I don’t know if anyone will read this as the last post date is 5 months ago.  I found a very favorable review of Revolver here.  Well the first 4 paragraphs are a glittering review, then it turns into a sales pitch for a remastered version or something on cd.  Me, I kinda tend towards Peppers being my fave, but Abbey Road and Revolver are both right up there, practically tied (or taking the lead on any particular day a-hard-days-night-george-10.

I never realised how much I love Revolver until recently, actually. It’s very experimental and unique, but that’s why I love it so much.

I have been listening to Revolver so much lately that when I want to put it on, I try to think of something else so I won’t get burned out on Revolver !

Is it weird that my favourites are Help ! and Magical Mystery Tour ? I of course love Revolver and Sgt Pepper too but my favourite songs are on H and MMT.

I don’t think Revolver is underrated by anyone who has actually listened to its genius. I think with Pepper it was just such a radical thing when it came out. Not just the songs, the whole concept of it, the album cover, the psychadelia, all the urban legends and supposed references in it. Although they started being more innovative even as far back as Rubber Soul , Pepper was the climax of all that experimenting and change from lovable mop tops to the moustached and grown up legends that were emerging.

As far as MMT, it does have 4 of my “favorite” Beatles songs (There is a sometimes changing set of about 30 that tie for my favorite).  Penny Lane is one of my very favorite Beatles songs (always in the top 5), and there’s Strawberry Fields Forever , Fool on the Hill, and All You Need Is Love .  It definitely rates higher (4th) than I put it on a “list” of worst to best in the canon topic, but another change has been made to the list as well.

That change would be Revolver .  I’m not sure where I ranked it before, 4th or 5th, but like some others have said, I now think it’s on par with Sgt. Pepper ‘s and Abbey Road .  Rolling Stone (and others) consistently place Pepper’s first all time, so everyone with a little horse sense says it is.  But when you get a lot of horse sense, you realize what a masterpiece Revolver is (all imo of course).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it the first use of backwards music?  If not, it’s the first notable use of it.  Surely tape loops had been used before, but never to such dramatic effect.  IMO, George really came into his own as a writer with Taxman (not that If I Needed Someone isn’t a great song, but it doesn’t hit me as hard as Taxman ).  The only throwaway song is Doctor Robert , and it seems every album has one (though it may be different for different people a-hard-days-night-george-10.  I think John and  Paul really broke into the stratosphere here, with Eleanor Rigby , Here, There And Everywhere , And Your Bird Can Sing , and Tomorrow Never Knows all being really good, and the rest solid as well.

For those who gave love to Rubber Soul , I agree it’s a great album and imo Paul and John wrote their first really solid album, cover to cover (excepting George’s songs).  But I can’t move it higher than 5th.

Finally, or first off in chronological order, Beatles For Sale is, imo, a transition album and shows some signs of growing pains.  It ranks behind Help ! in 7th, currently, on my scale (subject to change without notice).

(I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean to turn this into an album ranking post, I wanted to address the ones everyone had mentioned)

An example of a truly underrated album would be Beatles For Sale

Yeah, I’ve found that people do that a lot. Say that Sgt. Pepper is ”the best” without actually having listened to it, in-full or at all, or having a different opinion themselves. Because everyone ”knows it is”, they just don’t argue. Silly, really, as it’s subjective.

Sgt Pepper is the best LP cover hands down followed by the MMT EP.

Oh, and the music ain’t too bad either, if you like that kind of stuff…..a-hard-days-night-paul-11

Yeah, it was pretty much the first major use of reversed sound in pop music. I remember reading awhile back about some little-known rock band (or individual) who did it earlier, and I sure wish I could remember who it was.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Criminally underrated? really? this album has been praised and discussed since it’s inception. an excellent book  ” REVOLVER how the BEATLES reimagined rock’n’roll” by Robert Rodriguez basically says it all .you might want to take a few deep breaths and re think that post heading son.

Beatles For Sale is often overlooked but any album containing ” Honey Don’t ” and the unforgiveable  ” Mr Moonlight ” can’t be rated with REVOLVER.

I thought this forum was going to be educational ,all I have discovered so far is how little some people know and really liking something makes it great ( subjectively? who cares)

Am currently reading that Robert Rodriguez book, it is excellent. He does say that whilst Pepper for years got all the acclaim Revolver is the group masterpiece and has only recently (last 10 years or so) become viewed as the greatest Beatles album. So whilst its never been criminally underrated, it was overlooked.

And please be mindful of how you respond to people. I’m sure your post wasn’t meant to be taken how it could be read but a few mis-phrased (that not a word but it should be) words can lead to wrong impressions being taken. It is great to have you here unclegilly and its nice to see a wee bit of fire in posts. Hopefully you’ll stick around.

@Von Bontee @vonbontee @Matt Busby Of course, one infamous example of backwards music that pre-dates Revolver  – if only by a month – was the b-side of Napoleon XIV’s single They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haa! Titled !aaH-aH, yawA eM ekaT ot gnimoC er’yehT, it was the a-side reversed!

Yeah, I’d considered that one but didn’t bother looking up the date it was released! Thanks for that.

There’s no way I’ll remember that other individual without doing a search – that’s how I found it the first time, on some other forgotten messageboard. I’m not sure that music was even released at the time, but it was recorded prior to “Rain ” anyways.
