I mean, considering that Rolling Stone had it rated as the greatest album of all time shows that it’s far from underrated.  Personally, I think it deserves that spot.  Most creative, thought out songs with the most flavor that the Beatles ever made.  Just in my opinion though.

I’ve been playing Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite ! a lot lately, there’s some similarity to another John song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds . Both with a loose, vampy feel from the bass, almost monotonic vocals, and both structurally odd for Beatles songs: one doesn’t have a chorus, the other doesn’t have a middle section. The Beatles are the only band where I think of the inner correspondences of album songs a-hard-days-night-ringo-14

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

Sgt. Pepper will be 50 next year. I wish one or more of our Australian forumpudlians could go to this event.

Sound engineer Richard Lush to take Q & A on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

A interesting snippet from the article

“They’d [The Beatles] start playing at 3pm and would finish a session usually around 2am. You had George Martin in the control room as the old man, at 38, surrounded by a group of 18 to 21 year olds and the band who were only in their 20s.

“Often, he’d just fall asleep.”

Moving on…

The Masters of Sgt Pepper event is on February 24 and 25 at Planetshakers, City Rd, Southbank.

It is suitable for all ages with tickets available from showbiztickets.com.au/product/masters-of-sgt-pepper

Yay, @The Hole Got Fixed, @Joe and the forumpudlians will have at least one ambassador at the event. If @ewe2 and/or @trcanberra and @HongKongLady can make it to the event….

Maybe you could fashion a question like: “I was reading on the Beatles Bible forum that ________.” paul-mccartney-thumb_gif

I am always looking for opportunities to spread the word.

I know this is weird to say, but when I was younger, I always thought that John played rhythm guitar on this song. It wasn’t until much later that I learned that he only sang backing vocals.

Maybe you should try posting more.

I never really listened to CD’s, as they don’t give as good of a presentation as vinyl and by the time vinyl died out there was copiers so you can have one blank cassette/CD and just reburn it when you’re done with what’s on it. I will say though, the first CD I remember getting was Alice In Chains Dirt, as before then I was using vinyl.

Maybe you should try posting more.

Technically the Beatles 1 was the first Beatles album I owned, followed by the Love soundtrack.  But technically my parents owned those, and I just used them.  Sgt. Pepper was the first non Compilation I owned, and the first one that was MINE.

Paul McCartney Looks Back on Negative ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ Reviews

It’s almost universally regarded as a classic today, but in many ways, the Beatles‘ Sgt. Pepper ’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was an album decidedly ahead of its time — and not everyone who heard it initially appreciated the groundbreaking achievements.

Mojo sat down with Paul McCartney for its issue celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper ’s release, with the former Beatle taking a bemused look back at some of the mild panic that greeted the group behind the scenes when they turned in the tapes — and some of the less-than-favorable reviews, including the infamous pan published by The New York Times.

As McCartney recalls, there was no shortage of people who thought the band had taken a potentially ruinous detour. “We were always being told, ‘You’re gonna lose all your fans with this one,’” said McCartney. “And we’d say, ‘Well, we’ll lose some but we’ll gain some. We’ve gotta advance.’”

McCartney went on to single out the Times review penned by critic Richard Goldstein, who argued, “The sound is a pastiche of dissonance and lushness. The mood is mellow, even nostalgic. But, like the cover, the over-all effect is busy, hip and cluttered. Like an over-attended child Sgt. Pepper is spoiled.”

The backlash that greeted Goldstein’s review prompted him to write a follow-up piece for the Village Voice in which he admitted his thoughts on the album had evolved somewhat. Still, he wasn’t among the record’s most ardent admirers; although he said it was “better than 80 percent of the music around today,” he added, “When the Beatles’ work as a whole is viewed in retrospect, it will be Rubber Soul and Revolver which stand as their major contributions.”

“We were used to that,” shrugged McCartney. “‘She Loves You ’ was ‘banal.’ But if we liked it and thought it was cool, we would go for it.”

McCartney went on to praise the new stereo mix put together for the expanded edition of the LP, agreeing with Mojo‘s assessment of the sound as “muscular” and adding, “It sounds more like us playing in the room and more like we intended it.”

I am so ready to hear this album.
