Hello everybody.  I recently purchased the mono box set, and I really like how Rubber Soul sounds in mono, especially since the 2009 stereo remaster sounded quite uneven to me.  The original ’65 stereo mix included in the set doesn’t sound too bad to me either, but what do all of you think?  Do you prefer mono or stereo when it comes to Rubber Soul , and which of the stereo mixes do you prefer?  Also, does anybody know why the 2009 stereo remasters of Help ! and Rubber Soul  use the 1987 remix instead of the original master tapes.  Thank you.

George Martin didn’t like the original ’65 mixes when it came to releasing the cd’s for ’87 so he did new ones which have become the standards ever since. There is an interview floating about from that time with George M speaking about it, i have no idea where.

I prefer the ’65 ones.

I also prefer the 1965 Stereo mix of Rubber Soul . Too much reverb added in the remix from ’87.

Regarding mono versus stereo, I love the mono mixes. They always seem to have a little more punch to them.

I prefer the mono mixes of every Beatles album that has them (everything up to and including the White Album ).

Was listening to some of the 1965 stereo mixes a couple of days ago and found them to be a mess. The first 4 songs have the vocals on one side, instruments on the other and just as your brain is getting used to it ‘Think For Yourself ‘ reverses it. Presumably it was down to the little amount of time George M had to get it ready for release. Not surprised he remixed it in 1987, shame he didn’t do a better job.

I disagree with myself of two years ago.

I’ve been having 2nd thoughts too, especially after hearing some of the songs on Beatles 1 were they finally centered the vocals in the stereo tracks! a-hard-days-night-ringo-13

Looks like you and I will be buying more re-re-re-re-reissues after all @meanmistermustard  paul-mccartney

P.S.  Love that Interview, that was a nice read and foresight with the mono/stereo reissues!

I prefer the mono version of Rubber Soul . It sounds fuller to me than the stereo versions.

The irony of canyon width wide stereo mix being added to the Mono Box is delicious. Listening to the actual 65 stereo mix is not. I don’t hate the 87 mixes but I understand why George made them. So ya, Mono all the way for me.

What is happening? And tell me how you've been.
