Don’t think there’s been a topic on this, but yeah I thought it’d be cool to discuss the back covers of Beatle albums.

My personal favourite of their back covers is Revolver . I’d go as far to say that the photo by Robert Whittaker (the one used for the album) is one of my favourite images of the Beatles. I can’t think of many other photos where they look as cool stuart-sutcliffe

Aside from Revolver , I think the Abbey Road and Rubber Soul back covers are pretty awesome.

That is a great unposed photo on Revolver – I like the blackness, and how casual they all look in their glasses. But too many of those covers suffer from an unremarkable mix of photos and text. So gimme BFS, for that great unsmiling unblemished-by-writing Hyde Park photo mirroring the front; and AR for another nice photo and the creation of an enduring mystery about blue dress woman.

Also, SP is notable and groundbreaking. And like I say on the other LP cover thread, TB has an elegance of concept that doesn’t quite make up for how uninteresting it is to look at. (Unless you’ve got a used copy uniquely and creatively defaced, like in the collection owned by that collector dude named Chang somebody (I think)

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I like the pictures specifically on the back of the AHDN album, especially Ringo’s because it reminds me of the This Boy scene from the film. a-hard-days-night-ringo-10

I’ve always liked the photo from Tittenhurst on the back of Hey Jude . Cool outfits.

My favorite Beatles back cover is Rubber Soul mostly for the picture of Paul smoking and the one of George wearing a cowboy hat.

The inside of Beatles For Sale , though, I like better than any back cover. The picture of them playing in DC has always been one of my favorite pictures of them.rs150_rs43_beatles-image-1.jpg?w=1200&h=630&crop=1Image Enlarger

I also like what Derek Taylor wrote on the inside, especially this: “The kids of AD 2000 will draw from the music much the same sense of well being and warmth as we do today. For the magic of the Beatles is, I suspect, timeless and ageless. It has broken all frontiers and barriers. It has cut through differences of race, age and class. It is adored by the world.”

Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band because they print out the lyrics to the entire album on the back cover, something that all bands should do.

Sgt Pepper for me. The first album to list all the words to the songs.

Being a John & Yoko album and all, I guess that ‘Two Virgins ‘ (with the brown paper bag on, of course) doesn’t count…  Most definitely, the ‘White Album ‘…  Very Nice Compliment to the front cover…  A “reflection”, if you will, of the brand new Apple label donning the vinyl on the inside…  John & Yoko’s album was better, in that regard, for a brown paper bag with an apple in it strikes a chord with all of us…  The Beatles’ album cover reflected white ivory floors with golden trim and an apple art exhibit on display instead…:-)

Kudos for the Beatles For Sale back cover, it was literally the only Beatles back cover I had to look at through childhood, and there’s a lot to be said for the Revolver back cover, bunch of rock stars there. Even that one has variants you might not know about!

I’m also interested in how those back covers progressed, like the front covers. Over time they become less wordy, less conversational almost. The blurbs disappear, as often do the photos (cf vinyl White Album , Magical Mystery Tour ), Abbey Road decides to have the band photo on the front and someone walks by the album name and track list on the back. Let It Be is a sad little counterpoint to Revolver , yes the guys are on the back but they’re locked in little boxes now, like they have been since the White Album .

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

OTM…Let it Be back (and front) cover depressing in several ways, including that bullshit blurb about how “this is a new phase Beatles album”…the post-breakup phase.

Anguished photo of John with guitar is kinda cool.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.
