Offline A Day In The Life . Truly a masterpiece, and undoubtedly the best song on SPLHCB . Dreamy sequence with real yet surreal lyrics. the crescendo. and again! A piece WAYYYYYYY before its time.

Offline Hmm…. I do love the title track because it just has the feeling of pulling the audience in. I like feeling like a part of it all. Also, the harmonies are great but when are they ever NOT great?
But A Day In The Life takes the cake, you can’t argue with that. I love the verse about the holes, I think that’s my favourite part.

Honestly, as much as I’ve always wanted to claim that Sgt. Pepper is the great masterpiece that so many others claim it is, I just can’t. For me, the most impeccable production values in the world can’t cover up the core fact that this isn’t the best batch of songs the guys ever came up with. Paul wrote (or, at least, was the primary writer of) 8 of the album’s 13 tracks (along with contributing the middle section to John’s “A Day In The Life “)… but, despite this, I feel it’s the only Beatles album (Yellow Submarine notwithstanding) to which he did not contribute at least one bona fide home run of a song that also ranks among his all-time greatest compositions.

On Sgt. Pepper , the title track and its reprise (and maybe “When I’m Sixty-Four “) were his best contributions, being doubles at the most. The rest are merely singles, IMO. The group really shot themselves in the foot by leaving off both “Penny Lane ” and “Strawberry Fields Forever ” — arguably the 2 best songs written for these sessions. I’ve constructed my own personal cut of the album with this alternate track listing:

Offline While “A Day In The Life ” is an obvious treasure, I’d to go with either “LSD” (for its simplicity and soaring glory), or Harrison’s spiritually enlightening “Within You Without You “, which I think is underrated because it was so unconventional for The Beatles. But listen to just all the details in the entire composition. An Eastern symphony, in a sense.

Offline It kills me to choose. Some of my favorite songs are on this album! I guess I have to go with A Day In The Life . On top of loving the song itself, I started singing along with it the first time I heard it. I knew exactly when the singing started and ended. On top of that, I knew the lyrics. Yeah, I was a little freaked out for a bit.
"I'd tell her I love her, but she'd only reject me in the end and I'd be frustrated. That's why I play guitar; it's my active compensatory factor" -Ringo said something like this once, I changed it up a bit.

Offline I would have to choose ‘Within You Without You ‘.
It’s strange, I used to hate this song, but now it is one of my favourites.
The lyrics are deep and the Sitar just takes you to another world with it’s beautiful sound. For Harrison’s only real contribution to the album, it still has to be the strongest song on the album for me.

Offline I’d have to give the nod to A Day In The Life .
Instead of ranking the rest of the songs, which are essentially tied for 2nd, I’ll list the two I can pick out for least favorites (I am in no way saying I dislike the songs!).
2nd, Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!
And last, Lucy (despite the fact that one of my other fave artists, Elton, said it was the greatest R&R song ever written – on the There sides of Here and There where John made an appearance). Maybe I’ve heard it too many times (I hate it when a song gets tarnished in my ears by overplaying). It’s still a tremendous song – being last among 13 songs that are all probably in my top 100…no 200 songs of all time isn’t such a bad thing (I realized that placing them all in my top 100 would end up requiring at least 30 Beatles songs in the top 100 – and while I do love them, there are a lot of truly great songs by other artists out there).
And what amazes me is that in my mind and that of quite a few others here, the masterpiece that is Sgt. Pepper ‘s isn’t even their best album!

