Why is Beatles For Sale so underrated

I have thought about the same thing about Beatles For Sale . This album is definitely underrated. We must remember that the Beatles themselves had a very tight time schedule, with World tour and live performances, TV shows etc. The pressure on them was extreme. Beatlemania was taking its’ toll. And the drugs the Beatles used to manage that pressure made the matters worse for them. EMI also wanted the album to be released on time for Christmas sale, and I think that made extra pressure on the group. Yes, the Beatles had to make cover versions of 1950’s rock’n’roll songs, but the cover versions were really great. Personally, I find the Beatles’ version of Rock’n’Roll Music greater than Chuck Berry’s original version, and the Beatles’ version of Words Of Love greater than Buddy Holly’s original version.

Personally I think this album is underrated because it was made by the Beatles. If it had been made by any other group, I don’t think it would be underrated the same way.

BFS is the album that I grew to appreciate the most out of the albums. I used to think it was a dip of sorts, a breather after AHDN , before they moved onto Help . But there’s so much gold on there. Any other band would like to have this in their canon.

Not like, LOVE.

This album very well might be my favorite after Help , Rubber Soul , AHDN , and Revolver .

Love one another.

I gotta say Eight Days A Week is perfection. Especially the Anthology demos with the opening harmonies.

It's got songs that other bands would die for.......Wouldn't be without it in my life ........But I've always thought it was the weakest album barring Please Please Me .

'No Reply ' was the start of something that would be megatons bigger than a pop boy band.

I have a friend who always says it's his favourite.....Who knows?

I’m A Loser is one of the purest forms of self analysis John ever did, way before Plastic Ono. Love the melody too.

Something random I just noticed concerning this song: both of John's Dylan-inspired songs (I'm A Loser , You've Got To Hide Your Love Away ) use the word "clown" and in an interview John said he hated the word clown and never used it until he realized Bob Dylan used it.

It's underrated because most of the covers are bland/crap (I'm partial to Words Of Love and Honey Don't ). But it's their first album to show a more mature side of them.

Underrated? I wouldn't say so. It's one of the Beatles least accomplished full albums, so it deserves it low place in the canon. It was also leagues ahead of what everyone else was putting out in 1964. I think that is realized and it has a high place in the Rock pantheon. This was the British album that was also the least hurt by the Capitol Records. They managed to split up the bad stuff (and the good stuff too) between Beatles 65 and Beatles VI so when listening to BFS for the first time many Americans were a little underwhelmed. Just a theory....

What is happening? And tell me how you've been.

Likely because back then the great songs were siphoned off to be single issues (I Feel Fine /She's A Woman ). If they had used more American marketing by including I Feel Fine on Beatles For Sale , opinions might be very different.  I think With the Beatles suffers the same fate. Also, I think the return to derivative covers of others' songs is overshadowed by the all Lennon-McCartney A Hard Days' Night issued previously in 1964.  It's also a sad cover, with everyone looking tired, although appropriate for the album title.

Been listening to this album a lot recently - it is so good.

Baby’s In Black: John’s voice and the melody at .49 “oh how look will it take till she sees the mistake she has made” is absolute bliss. As good as the Happiness Is A Warm Gun harmony transition in my opinion.

Every Little Thing : The brief instrumental from 1.22 - 1.33.

I was listening to this album last weekend while I was working in the backyard and it's definitely better than my memories of it. I sort of thought of it as this downbeat, rushed thing bogged down with covers, but "No Reply ," "I'm A Loser ," "Baby's In Black " "Every Little Thing " and "What You're Doing " are grrrrrreat. I'm not big on "I'll Follow The Sun " or "Eight Days A Week " but they'd be the best song on most artists' albums. "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party " is a great little country rocker. Of the covers, "Mr. Moonlight" stands out but they're all pretty solid.

There is such incredible depth to the Beatles' catalogue, literally everything they recorded has some value...

Maybe reading the recent posts in this thread got the album worked into my unconscious because I casually picked it out to listen today as I work.

The observation that I want to make is this ... when I vote on or score songs for the projects we do here on the forum, and I rate a song as "not so good," I will later find myself singing and swaying along to it like it is in my top 10. Today that song is I'll Follow The Sun .

It's a brilliant five-track start and 6-track ending but it comes to a shuddering halt for around 7 minutes after John screams the first 'Mr. Moonlight'.

Kansas City is infectious. The transition to the Hey Hey Hey especially. I prefer the later albums like The White Album , but I think this type of energy was the entry point that really excited me all those years ago. The guitar work is spot on.
