Some of the early stuff was really for popularity in my opinion, but Beatles For Sale was a bit of a turning point. They went almost country with the album. When I listen to the album all the way through, I usually skip Mr. Moonlight except for the opening note. No Reply , I’m A Loser , and Baby’s In Black really set off their more inventive lyrics coming into their songs. I overall think it is an underrated album that many people ignore when thinking of the Beatles.

Offline I can’t imagine anyone saying they hate this album. It’s not one of my top BEATLE albums but it’s a Beatle album and hence a damn good collection by simple definition!

Offline I’ve never really been crazy about any of the covers, and I’ve always thought it was a bit odd that they went from writing the entirety of AHDN to then releasing an album where nearly half the songs are covers. It just feels like they went back a step, I kind of see the album as the filler between the two movie soundtracks.

Well, it’s well established how exhausted they were from touring the USA and elsewhere, so it was really more of a holding pattern than a step backward.

Offline I like Beatles For Sale . It is a good album. My favorites are many. Their songs are better than the other ones. It is not my favorite Beatles album. Maybe third to last. Or something else even. I do not like Words Of Love much. I do like Mr. Moonlight and I’m A Loser and others. Beatles For Sale is a really good album. Even for The Beatles.

I think Beatles For Sale is generally considered the weakest Beatles (or, at least, one of the weakest) album(s) because, for them, it easily represented the smallest step forward from the album that immediately preceded it (until late ’67, when such progress no longer seemed relevant); most of their compositions for this album wouldn’t have sounded out of place on A Hard Day’s Night (indeed, “No Reply ” actually originally dates from those sessions). But, again, considering the hectic year they had, it’s probably a miracle they were able to come up with 10 originals (including “I Feel Fine ” and “She’s A Woman “) to put out on their end-of-the-year album and accompanying single. And, like any Beatles album, it’s still good in its own right.

Offline This is still one of my favorite albums do to the fact of the cover songs. The Beatles were a cover band before they made it big and I always felt they did a better cover version then the original artists.

Offline Though it’s not my favorite Beatles album, I like Beatles For Sale a lot. I don’t get why so many people knock this album; well, actually, yeah, I do: It’s because half of the songs are cover songs. Honestly, the only cover I really like is Rock And Roll Music , but there are plenty of great original songs, too. People seem to forget all about songs like No Reply , I’ll Follow The Sun , What You’re Doing , and some of the other amazing songs when they talk about this album, leaving only bad things to say. Beatles For Sale is really good, just very overlooked.

Offline I finished reading a book yesterday (which I hated) by this music critic and I know it’s his job to be critical (as his occupation title suggests) but he had nothing good to say about the album. Is it their best? No. Is it better than A Hard Day’s Night ? No. But I still think that it’s good. I’ll Follow The Sun and No Reply being my favourites. And as for the covers, Words Of Love is really great. The reason they did so many covers is because of the amount of time they had to write and record all the tracks in time to get it out for Christmas, which wasn’t their fault. All in all, I don’t know why people dislike it so much.

OK, no problem. Another reason why I don´t like the man is because he talks as if he´s important but I can´t say if he has done anything else noteworthy. Or anything else full stop. Maybe he has and he is important but I can´t find much info about him.

I read that book over a few weeks in Waterstones (a bookshop in Glasgow) a few years back. The more i read the worse it got and thankfully cant remember much about it apart from it being poorly written and containing a lot of errors – a very sloppy piece of work. On the positive side i never bought it as it would have been a complete waste of money and space in a box.

Can you just read books in Waterstones without buying them?? Anyway, yes I found quite a few errors as well. I would´ve never bought the book because I don´t think it even sounds interesting by reading the back (it´s just his opinion on everything they did, more or less) but it was a present from somebody. One of the worst books I have ever read.

How unfair. You can’t do that in my local Waterstones!
Bookshops are dying due to the days of cheaper internet prices, have to get money in somehow and letting someone put in a coffee shop whilst charging them a fortune for rent helps (unless Waterstones and Costa are owned by the same organisation and they get every single penny).
Right this must be one of the most off-topic threads ever.
A demo of I’ll Follow The Sun exists from 1960 and whilst not being as good as the commercial version it does have a lot of charm and an unused section (bridge?).

I’ve always thought this album to be the most underrated of all their albums. It’s my favorite early album of theirs, but HDN and Help are close ( I divide them between Help ! and Rubber Soul ).
Please don't wake me, no don't shake me, leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping~.