Offline 1. A Day In The Life – I consider this, along with Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane , to be the most perfect songs recorded by the group. Masterful in construction, yet not taking itself too seriously, this piece is a genuine masterpiece.
2. Within You Without You – This song is polarizing. The only other person who I speak to about the Beatles on a regular basis is my father, and he hates this song. I think it’s brilliant, a definite mood setter. The lyrics explore disillusion with ego, a popular theme with George, and one repeated years later on I Me Mine . The orchestral backing to this song adds another layer of complexity and beauty which rivals that of Something .
3. She’s Leaving Home – Another one people seem to love or hate. This one is beautiful, and I can’t say I’ve heard a prettier vocal take from John on a Beatles tune. A sad story set to melancholy music, yet is kept from being too much of a drag by the stunning vocals by Paul and John.
4. Good Morning Good Morning – I love this song mostly because it is so busy. Lots of noise and confusing drumming. For me, this makes it a neat song, for the Beatles weren’t always known for making the most confusing pieces musically. The animal sound effects at the end are great, but the wonderfully spastic guitar solo seals the deal for me. If you’re a guitar player, you know how difficult it can be to sound that random on the instrument.
5. Lovely Rita – A Paul tune that doesn’t say much in the way of lyrics, but still manages to entice musically. Indeed, the intro and outro of this song are what truly does it for me, the almost angelic voices singing “Lovely Rita , Meter Maid” amidst Paul’s bouncing bass lines. A nice tune.
6. Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band – Two reasons: It’s a great rocker, and it’s the concept. Though John, George and Ringo seem to downplay the whole concept idea as presented by Paul, this song shows a strong and fun idea. A few downsides: early days of distortion yet, and the guitar sounds like an electric cat. Not a good thing, but the masterful playing seems to bring it up.
7. With A Little Help From My Friends – I love Ringo, and this is a sweet song. Not too much to comment on, but the guitar playing by George is spot on here.
8. Getting Better – An optimistic outlook on life. The bit about beating his woman is slightly strange and alarming, but Paul’s vocals are great, as are the backing vocals.
9. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds – A nice tune from John. This was one of my favorite songs as a boy, but as I’ve grown, I don’t like it as much. Still lovely. I don’t buy into the whole LSD story; if John wanted to write a song about acid, he would have written one. He didn’t have a problem mentioning other drugs. (Read: Happiness Is A Warm Gun )
10. When I’m 64 – I really love this song, but it’s not quite the same caliber as the others. Indeed, in the One Hand Clapping film, Paul states that he wrote several songs thinking he’d end up as a cabaret act, and this is one of them. Not a bad song. I’d like to hear an album by Paul constituting all of his cabaret songs, and this one would fit right in next to Martha My Dear , Honey Pie , Suicide, and others.
11. Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite – When I listen to Sgt. Pepper on CD in my car, this is the song I skip the most. The instrumentation is a bit annoying after a while, and the lyrics are completely throwaway, even more so than usual from John (He took all of the words from a poster. Literally all of them.) When it was mixed with I Want You (She’s So Heavy) and Helter Skelter , I enjoyed it. It made for a sort of demented carnival sound which lends itself nicely to Paul’s screaming vocals. Here, it’s just a place holder, though its atmosphere does lend more to the concept than other tunes.
12. Sgt. Pepper Reprise – I actually really like this song, but seeing as it was more of an afterthought, I can’t put it higher. Honestly, it should probably be catalogued with Sgt. Pepper proper, but I digress.
13. Fixing A Hole – Paul has a reputation for being cutesy sometimes. Very usually I can stand it. Silly Love Songs aside, this song is one where he’s just a bit too cute. Again, not a bad tune, but I don’t always listen to it.
There you have it. Not my favorite Beatles album by far, but still a phenomenally good one. It inspired Brian Wilson to write SMiLE, and if you have heard the reconstructed version released in 2011, you know it’s a masterpiece on par with anything the Beatles did. This album is frequently listed as being the best rock album of all time, and though it may not have the best songs to attest to that fact, the influence this record has justifies its place.

In Good Morning, Good Morning, I really like the lines “everyone you see is half asleep, and you’re on your own, you’re in the street” – John’s inflection is spot on as usual. Or maybe I just like the concept of gritty city streets – because I also like Stevie Wonder’s delivery of the line “Living just enough, just enough for the ci-tee” (in Living for the City).
In Getting Better , the part about being mean to his woman was autobiographical (or maybe you know that) and an early example of John’s sometimes shocking way of wearing his heart on his sleeve. See this Playboy interview and many other cites…. That doesn’t make it less disturbing but I do give kudos to John for putting it out there for all to hear. That interview is really interesting if you haven’t read it btw, John tells the meaning/inspriation behind several songs. I like his reply when they ask about Give Peace A Chance :
“All we were saying was Give Peace A Chance “
Have to agree with Pepper’s influence making it deserving of it’s (often) top spot on the best albums list, despite it not being their best.
