in ‘The Mammoth Book of the Beatles’:

“Some reviewers sycophantically hailed this [YSS] as an advance which polished The Beatles music for the more sophisticated palette developed by the public in the age of the compact disc. In fact, the results are dreadful…
…Remixers Peter Cobbin, Paul Hicks and Mirek Stiles present clinical, artificial-sounding versions of the warm, natural-sounding Beatles tracks we have known for so many years… In some cases – notably ‘Hey Bulldog ‘ – the results are either incompetent or deliberately provocative: for instance, why on earth are they artificially bringing forward the occasional slap of a drum in the soundscape, as though trying to jolt us out of whatever reverie we can manage?
…Those who object to the remixing here are not luddites. Yellow Submarine Songtrack manages a feat that previously seemed impossible: making the original Yellow Submarine album sound like a masterpiece…
Incidentally, for the record, the George Martin material could have fitted onto the CD as well.”

I’ve only listened once so far, so haven’t formed any definitive opinion – but, really, is it that bad and misguided?

No. Its a mixed bag where some of the remixes will work and some won’t depending on your liking – some fans hate that it changed the mixes that the Beatles released in the 60’s (viewing such an act as heresy) whereas other love that it changed the mixes that the Beatles released in the 60’s (forward thinking from Apple, exactly what the music needs, didnt go far enough).

For what its worth i posted this earlier on in this thread, i haven’t played it thru for a long time.

The YSS is certainly worth getting but, certainly for me, its impact has lessened since the remasters came out in 2009 as the sound quality on the remasters is so much clearer than the ’87 cds we had to bear with for years.

Some of the remixes are better than the original mixes in my opinion (Love You To which sounds fabulous remixed, Eleanor Rigby has Pauls vocal centered) but some are not (Hey Bulldog, Lucy In The Sky).

I found the The Mammoth Book of the Beatles analysis of the albums and singles to be dreadful. I read that section over a period of time in Waterstones for free as i figured it had to get better as it went on and it didn’t, recently came across it on sale for £5 in a bookshop and refused to spend the money.

Yes, it’s extremely patchy (though there are good and interesting parts, to be fair). I bought it only because it was £2 in HMV, (closing down), and I like to add to my Beatles paraphernalia when possible, (especially when cheap). It’s supposed to be a rich anthology, but in fact most of the articles and reviews are written by Egan himself. It does have a usefully fulsome discography at the back, mind you.

He is similarly cynical about the Anthology CDs, stating that they could have been limited to a reasonably epoch-encompassing double or triple CD while jettisoning much ‘chaff’. But that’s for another thread…

Didnt/doesnt he pretty much slate Beatles For Sale ? I just remember reading it thru and getting more annoyed as it seemed to be less analytical and more ‘i like it so its getting a good write-up’.

For myself I found the album amazing at first hearing. Imagine if someone did a decent stereo remaster of Rubber Soul . I’m less certain it would be a good idea for other albums. I don’t have a beef with the remixes, and it’s inevitable they will be at some point.

Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

As noted above I think the most benefit would come on the early albums to create a more ‘natural’ sounding mix, rather than all the vocals off to one side.

Agreed, that’s what I most like about the treatment of Drive My Car , and I’d love a similar mix for The Word .

My problem with this album is that they screwed with the track order, this could’ve been a much better album had they not done that.

I grew up on this album so it’s embedded in my childhood, but objectively I’d agree with DO.

It took me forever, when I got the original albums, to overwrite my song-order-expectations.

I think @Dark Overlord’s complaint, @Beatlebug, is not the difference between the albums but that the Songtrack is not in the order the songs appear in the film.

That’s what I understood it to be, I was simply making a separate point. Sorry if that was unclear. a-hard-days-night-paul-10
