IMDeWalrus said, “Magical Mystery Tour — a Capitol Records creation rather than a true Beatles album, but a darn good one”

Mr Sun King CT said, “Magical Mystery Tour – With the film songs being generally good, it took side two (with I Am The Walrus ) to lift this album. It did. It has the best 4 song string in any Beatles album (Strawberry Fields to All You Need Is Love ), and it takes a lot to beat Pepper. This does.”

[small detail: on my album, I Am The Walrus ends Side 1]

Magical Mystery Tour is really Past Masters 0.5

Yes, of course the addition of “Strawberry Fields,” “Penny Lane ,” and “All You Need Is Love ” elevates the album to great heights – but it’s purely artificial.

IMO, if you’re gonna rank MMT you have to either

– just use the British EP  or

– allow Past Masters 1 and 2 into your ranking ….

Good point — if I was to rank MMT in its original form (a double EP), it would drop well down the list — then again, I’d probably also have to include the EP  “Long Tall Sally ” which contains songs otherwise unavailable to that point — and perhaps the British LP  “A Collection of Beatles Oldies” — so I’ll just leave my list as is.

If I included the two Past Masters CD’s in my list, they would rank very high indeed.

I've got nothing to say, but it's okay..

GOOD MORNING!

If MMT was rated based on the ep it would be quite low with only I Am The Walrus being exceptional and The Fool On The Hill excellent, all the rest are average. Wait i list MMT at #12 out of 13 anyway; IATW, SFF, TFOTH, BYARM: 2 exceptional 2 excellent. Yeah still #12.a-hard-days-night-ringo-7

13) Yellow Submarine : “Hey Bulldog ” is about the only memorable song on the album for me. The actual songYellow Submarine ” may be a classic in the world of Beatles music, but it can also be found on Revolover. So the big, yellow ship gets last place for me.

12) Magical Mystery Tour : Highlights of the album include “I Am The Walrus “, “Strawberry Fields Forever “, and “All You Need Is Love “, but the album as a whole feels more like a collection of singles rather than an album with a nice, artistic flow of songs (as demonstrated in Sgt. Pepper just before its release).

11) Please Please Me : Although this was my first Beatles album (and will therefore always hold a special place in my heart), The Beatles just get better and better as the years go on, don’t they? Songs that I quite enjoy include”I Saw Her Standing There “, “Please Please Me “, “P.S. I Love You”, and “Twist And Shout “.

10) A Hard Day’s Night : For some reason, I have always been a sucker for John’s harmonica playing. And AHDN ? Well, it has a lot of John’s “harmonica songs” haha. That put aside, I still find my favorite song on the album to be Paul’s “And I Love Her “.

09) Beatles For Sale : SOLD! I really enjoy this album, but I find myself being more drawn to their mid-to-late period music. “No Reply ” is an excellent kick-off for the album and “I’ll Follow The Sun ” is definitely one of my favorite karaoke songs, but just as I said for PPM : The Beatles just get better and better…

08) Help !: It may be my favorite Beatles movie, but the album itself just doesn’t do it for me. Don’t get me wrong, some of my favorite tracks are on it: “Help !”, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away “, “Ticket To Ride “, and “I’ve Just Seen A Face “; but it has too many lowlights. These are mainly George’s contributions (sorry, George fans; I just think he hadn’t hit his songwriting peak quite yet…). But I believe the singles that came from this album were some of their best in the end.

07) Let It Be …Naked: Sorry I had to rank mine as the Naked version, but that’s unfortunately the only version I have of this album (…right now: I’ll get LIB one of these days!). I love the version of “Across The Universe ” that was chosen for this album: it really makes it easy to see why John ranked this song as one of the best, if not the best, songs he ever wrote. Another I really enjoy is “Two Of Us ” because it’s just a feel-good song and (to Paul’s delight) is an excellent song to listen to in the car. “Don’t Let Me Down ” is one of my favorite songs from John: the emotion and raw energy is enough to send chills up my spine. And finally, “I’ve Got A Feeling ” just makes me have a good feeling whenever I listen to it. Great song.

