I love “Taxman ” – great job, George!
I’ve been listening to “Revolver ” quite a bit lately. I know that Paul does the countdown at the beginning of the song (and that awesome guitar solo! Yay, Paul!)…but right after Paul finishes counting…in the distance someone yells “Go!” Who is that? It sounds like John to me. My curious mind needs to know…

I think that’s John or George counting (probably John) — it doesn’t sound like Paul to me. The shout you mention sounds to me like someone is, amusingly, saying “Four!” to complete the second countdown which ends at “Three”.
The more vexing mystery to me is: who is coughing at a certain point there?

I thought it was “Ringo” as in a call to start the song, that’s what i’ve always heard, if i was pushed who to say i’d go for John but i’m not 100% and banking my Beatles collection on it, not even going to bet my Driving Rain cd.
For me its definitely George i hear do the count in. Who wants to definitely hear John so we go round in circles for the next 67 pages?

I’m relatively new to the Beatles Bible, and it was here that I learned about the informative book, “That Magic Feeling.” I just finished it, and it is due back at the library on Friday. According to the author, John Winn, he quotes Mark Lewisohn as saying that it is Paul McCartney doing the count-in for “Taxman .” Also, he points out that Paul’s count-in is tacked on from another take. I don’t know if I would bet my “Ringo’s Rotogravure” LP on that answer, but that’s what I read recently. There is no mention of who is responsible for the cough.

Ruh-roh. MMM is going to tangle with Lewisohn. I’m getting the popcorn ready then I’ll settle in. This should be a good show.
Wouldn’t it be cool if Lewisohn were a forum member?

Ok, seems there are two count-in’s, the tacked on one (that we all hear clearly with the coughing) is George, the other (what i thought was “Ringo”) by Paul (not John) is the real one for the song.
Or as Allan W. Pollack writes:
The track opens up with a phony spliced-in “count off”, the effect of which is made whacky by the tone of what sounds like George’s artificially slowed-down speaking voice, the sound of a guitar’s stray noodling in the background, seemingly random fast-backward tape noises, and the fact that this count off is not in the same tempo as the music which follows. Listen closely and you can hear Paul calling out the real count-off (especially by the time he reaches “four!”) .
So no fight between Lewison and myself () and let’s just gloss over the whole “Ringo” call (tho i can still hear it).

Would like to add that Winn corrects Lewinsohn in the same entry which reads:
Although Mark Lewinsohn’s two books (Recording Sessions and Chronicles) indicate that Paul’s exaggerated “count-in” was only added on May 16, it is present on this take, and was probably spoken during the vocal overdub. As Lewinsohn’s liner notes from Anthology 2 , written more recently, denote that take 11 from this date is what we are hearing (and John Barrett’s tape log has no mention of any May 16 overdub work on “Taxman “), I’m assuming the earlier reference was in error.
I’ll start writing my book now. Expect it in the year 3023 (coincidently the same year we get the Archive release of Paul’s ‘Off The Ground ‘ album – couldn’t resist).

LOL. You are very consistent, MMM.
Your book will be very thorough. Is it available for pre-order on Amazon yet? Will there be more than one version?

I’ll be selling each page individually, £3 each. Its the way forward for books. There will also be a deluxe edition with special paper that comes from a tree in my backyard, the tree type isn’t at all rare in itself but it was in my garden, no one else’s, so is rare. The paper is easy to rip, ruined when in contact with water, can be drawn over by any child with a felt tip, and is great for sticking under a wonky table to balance it out.
Im willing to take advances for the book now (release date 3023) so PM me all your bank details and in reply when you get the book if you don’t like it I will happily consider refunding you (to be able to claim a refund it has to be you*, not a family member, friend, relative or clone).
* being cryogenically frozen automatically immediately waves your right to a refund.
Right. Back to Taxman . I like the live in Japan version and we get to see George perform it live.

Enjoyed the video. Speaking of Japan and writing/selling pages at a time: Have you ever heard of cellphone novels?

No, never heard of them. Writing a book on your cellphone! Sending a text saying hello is bad enough, writing 1000 characters per page on it would end up with the phone going in the nearest river. I detest mobile phones, absolutely hate the things.

Thank you!! That is what I read somewhere too yesterday while trying to answer my own question. I thought the slow countdown sounded like George…so it must be George’s voice counting slow and Paul in the background? And the word I thought was “go”, must be “four”?
I also read somewhere, that the cough was George…but I can’t find where I read that! ARGH!

For the longest time I was SURE that it was Paul doing the “real” (1234) count-in and George doing the fake overdubbed (123412) one, and I argued that that was the case here on this forum. Then, on some thread several months ago, somebody claimed that it was George doing both of them, and provided a link to the isolated tracks. And I was skeptical, but I listened AND I WAS CONVINCED! And admitted I’d been wrong.
And wow I won’t be convinced otherwise. Give the isolated tracks a listen (sorry I’m too lazy to find a convenient link) and you, too, will be convinced that the count-ins are George and George.
(Unless you AREN’T convinced. And if you aren’t…hey, I’m totally cool with that! But you probably will be.)
No idea who’s coughing.
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Right at the beginning and by jove that sounds like George.
I tell you now that one day the Ahhs will be identified and it will be Ringo with ADT and some other strange effects and the whole world will go “huh! ok. If we were wrong about that then sure you can have that and i’ll have this” and world peace will break out.

Thanks! So, if they are George and George…the cough must be George too!? Thanks for helping me out! And thanks MMM for the ^^^link
