He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I’m gonna be honest, despite my relatively low ratings of the songs, I went back and listen to the album to do this, and I remember it being much worse than what I heard.
14) Not A Second Time – just one of those Beatles songs that feel like some of the single most uninspired entries throughout their catalogue. throw it in the garbage, garbage melodies, garbage execution. 1/10
13) Roll Over Beethoven – with all respect to the late genius, this was never a favourite of mine when it came to Chuck Berry songs, and the Beatles butchered it even further. it sounds flat, and for its short length, it feels long and derivative as hell. worst cover by them. 2/10
12) Devil In Her Heart – which one was that again? 2/10
11) Little Child – boring and childish, even if the right amount of energy is there. still not a fun experience. 3/10
10) Don’t Bother Me – when I listen to All Things Must Pass , one of my favourite albums of all time, it makes me think that of course Paul isn’t dead, it was George who died and was replaced, because he used to write such lame songs lol. 4/10
9) You Really Got A Hold On Me – it’s fine, I suppose, but it wouldn’t make the cut under my management. 4/10
8) Please Mr. Postman – it’s great, but that’s just because Please Mr. Postman is already a timeless classic, and the Beatles aren’t playing the song way better than the original as it was the case on Twist And Shout , for comparison. I’ll subtract points because there is no Beatles arrangement to the track, is just the Marvelette’s song, but with guys singing it. 5/10
7) Hold Me Tight – decent I guess. like, I wouldn’t skip it. still, not even close to their best material. 5/10
6) I Wanna Be Your Man – the lyrics are stupid and it’s ok if you don’t like the song because of it. but I personally always thought the instrumentation and pace of this song is one of the best recorded tracks on the early Beatles era. I just think the energy is there, and the simplicity adds to it in a weird sense. 6/10
5) All My Loving – I don’t think it’s overrated, I just think it’s not for me. I can understand why it’s a classic, I respect it, and when I went to see Paul McCartney I singed my lungs out to it. but I don’t listen to it on a regular basis. 6/10
4) Till There Was You – I know it’s a cover, but I think it’s well executed, and kind of an odd choice to chose to make a cover on by Paul. a song from The Music Man. pretty beautiful. 6/10
3) It Won’t Be Long – on the surface, it feels like a cash-in attempt on the success of She Loves You , a much better song. but taking a closer look, actually, apart from the chorus, which is terrible, the verses has some impressively decent melody progressions. I can say I like it. 6/10
2) Money (That’s What I Want) – a great John vocal performance, and an interesting song to make a cover about, considering the topic. the piano motiv is great, and the vocal ad libs are great. 7/10
1) All I’ve Got To Do – actually beautiful. with great melodies, even if the vocal performance is a little rough. a great song, that sells the tone of the album on its best shape. a very grown up sort of writing considering the age and experience of the Beatles at that time, which was little. 8/10

By the way, I put Hold Me Tight on my Top 10 Beatles Songs list as a joke, since the song isn’t very good. The backing track is nice, but the vocals and lyrics are lacking.

Time for the ranks hype
All My Loving – Such a good song, so cute
Till There Was You – When I first watched the Music Man, hearing this song pop up shocked me. I didn’t realize it was from there. Does
Roll Over Beethoven – Lots of Energy, gotta dance now.
Mr. Post Man – Backing vocals are pretty good in this one.
Don’t Bother Me – This song is such a mood
I Wanna Be Your Man – Ringo good job
Hold Me Tight – idk mmm, this song got energy it is a bop.
Won’t Be Long – Got Hype, Got Energy
Not A Second Time – Pretty much Devil In Her Heart but slightly better
Devil In Her Heart – Rip my heart, why would you take your chances vs someone who RIPS YOUR HEART OUT!!
Bad Boy – Nice vocals
All I Gotta Do – Slower and oh man Beatles stereo the hard panning. Good for people editing their music
Money (That’s what I want) – Oh man if the Beatles did a cover of Diamonds are a girl’s best friend instead of this would be funny.
Really got a hold on me – So slowwwwwwwwwwww
Little Child – I don’t like old adults hooking up with a ‘Little Child ’. Unlike their other more uncomfortable songs, it doesn’t slap hard enough to ignore the lyrics. If I could ignore lyrics, it would be higher than All I Gotta Do

It’s very weird for grown adults to be singing like that about a little kid. I don’t understand how they could write it and think the lyrics were okay to actually put on an album. Pretty creepy, honestly.

It’s the language used at the time and there are numerous other examples, the immediate one that comes to mind is ‘Young Girl’ by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap which was released 5 years after ‘Little Child ‘. ABBA were singing ‘Does Your Mother Know‘ in the 70’s.

it’s kinda funny doing this one seeing as it’s my least favourite Beatles album, but here goes!
- It Won’t Be Long (I love the energy on this one)
- You Really Got A Hold On Me
- All I’ve Got To Do
- All My Loving (I really like John’s playing on this song)
- Don’t Bother Me (same George, same)
- Please Mister Postman
- Little Child
- I Wanna Be Your Man
- Till There Was You
- Hold Me Tight
- Money (That’s What I Want)
- Roll Over Beethoven
- Devil In Her Heart
- Not A Second Time
going through this album again made me appreciate it a bit more this time around, but I still mostly just like the first four songs and a couple of the covers

