I actually do like A Day In The Life but that's the only John song I like from Sgt.Pepper.I honestly feel bad about it because of the way you worded it.I wasn't trying to be mean or anything about when I said “I really don't care for any John songs on Sgt.Pepper” and I wasn't trying to be bold.Another reason I feel bad is because I'm probably not even wanted here anymore,I ruined it all myself.I hope I wasn't being rude or anything in this comment,if I was please forgive me.I understand I usually make things way more then what they are,I just think it's funny because you made it seem like if I didn't like A Day In The Life then I wasn't a real Beatle fan

Offline Yeah, seriously, don't worry about not liking a few of the songs from Sgt. Pepper . I personally don't really care for Lucy, either, which I always thought was kind of strange because everyone else seems to love it so much. Good Morning Good Morning is growing on me, and Mr. Kite is meh…I like it but wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it.
A Day In The Life , on the other hand…now that's a different story. Masterpiece.
Just because you don't care for John's contributions to Sgt. Pepper doesn't mean you don't like any of his songs. It's certainly understandable for this album especially because it was Paul's pet project. You go back to albums like A Hard Day's Night, Help !, and Rubber Soul …that's where the meat and potatoes of John's songs are. Though he definitely has his bright spots on The White Album (Happiness, Julia , Dear Prudence …the damn album…).

I am shocked because I now know I'm going to LOVE this place! I have NEVER in my time being a Beatles fan ran across people that didn't think Sgt. Pepper was the Beatles 'GREATEST ALBUM EVER!' Now don't get me wrong I like it a lot but as others said the songs, overall, aren't that great compared to others. Sgt. Pepper was the 2nd Beatles album I bought and it took me a few years to get into it. I'm sure you had to be there to really get the impact of that album. The vibe of it is incredible though which makes up for the not up to par (as for as the Beatles are concerned) songwriting.
I LOVE the first 2 songs however.
Never been a big fan of Lucy. Fixing A Hole , Getting Better , She's Leaving Home, Mr. Kite I like but I never really listen to those songs unless I'm listening to the entire album.
I HATED Within You Without You for yearrssss. I don't know why but now it's one of my favorites. Definatly a highlight of that album for me. 64 is a cool song aswell. It kind of sticks out on the album though but a song I wouldn't mind singing to if it came up on shuffle.
Lovely Rita /Good Morning…just like earlier songs….not songs I would go to listen to but I do like them. I was never to keen on the Sgt. Pepper reprise either (unless of course I'm listening to the entire record)
Now 'A Day In The Life ' is fantastic. It seems that's one thing a lot of us agree on. A great close to that album.
So as a whole Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band is a good ALBUM. The overall mood is really chill but the individual songs aren't really that great.
Try to realize it's all within yourself, no one else can make you change....

It's not about individual songs, it's about IMPACT – a band re-inventing itself, lyrics printed on the album, a mega-effort on the cover art, paper cut-outs provided with the album, the world of rock'n'roll landing on the (then) staid TIME magazine cover, the whole western world talking about one album, etc….

What makes Sgt Pepper so great if song for song it isn’t necessarily the greatest?
In addition to the little factoids previously listed, consider that between the birth of rock’n’roll to 1967 no rock album ever won “Best Album” at the Grammys – until Sgt Pepper .
This is because the Grammys voters have always been grannies. Well, maybe not that old, but mostly over 30, (i.e. “old”).
In the 50s and 60s, the over-30 crowd never considered rock to be worthy of any musical award – unless it kinda sounded like their type of song.
Sgt Pepper was the first album to break that barrier, the first rock album to be taken seriously by the entire world of music.

Offline Well guys, Sgt. Pepper ‘s album, and it’s actually my favourite one, ranked 1 on the Rolling Stone’s list of top 500 greatest albums of all time. 1 of that 500 albums. Even Elvies didn’t make it to top 1.

The thing with the Beatles is that so many other artists have achieved certain things that the Beatles didnt or sold more copies of an album, for instance One Direction are the first UK band to debut at #1 in the US which is a great success story (im not going to make negative comments). But with an album like Pepper, and so much other stuff The Beatles did, is what keeps them ahead of everyone else. Artists will continue to outperform The Beatles in certain separate areas, but no band, or artist, will ever come close to matching the influence and standards set down in their music and the areas that they broke down that were previously heavily bolted shut.
As said previously there is so much social achievement and movement wrapped up in Pepper, plus it is a fabulous album. The whole package of Pepper is enormous and so when it comes to analysis thats when it begins to truly flex its muscles. There arent many albums that have that reaction to being under a microscope.
Its kind of like a meditating lion, it looks peaceful and is cute and people would go “ahhh, how sweet” and forget its ferociousness, but poke it with a stick a couple of times and it will come to life and gobble you up. (Erm… yeah)

Offline I LOVE Pepper. It’s sound is so comforting, and the idea behind it is amazing. I love how Paul’s cute songs like When I’m 64 and Lovely Rita are in it with songs like A Day In The Life , and Within You Without You . George is such a smart soul 
And the title track always gets me. It’s so… full.

Offline Personally, I think Sgt. Pepper is underrated because more people know it for its iconic cover than music. Most everyone that thinks of the tracks on Sgt. Pepper as the first three and last one. Where did Getting Better , Fixing a Hole, She’s Leaving Home , Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!, Within You Without You , When I’m Sixty-Four , Lovely Rita , Good Morning Good Morning , and Sgt. Pepper Reprise go? People basically ignore the middle section of the album. The cover on the other hand, is the most recognizable album cover there is, if I’m not mistaken. I do agree that the quality of the songs are lower than that of Revolver and the White Album , but not Abbey Road , in my opinion.
About the cover thing, I think Abbey Road is the most iconic. How many people have done a parody of the cover? The Simpsons, cats walking across the street, Volkswagon Beetles, just as a few examples.

I love Sgt Pepper but I’d still argue it is only my fifth or sixth favourite Beatles album. I appreciate its immense importance and certainly appreciate its presence as a landmark in making the album itself an art form, but I can’t ignore that I prefer most of the songs on other albums. I think a lot of people think it’s automatically the best before they become versed in the Beatles, because they hear so much about it, the album cover is so recognizable, and it has gone down in history as a crowning achievement. I’d rank above it Revolver , Rubber Soul , A Hard Day’s Night , Abbey Road and the White Album , and maybe even put it on a par with Magical Mystery Tour .
