"The best band? The Beatles. The most overrated band? The Beatles."

Um...
Overrated: Sgt. Pepper . It's great, mind you, but still....
Underrated: With the Beatles. I don't care how great people say it is, they're still underrating it!

NOTHING related to the Beatles is overrated, except for Pattie Boyd (ugh), but for the underrated one, I'd have to say Beatles For Sale or Rubber Soul .
I'm in love, but I'm lazy.

Overrated: Sgt. Pepper (It's still an amazing album but it is super overrated.)
Underrated: I would say most of their early albums. Like With the Beatles, and I think A Hard Days Night is pretty underrated.

I don't know if Pepper's overrated, as a whole album it might be one of their best, but in terms of individual songs it's just not as good as say Revolver . But if you listen to the whole thing it's still fantastic, it's just I've never had the urge to listen to Fixing A Hole by itself or most of the other songs by themselves.

That's what I was thinking too. I mean the only songs on there that I would ever want to listen to by themselves are probably A Day In The Life and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds . Otherwise individually I wouldn't listen to most of those songs regularly.

Without Paul's Parodies and exotic Styles The White Album would be the most critically acclaimed album
It has 13 amazing songs better than most of Pepper

I think Pepper has been overrated for so long that it's actually become underrated again! And I often listen to individual songs from it. "Getting Better " is such an unheralded little gem.
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions, Marvin Gaye. PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.
I think the White Album is overrated. It's a great album (obviously) but in terms of songwriting, innovation or performance it's put in the shade by Revolver , Pepper and Abbey Road .

To me, this topic is very subjective and I have thought about it for a long time. Therefore, when I think about the underrated question, I try to think about it from the perspective of a few of my friends. These friends like The Beatles but are not hardcore obsessive/compulsive (OK, a lunatic) Beatles fans like me. Whenever any Beatles discussion comes up, they talk mostly about Pepper, The White Album , Abbey Road and to some degree Magical Mystery Tour (mostly because of Walrus and Strawberry Fields). Basically, unless I start the conversation, no one brings up anything prior to Rubber Soul .
So, if non-hardcore obsessive/compulsive (yes, a lunatic) Beatles fans are the basis, I would have to say all 5 of the early albums are way underrated. Lately, I just can’t seem to get enough of With the Beatles and A Hard Day’s Night.
As for overrated, I am not going to repeat my feelings on Pepper here. I've done it enough in other threads. The White Album is also in the overrated category for me. I never skip a song on any Beatles album but have been very tempted to skip over at least a handful on TWA. No, I will not say which ones because I don’t want to derail another thread. I just can’t help agreeing with George Martin that a fine album could have been really special had it been trimmed down to the best 14 tracks.
