My head hurts just reading about all the mixes and what’s on the albums and what’s not.  I don’t know how you guys can keep up with all that; it’s quite admirable.

 

Yeah, I start reading this stuff and I say to myself, “I guess I’m not really as much of a Beatlemaniac as I’d like to think I am”….:-)

You should see what’s been occurring on the Steve Hoffman Forum – one ran for 12 threads, thousands of posts, very informative and addictive reading. 

I think that one has been closed as it was going around in circles, a new one opened by the mods as to whether you simply like the box or not –

I read lots of the discussion when I was deciding whether to cancel my preorder or not.  I’m glad I didn’t.  The poll says 40.1% dislike/hate it, which means a majority are fine with it.

I can forgive Apple for not including the less common mixes on the box set, and opting instead to include the mixes that most people are familiar with…for most of the people who bought the original Capitol album of Y&T, the US Albums box contains the mono mix they are familiar with (which is the authentic mix, the stereo being fake).

I can also see the point of view of the collector who wants all the mixes remastered.

The duophonic was fake, but in what way was the stereo that used on multiple editions fake?

Oooo… I started something here without even hearing the box set! 12,000+ posts eh! And I’ve only picked up on two tracks so far!

40% dislike is high for a set like this!

The stereo was used on reel-to-reel, 4-track, 8-track and cassette until 1969 when it was used on a “Longine” edition.  That doesn’t exactly make it common.  That means that for at least three years the majority of people who bought it only had the mono mix and the fake stereo.

The early vinyl “stereo” versions of Y&T that used duophonic mixes were fake, but the “stereo” versions that used the stereo mixes that were made for the album, were in no way fake. Call the duophonic fake, but not the stereo!

When I read you saying “the stereo being fake”, it read to me that you were saying GMs stereo mixes were fake, which they obviously are not.

That’s not what I’m saying.  When I say “fake stereo,” I mean “duophonic,” which is fake stereo.  What I’m saying is that yes, true stereo did exist, but not on vinyl versions until the one that was released in 1969.  And even then, it looks like most later versions (from the “70’s and beyond” mentioned above) included the UK mix, not the “American” one.  So it’s not a sin that they made the choice they did.

I keep imagining this conversation taking place in someone’s basement with all the guys sitting around a table throwing out ideas and fiddling around with stereo knobs.

I’m just sitting over here on a high stool with my elbow on my knee and my chin on my hand watching curiously back and forth. Does anyone need their drink topped off? I’ll put out some more pizza rolls and chips & dip.

I’m okay with that scenario as long as Mom doesn’t come down and tell us to move out or get jobs.
