I was very impressed with many of the cover versions on this album, and some of them would’ve improved their earlier studio albums.
Crying, Waiting, Hoping would not sound out of place on Please Please Me , and it’s a better vocal performance than Chains .
Other songs include Some Other Guy, and To Know Her is To Love Her.

Don’t Ever Change; makes me wonder why the Paul/George duet style wasn’t used more often. And Ooh! My Soul would have been a nice and less obvious alternative to Long Tall Sally if extended a little.

Offline “I’ll Be on My Way” sounds like some of the songs on A Hard Day’s Night . They could have added this song to the album while still perserving the beauty that comes from the fact that all of the songs were written by Lennon/McCartney.

Offline I’d have liked The Honeymoon Song instead of A Taste Of Honey on Please Please Me . ATOH is too slow and plodding and those “doo doo doo doo” vocals are yucky whereas George plays a gorgeous solo on THS and i prefer Pauls vocal.
Also Sure To Fall on Beatles For Sale , would give the album a more rockabilly feel, and the beatles were still performing it in ’64 albeit in May so they still knew the song.

Offline I consider ‘To know her is to love her’ to be one of the best examples of how wonderful The Beatles could be at harmonies, it definitely would of been worthy of a place on an album. It would of suited being on the Please Please Me lp quite well.
And I absolutely LOVE ‘Sweet little sixteen’, I think John kinda killed it on his Rock ‘N’ Roll album.
Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.

“Some Other Guy” absolutely rocks. In a book I read about The Cavern, the fact was brought up that a lot of Merseyside bands covered this song. Some said there were groups that did it better than The Beatles. They said the best version was done by The Big Three.
Anyway, this is another awesome song written by the dynamic duo of Leiber and Stoller and I could imagine it on either of The Beatles’ first 2 albums.

Offline I believe that Glad All Over would suit a spot on With The Beatles instead of Devil In Her Heart . Some Other Guy would also fit the album i think, probably replacing “You Really Gotta Hold On Me”

I once read (from Lewinson? It was some time ago, so I don’t quite remember who…) that “Some Other Guy” never got committed to an album after the “We Want Pete!” incident at the Cavern Club when the Beatles got filmed for their TV debut. I guess they didn’t want that song stuck to them knowing it could perhaps bring comparsions to Pete Best, that “other guy” who Ringo replaced.

I just discovered a gem, today. Its name is I’ll Be On My Way. It is 52 years old but it is a beauty. They did not keep it, they did not finish it up, they did not care for it. I read a comment, a mean comment from Lennon in 1980 about this song and I wondered.. I suddenly came to wonder how many songs Paul may have abandoned in his life, due to hearing so much condescending comments from the person whose opinion meant the world to him! —- Beautiful, beautiful song to me, may you be heard, may you survive!

Offline I love the song but i can see why they gave it away what with rhymes such as moonlight and June light. A lot of artists wouldn’t have minded such lyrics whereas lennon and McCartney did, tho at times they let some lightweight words pass.

Offline I completely agree – always loved this one right back from when I first heard it on the Beatles at the Beeb radio show in ’82.
Although the audio quality isn’t great, I reckon Keep Your Hands Off My Baby and I’m Talkin’ About You would have made great album tracks.

Offline ‘Lonesome Tears in My Eyes ‘ would have been a fabulous studio cover what with Ringo playing all over his kit, George’s gorgeous lead guitar work and John’s sorrow-filled vocal. Not sure if it would have fit on either of their first two albums tho.

I’m only discovering this gem of an album now, and I wish I had found it sooner. So many fabulous songs on this one! Some of my favourites are Keep Your Hands Off My Baby, I’ll Be On My Way, Young Blood, Some Other Guy, I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry Over You, Crying Waiting Hoping, To Know Her Is To Love Her…. And the list goes on. Most of the songs on this one would’ve been worthy of a spot on a studio album. Alas…