06) The Beatles: Too many great songs to even start mentioning them.

05) With The Beatles : My favorite album from their early period. The energy is fantastic and their songwriting had already improved from the few songs they contributed to PPM . “All My Loving ” and “It Won’t Be Long ” serve as proof of that. As far as covers go, George did an excellent job on “Roll Over Beethoven ” and John’s take on “Please Mister Postman ” made a cover one of my favorite Beatles songs.

04) Revolver : Like George said, Rubber Soul and Revolver could have been the same album with two volumes. However, I’m more of a Volume One type of gal. Highlights of the album include “Eleanor Rigby “, “I’m Only Sleeping “, “Here, There And Everywhere “, and “Taxman ” (one of my favorite George songs).

03) Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band: You can just hear why this album was such a stepping stone for The Beatles…and for the music industry PERIOD. Long story short, I love this album!

02) Rubber Soul : When you have an album with personal favorites such as “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown”, “Nowhere Man “, “Girl”, and “In My Life “, how can it not be one of your favorite albums?

01) Abbey Road : Winner!!! To me, it just felt like the end. But what a great finale!

If you’re a real beatles fan (collector), like me, buy let it be because you need it for your collection but if you just want to listen to the music you only need Let It Be … Naked. Naked is a much better album than let it be, spector’s orchestra doesn’t sound very good on the three songs which feature them on let it be and I don’t like the dialogue snippets before (or after) the songs, because if I want to hear dialogue from the get back sessions I can listen to the fly on the wall disc included on let it be… naked and they annoy me when I want to listen to the songs. Of course it’s a must-have for a beatles collector but (for example) I never listen to it, I just listen to Naked.

Anyway I agree with Abbey Road on number 1, it’s also my favourite album

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Oh, totally agreed! I have every intention of buying Let It Be  sometime in the future. I just don’t have it yet. And although many fans seem to enjoy Naked more, I want LIB strictly for collection purposes (as you stated).

14. Past Masters , Vol. 1
13. Anthology 1

I will never, never buy the argumen that releasing singes FROM an album is “ripping off fans”. Giving consumers a chance to buy a 16-song version of Rubber Soul that includes “Day Tripper /We Can Work It Out ” is a ripoff?

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I admire everybody’s efforts on these posts, because I just can’t wrap my brain around it.  It’s just so much good music, I find it way too hard to decide!  Although I will say, that if someone held a gun to my head and said I HAD to choose my favourite album, it would be Sgt. Pepper heart

"Please don't bring your banjo back, I know where it's been..  I wasn't hardly gone a day, when it became the scene..  Banjos!  Banjos!  All the time, I can't forget that tune..  and if I ever see another banjo, I'm going out and buy a big balloon!"

Pretty difficult to determine. I’ve never really tried to rank the albums (except my favorite album)

13) Yellow Submarine – around 70% of the album was either already released or instrumentals.

12) Beatles For Sale – sorry, folks, I’m not a huge fan of this one.

11) With The Beatles – had some good ones and some mediocre ones.

10) Please Please Me – I either really liked the song or did not like the song at all (“Please Please Me ” to “Ask Me Why “)

09) A Hard Day’s Night – First (and last) full Lennon/McCartney album, had some that were a bit too noisy

08) Let It Be – I think the “Get Back ” version is better than the Let It Be version, still a good album.

07) Help ! – A good album IMO, had some songs that were questionable though (“Dizzy Miss Lizzy “)

06) Rubber Soul – I know many will disagree about the ranking on this, but I still love the album, I just think the 5 others are better.

05) Revolver – Another one which people will disagree with me about. It’s a masterpiece, though.

04) The Beatles (White Album ) – I think if it was condensed into one album it could have been their best, still great none the less.

03) Magical Mystery Tour – Side 1 was okay, while side 2 was The Beatles at their best.

02) Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band – So ahead of it’s time, it’s ahead of present time.

01) Abbey Road – The greatest possible way for a band to go out was this album – they went out with a bang.
