This album is almost perfect in my opinion. But one thing that keeps it from being perfect is Yellow Submarine , the song is so unfitting it almost ruins it all. Ruins the Lennon penned guitar driven tracks, the perfect voice of McCartney and the meaningful, beautiful tracks of Harrison.

In my opinion, if they replaced Yellow Submarine with Rain on this album. It would be very worthy of a 100/100 rating from me.

I see what you’re saying; Rain would seem to fit better with the other songs on Revolver .

But, in my opinion, Yellow Submarine is an example of how diverse the Beatles’ songs were, and I honestly can’t imagine it being replaced by anything, even Rain .

Plus, Ringo got his song for the album. a-hard-days-night-ringo-10

Yeah, I’m in no way disregarding the song in general. But they should of just had it as a single and a single only. Maybe on some compilation albums. Whether the song is better than Rain Rain would of fit way better.

In my opinion, “Yellow Submarine ” is a fantastic addition to a fantastic album BECAUSE it’s so lightweight and novelty-ish. It just shows how all-encompassing Revolver is, that it has room for something so silly as “Yellow Submarine ” in addition to the almost morbidly serious “Eleanor Rigby “. (A point driven home more fully on the single pairing those two songs.) Also, it’s formally interesting to have a song whose instrumentation depends so much on live sound effects and studio chatter, just like Revolver ‘s other experiments involving tape loops and backward guitars and Indian instrumentation. (Although I do wish they’d used the more daring earlier mix, which has so many more effects and Ringo’s spoken-word introduction.) Finally, I don’t even think YS is the weakest song on the album – “Good Day Sunshine ” strikes me as a more unimaginative piece of work.

As for “Rain “: Yeah, it would’ve made Revolver even better as a whole…but a 16-song album featuring both Rain ” and “Paperback Writer ” would’ve been best of all!

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 Agreed… except I don’t think Yellow Submarine is better than Good Day Sunshine .

Why would anybody want to replace Yellow Submarine ? That’s one of their happiest songs, and it’s definitely the happiest off Revolver . My brother always skips YS when we’re listening to Revolver in the car, and that really annoys me. It’s not Revolver without Yellow Submarine . I don’t think I’d like it if they had only added Rain and not Paperback Writer , or the other way around. It has always annoyed me how they have Get Back on Let It Be , but they don’t have Don’t Let Me Down . Either add them both, or keep them both off.

I never understood what people have against Yellow Submarine . It’s happy, it’s catchy and it’s not even close to their weakest songs.

Plus, it’s Ringo’s song on the album. Of course Rain is great, but if they wanted that on it, they should’ve left off something else IMO. Or just don’t give a s**t and add both Paperback Writer and Rain on Revolver .

This isn’t the right thread to rant about it, but I’m STILL opposed to that English practice of releasing singles separate from albums! “Creating value for the fans”, nonsense – how is a 14-song Beatles For Sale LESS valuable than a 16-song album with “I Feel Fine /She’s A Woman ” added?!

Yellow Sub and Eleanor Rigby were the single from Revolver getting all the air-play. No one had heard them before…….No one was bored with them. Two fantastically different songs to light up our lives……..And they did.

People listening today can perhaps judge more pragmatically than we could caught up in all……Pick them to bits by all means but you can’t really expect to recreate the excitement they caused as fresh young Beatle songs bursting into and enriching our lives…….

“yellow submarine” in my opinion is a piece of garbage and an absolute stain on “revolver”….. i’m always tempted to skip it.

A few years back, I was in Italy on the island of Capri when a group of 5-6 year olds walked by. They were singing “Yellow Submarine .”

In my workplace, the one song people identify with the Beatles is “Yellow Submarine .”

A song with that kind of staying power is not garbage.

You might not like it. You might find it simplistic. You may not care that it’s joyous and fun. That’s fine – but garbage it isn’t.

If were gonna replace Yellow Submarine on Revolver , lets also replace also All You Need Is Love from Magical Mystery Tour since it is already on Yellow Submarine album and it is a worse song than Yellow Submarine .

Why not just ditch the Yellow Submarine album and move the exclusive Beatles material to MMT. As much as i like some of them i doubt many would be bothered if they weren’t on the album. Maybe they could compose an album with all of the instrumental pieces from the movie soundtracks for the die-hards.

“You can’t release singles off an LP after the LP’s been out.”  John Lennon 17 November 1964, with specific reference to Beatles For Sale !

Brian Matthew: “A lot of people do.”

Paul: “Well, in America they do.”

John: “Well, they’re different over there, aren’t they?”

And, as regards Yellow Submarine – well, Revolver was the first album I ever bought, and I bought it the day it came out. I was 14, going on 15. The Beatles were the biggest thing ever, and Yellow Submarine  was both on the album and the A side of the simultaneous single (the only time they ever released an album and a single taken from it simultaneously, I think), so YS has been a part of my personal musical infrastructure from the time it first appeared.

Importantly, at the time I (and many others) saw nothing out of the ordinary in the appearance of this song as the A side of a Beatles single. Hindsight, of course, leads you to go “WTF? A kiddies’ singalong about a submarine? With Ringo on lead vocal? Were they insane?”

They were, in fact, far from insane. YS was prime evidence of just how eclectic The Beatles were – out of nowhere came this song, completely out of step with everything else around (including their own back catalogue) but totally, perfectly in tune with their traditional British sensibilities, full of humour and melody, suitable for grannies and kiddies (and, if the truth be told, record-buying youth too – it wasn’t yet fashionable to knock The Beatles), and completely disarming in its off-the-wall charm.

Ringo was the perfect choice to sing it – one can’t imagine any of the others delivering this preposterous nonsense with the dignified integrity imparted to it by Ringo’s dolorous lack of vocal technique. Even so, one of the joys of this track is the commitment with which the others throw themselves into it – the delight in coming up with daft sound effects is self-evident, Lennon’s silly voices add the perfect manic counterpoint to Ringo’s straight-faced narration, and the wholehearted gusto and abandonment with which all four of them leap headlong into the final robust chorus singalong (complete with banging the big bass drum, brass band style) linger long after the song has faded out.

Far from being a trivial throwaway, this song is actually an undervalued masterpiece (albeit a rather unconventional one).