With the football into extra time might as well do one of these.
- All I’ve Got To Do – A pure innocence flows thru this. Folk highlight ‘This Boy ‘ and ‘If I Fell ‘ when trying to prove John had a tender side to him, this is up there. The confidence in this is incredible and Ringo’s drumming, love the hi-hat use.
- Not A Second Time – Always been a favourite, could be top but probably not. John trying desperately to convince himself he won’t go back but we all know he will, and we have all been there.
- It Won’t Be Long – I was blown away when I first heard this as a kid and still am – the force from the first millisecond to the very end. A brilliant opener to an album as you don’t have time to be hooked, you simply are.
- You Really Got A Hold On Me – I loved this as a kid, John sounds like he hasn’t a clue what he’s meant to do in life yet you believe every damn word he is signing and all the emotions he was going thru. Any doubt of the Beatles being able to take covers and own them forever after the first album must have been thrown down the deepest chasm after hearing this kind of number. A second album is meant to be tricky, this is an example of that not being an issue – clear progress in every way possible.
- Please Mister Postman – A cracking cover which turns a cutesy request into a raucous demand which makes you fear for the postman. So much fun and leaves you delighted there was a breather at the end, if you are listening to the vinyl.
- Till There Was You – Listen to the Decca run-thru and you’d be struggling to believe it’s the same band, the difference in 18 or so months is unbelievable. The drummer sounds like he knows what he’s doing, the singer is singing properly not crappy pretend crooning (I hate how Paul sings on most of the Decca tracks) and George’s solo is outstanding. When ‘LATBBC’ came out in ’94 there was a review/run-thru in the ‘Beatles Monthly’ which said that it was finally irreversible proof to all the doubters that George did the album solo on ‘TTWY’ and I get why. It is very easy to see why the Beatles failed at Decca, and then be mightily relieved that they did.
- All My Loving – Can see why this got so much press as it’s such a mature track from a 20/21 year old but I always find something missing. As mentioned by so many, including John himself, Johns guitar work is fantastic.
- Don’t Bother Me – George’s debut and it’s decent enough for a starter. Solid enough but I think I prefer the unfettered basic track that exists on bootleg. Not sure there is much to add.
- Roll Over Beethoven – A decent cover which is easily superseded by the live BBC recordings. Fun tho.
- Devil In Her Heart – A decent cover which is easily superseded by the live BBC recordings. Fun tho.
- I Wanna Be Your Man – A fun original which is easily superseded by the live BBC recordings. Fun tho.
- Little Child – It’s a fun rocker which was and will always be filler. It comes, it goes, it serves a purpose and never overstays it’s time – John was brilliant at these.
- Money (That’s What I Want) – The opening is the best part of the song, otherwise it’s a mundane Beatles cover that I fail to see what others do. There is a marked improvement from the dreadfully weak Decca attempt which is something. Never been bothered by the BBC performances either. [One item to note tho is this was featured in an episode of ‘Only Fools and Horses’ (‘Mother Nature’s Son ‘) and is probably the highlight and one reason for watching it (so no point buying the DVD as it’s apparently been replaced).]
- Hold Me Tight – Quite possibly the Beatles song I detest the most and one I will most always skip if not playing the album in full. There is nothing about this track I like and maybe nothing I can find bearable to tolerate it’s run time; as said before, John and George sound bored senseless, the rhythm track is all over the place and all whilst Paul tries way too hard on a track that should have been ditched for a second time (god knows how bad the ‘PPM ‘ version was if this was deemed better). And it annoys me even more and makes me detest the song even more that there is another Paul song with the exact same title which is in every way complete s**t.
Writing this out and the biggest note I come away with is the confidence in the Beatles playing and singing. And just how bad the Decca audition was.

I thought I had done a ranking of this album, but it appears not, so here goes! Funnily, this is an album that I’d struggle to list what is on it and in what order the songs appear in … the reason being, when I was a teenager in the 70s getting into The Beatles, I had to rely on the local record shops for which albums to buy. The one I went to locally never stocked this one, but strangely did stock the American ‘Meet The Beatles’ and ‘Beatles 2nd Album’, so I bought those instead, so got to know all the songs on ‘With The Beatles ‘ that way!
14. Hold Me Tight … one of my least favourite, if not actual least favourite Beatles songs
13. Little Child … ditto, but marginally better
12. Roll Over Beethoven … its ok but not a song I’d put on specifically to listen to
11. You Really Got A Hold On Me … just never been a big fan of this one, but it is ok
10. I Wanna Be Your Man … quite good and quite catchy
9. Not A Second Time … catchy song
8. Money … quite heavy for its time? Remember this came out before The Kinks, Stones and Who started recording? Good singing, lead and backing vocals
7. ‘Til There Was You … this is quite good and filled the Paul ballad spot on the album until he was able to write better ones himself!
6. It Won’t Be Long .. good energetic start to the album
5. Don’t Bother Me … George’s debut as a songwriter and a decent attempt!
4. Devil In Her Heart … just love this song and can play it over and over! Love George’s voice on this one!
3. All I’ve Got To Do … great vocals and song
2. Please Mr. Postman … one of their best covers. I love John’s voice and how they attack the girl group songs generally in the early days.
1. All My Loving … simply a classic and one of Paul’s best songs

I’ll start by admitting this is my least favourite of their albums and rarely revisit it. The first four tracks in my ranking I think are excellent, but everything else here sounds mostly unexciting and filler-y to me.
Till There Was You (I’d never properly given this one a proper listen until now, beautiful stuff!)
Devil In Her Heart (used to be my favourite but TTWY bowled me over this time. Still a great early George lead!)
I Wanna Be Your Man (Stones version is much better IMO but still decent)
Money (That’s What I Want)

What an album, and as has been said before, it’s underrated. Some very forceful and heartfelt songs on here. It Won’t Be Long, All I’ve Got To Do, All My Loving , Please Mr Postman, You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me and Money (That’s What I Want) to name a few. This album has been my focus in recent weeks.
