I love long songs and compositions. I’m a bug Jam band guy, so I like extended jams and solos as well as complex songwriting that can keep your attention for a long time.

Hmm. WMGGW never bores me, but I’ll keep it in mind. I can’t get enough of each time it switches from the lighthearted chorus back into the plodding verse, it just sounds so badass plus as a guitarist I consider the first solo to be one of the best ever (behind Comfortably Numb, Stairway To Heaven and Hotel California).
I’m with you @sir walter raleigh . I love long songs (as long as they’re good enough to keep me interested).

he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

This one may surprise some of you but I think the US version of Rubber Soul is their most overrated album. They took such a great album and cut out 4 of it’s best tracks, including Nowhere Man , one of their best songs of all time, and replaced them with 2 inferior songs from the Help ! album, yet somehow many people consider it the best thing Capitol has ever done. Sure US Revolver did the same thing and didn’t even bother to replace the 3 missing tracks but that version gets hate while this album gets praise, with a few even labeling it as superior to the UK album (probably because they cut out What Goes On , a song that is disliked by many fans). Overall, the album isn’t bad but when compared to it’s UK version, it really sucks and is IMO very overrated.
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

I like the US. Rubber Soul . Since I can listen to the UK version as well, sometimes I’ll listen to the US order if I’m in a folkier mood. I think the additions from help are strong song choices, and while I agree that Nowhere Man is better (and an all time great song) it’s omission does not bother me so much as it doesn’t fit the mood as well as others.
The US version has great flow and feel. It is what initially attracted Brain Wilson to it so much.

I find Revolver to be a little bit overrated. It used to be my favorite but it has since dropped in the ranks. I Still Love it though

Got to be the White Album for me too many songs on it that are not that good, All though it does have some great songs on it but because there is that many songs on it that are not that good i think it is overrated.

Agree. I’m a big fan of the album, but I’ve always favoured Rubber Soul .

Hm, I’d probably have to say Abbey Road because it’s like, the first thing people think of when they think “Beatles”. It’s a great album, but not as good as Rubber Soul , Revolver , or Sgt Peppers, which all have more varying type of songs, experimental stuff, and the like.
Bonus points for my friend calling it “Abbey Street”.

^Yeah, I can see where you’re coming from with that. I wouldn’t call it overrated exactly (it is one of the greater things since sliced bread), but it’s certainly… I dunno… overknown. Kind of like how Pink Floyd is synonymous with The Dark Side of the Moon — DSOTM is an absolutely bloody incredible piece of work, but it can be a bit annoying (especially to hardcore fans) how it overshadows everything else they did.

My thoughts exactly. Abbey Road is freaking amazing, but if I wanted to define the Beatles, it’s a lot more than “Oh, yeah, that crossroad thing”
And I hate that doubt when I see someone wearing a Dark Side ‘O the Moon shirt. “Should I walk up and start talking about Pink Floyd, or did they just like the shirt?”.

@TheWalrusWasBrian well, if you’re ever in this part of town and see a certain tallish moptoppy gal wearing a DSOTM shirt, by all means go up to her and start talking about Pink Floyd. It might just be me.

Well, well, well. My oh my, what a can of worms we’ve opened here, eh? LOL! Okay, here goes…
I’ve always thought that Abbey Road , the White Album , and Sgt. Pepper are all overrated. I was around when all these albums came out. And they all impressed me at the time. But I still feel the same.
Sgt. Pepper was more important as a recording/cultural epic, not so much for the actual music. In terms of composition, ‘She’s Leaving Home ‘ is, by far, the best song.
Abbey Road is very weak in my opinion. I’d rather listen to Please Please Me . That album’s energy and passion is among their best.
Lastly, Rubber Soul and Revolver will always be my favorites.

Ok, so I forgot SS when counting them up yesterday. 10, not 9!
Ob-La-Di has to be the worst song they ever did! I made a mini version of the White Album with 10 songs. Only 2 of yours are on mine. Just goes to show…

Just making my way through this thread for the first time, and I’m enjoying the responses 🙂 It seems most people have chosen albums that are usually the highest rated – Revolver , Sgt. Pepper , White Album and Abbey Road – so it seems almost like we are pigeon-holed into picking one of them.
Luckily, my answer is also Sgt. Pepper .
I discovered the Beatles through the Red and Blue greatest hits albums and as a poor college student, I had to find each album (used) one by one when I had the money to buy them. In the mid-90’s, it was actually a challenge to find used Beatles CDs because no one ever sold theirs to music stores (the same was true for Pink Floyd and some other famous bands). As I experienced each one for the first time, I felt the amazement and giddy excitement that I know each of you felt upon each first listen. Every album has a magic of its own – you and I both know this! Sgt. Pepper was one of the last albums I found/heard.
However, I admit when I finally found a copy of Sgt. Pepper – supposedly the “best” Beatles album with it’s legendary status – I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed overall. Maybe it had been built up too much, and I figured I must be alone in feeling that way about it. In hindsight, now I realize (like others said previously) that they just weren’t working with their best songs.
Seeing as how Sgt. Pepper is often named as the #1 album of ALL TIME, I think it’s only too obvious that it is a bit overrated. If SFF and Penny Lane were on there, THEN it would unquestionably be worthy of that title – though it would then probably overshadow everything else like Dark Side of the Moon does with PF’s catalog.
