My favourite thing about When I’m Sixty-Four is that it comes after Within You Without You . Such a radical change in genres, from far-out philosophical Indian raga to cosy, twee English music hall- people who were listening for the first time in 1967 and thought the first side of the record was weird, would have surely been blown away by this double-punch on the second side!

Offline I can honestly see some listeners in ’67 scratching their heads and wondering what the heck was going on. Going from harps and a song about a girl running away from home to the fairground before heading into India and then a trip back to the music of yesteryear. Lovely Rita could be seen as safe ground yet the ending is incredibly random before heading to the world of animals barking, roaring and whatnot. Eventually it all ends with an unprecedented orchestral crescendo via a song with scorching guitars but not quite because some weird gibberish has appeared that just wont shut up unless its turned off.
No wonder some reviewers slated it.
The White Album is said to be so scattergun with its musical genre’s but Pepper is incredibly varied as well.

Offline Most underrated: For me it’s Getting Better , the guitar work is great and the tempo is light and sounds like a power flower great song! I don’t hear it much on the radio as much as Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds or the song below that I think is the most overrated song on Sgt. Peppers
Most Overrated: A Day In Life. Sure it’s a great song is one of my favorites infact its one of the first songs of The Beatles I listened too. It was something never done before and it was something never made before which is where it got it’s praise. I like the song but its too overrated.

Most overrated is definitely “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds “. It’s a good song, but I feel it gets more credit than it deserves. Same goes for “With A Little Help From My Friends “.
“A Day In The Life ” deserves to be as popular as it is because it’s an epic song, so not overrated in my opinion.
Underrated: Fixing A Hole , She’s Leaving Home , When I’m Sixty-Four , Lovely Rita .

Offline It’s the best song on the album after ADITL, so IMO it’s definitely not overrated.

Offline Ringo’s drumming on LITWD alone makes it one of the best songs on Pepper, throw in what everyone else is doing and its amazing. Even with everything isolated its a pure blast from start to finish. The Lowrey Organ

I’ve made no secret around here that I’m not the biggest fan of Paul’s contributions to the album, and this list should continue to reinforce that sentiment. As far as most overrated, it’s gotta be “She’s Leaving Home .” I still can’t get how this rather maudlin companion piece of sorts to “Eleanor Rigby ” gets as much love as it does. It’s a good enough song (The Beatles were incapable of writing lousy songs 
), but come on. The string & harp arrangement is almost sickeningly sweet, and the girl in the song has always struck me more as a typical stuck-up, self-absorbed teen than a victim of overly conservative parenting. 
I’ll also add “A Day In The Life ” as being a bit overrated in that it nearly always ends up in the Top 5 of best Beatles song lists, whereas it barely makes my top 5 for just this album. The most underrated song is definitely “Within You, Without You.” I know Indian music will always be an acquired taste to the vast majority of Westerners, but I have to laugh at those who claim this to be the all-time greatest rock album, yet they always skip Track #8 without fail.

I personally think When I’m Sixty Four is massively overrated I even learned it in school for singing assemblies maybe that contributed to my dislike towards the song. As for With A Little Help From My Friends I think it deserves it’s recognition it’s a damn good song same goes for A Day In The Life . Most underrated I agree Within You Without You for a long time I myself used to skip it then I properly listened to it and now it’s one of my most played it’s really unappreciated 
But if you want money for people with minds that hate... All I can tell you is brother you have to wait. Alright.

Yeah I’ve found that by listening to the isolated tracks, I’ve come to appreciate some songs a lot more. It makes me see what’s so good about them even though I don’t necessarily like some of them

Offline I just read a random line from someone on the internet; I have no idea if she’s speaking with any authority, but here’s her quote: “Did you ever notice that the opening melodic line of “When I’m Sixty Four” is identical to the opening line of Wagner’s “Ride Of The Valkyries?” Huh? Here’s “The Ride Of The Valkyries;” I guess this person means the opening trumpet line at about 27 seconds, after the dramatic swirling strings intro. It’s kind of a stretch, in my opinion. But it’s good to possess such trivial knowledge; you never know when you might find yourself standing around at a stuffy, high society cocktail party, and you feel the need to say something interesting.

Offline I believe that while Within You, Without You is very underrated, we all respect and enjoy the song, so it’s not completely disregarded. Being for The Benefit of Mr. Kite!, however, is barely even mentioned in what I’ve read of this topic, except IrateMarauder who surprisingly classified it as overrated. I don’t think many casual fans have heard it or of it, and that for all work that went into it, cutting up the tapes and just how amazing it sounded at the end of it all, it isn’t respected as much as some other great songs on this album. Right now I’m listening to just the left ear (as I tend to do) and its pretty much an instrumental, the part before the end is just put together so well and gives you the illusion you’re at some odd dream carnival. That one part always reminds me of a dial tone and I imagine picking up a phone hearing that, and it starting to dance and make its own ‘music’ when the tone starts to shift. That’s where my mind goes when I listen to that end part, and that’s the best I can explain it. Great song, definitely underrated.
For overrated I’d have to go with Lucy. Love it obviously, but that’s one of the Beatles songs everyone knows, it’s got great music and imagery, but was made so popular and therefore overrated due to it spelling LSD. Its not the best of the ones everyone knows either, but it’s held up there with them, so I’d say overrated.
And in any case, the whole album’s filled with great stuff pretty much at the same level so to say whether or not its overrated I think we’d have to go with popularity in relation to creativity…
