The image as found on Paul Whitehead's website:
where it is described as "Unused album art for the White Album , 1968."
Whitehead has said of the design, done when the album was still called A Doll's House:
I was working as the Art Director for Time Out In London [sic], and I had friends at Apple records and one, Wayne Bardell, told me that Apple was looking for ideas for the cover and possibly for material to go inside the cover. I submitted my design but they passed on it.
It's known that Whitehead's wasn't the only early cover, but his is the only one that has surfaced.
For a long time it was said the John Byrne painting used on the cover of The Beatles Ballads was originally created for the cover of A Doll's House, but Byrne has recently dismissed the suggestion.
I created The Beatles artwork for [Alan Aldridge's] The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics and NOT for the White Album . I was never contacted by Paul McCartney nor anyone to do with The Beatles with regard to the White Album .
More on the story of the album cover here.

The Byrne statement made me double-take when I saw it, @meanmistermustard. I think it was EMI who first suggested it was an unused WA cover in the press release for Ballads!!!
I'm pretty sure whether it was or wasn't has been debated here before, or in comments somewhere on the main site, with me arguing it was, and providing lots of links to prove it!!!
But the man says not...

I'm glad that they didn't use the album cover designed by Whitehead above, because it's too psychedelic for my taste, in contrast with the "White Album " which is a sort of back-to-basics, grassroots project.

They were going to call the album Everest at one point, were they not? Although this looks more like Mount Rushmore.
That was for Abbey Road . https://www.beatlesbible.com/f.....ng-titles/
Everest was considered as a title for Abbey Road, and The Beatles considered flying to the foothills of the Himalayas for a photo shoot,

Oh, that's right! This still looks like Mount Rushmore though, maybe that got started thinking about mountains.

Everest came from the brand of cigarettes Geoff Emerick smoked at the time.
If they considered flying to the Himalayas for a photo shoot, this should have been the cover:
The Beatles in the Himalayas buying cigarettes out of a vending machine at the foot of Everest - or the vicinity at least.
Not sure I'd want to smoke up there though with the air so thin.

Interesting to think about if this cover was actually chosen, and was always THE cover. I think we’d possibly feel different about it, because history would’ve created familiarity with it, etc. “The cover was just going to be white?, how boring and uncreative!”

Having thought about this more, and looking at Whitehead's quote about it I posted above:
...Apple was looking for ideas for the cover and possibly for material to go inside the cover.
I'm wondering whether this was intended for the cover or the inside of the gatefold.
