Here's another possibility.
I have a soundtrack album of the 1967 Disney film The Jungle Book. It consists of the songs and dialogue extracts with linking narration by the Bagheera character (albeit spoken by a different actor) to tell the story in the time limit of an LP record. It also includes a full-colour illustrated book to follow along with.
The same approach could have been taken with YS. Old Fred would seem a natural for the narrator, and George Martin's score could feature prominently as well.
