There were early posts going about that Money wasn’t a true outtake. Haven’t been out and about yet to see if that’s been confirmed or disproved.

I haven’t heard it – yet.

I read that it was the final version without one of the overdubs – but as noted above I have difficulty telling these all apart anyway :)

I baulked at the price-then remembered I had an iTunes gift card! Certainly softened he blow.

Glad I got it, even though I have most of the tracks already (allegedly, Your Honour).Seems they chose the most presentable tracks (by way of audio quality) for the BBC Vol 2 release, as the BBC tracks here are poorer quality-wise, but much, much better performance-wise. I know which I’d sooner have, the material here is full of energy with some fantastic performances.

Likewise, (ironically), the stand-out track for me is the alt version of Money. It may be they used the latter portion of this for With The Beatles ? , but this one is absolutely superb, definitely benefits from not having the piano. It’s the closest I think we’ll get to how they must have sounded at The Cavern/Hamburg. Sensational.

So, where’s the rest of the 1963 material? I know Abbey Road /EMI wiped the tapes upto around She Loves You , but if they are including demos, there surely must be more? *Checks wallet*

Nice one on the gift card.  And as noted – that Money just blew me away – I was thinking the same about Hamburg – I would love to hear a cleaned up version of the tape from there.

Listening again it seems to be the same version as released on With The Beatles , minus the overdubs and mixing (eq/reverb etc). It’s also missing the 2 bar intro on piano and Ringo’s cross-stick snare beats. Bloomin’ marvellous though!

I got it as an early Christmas Present, and I will say, the studio outtakes sound absolutely amazing. Although, did there really have to be 12202031066516516 versions of A Taste Of Honey ?  (Alright, it’s only 4, but it felt like it was coming on  every other song.)

What is pirate bay? Torrents? I wonder if there is another way to get these besides iTunes and torrents.

$40…?  I think ‘no’.

I’m a working-class single Father with one income here.  Time to do the despicable and just DL the torrent.

Sorry folks.

To be fair though, I’ve paid good money for the vinyl box set, the stereo CDs, the new BBC set, the mono box set as well as the blu-rays, DVDs and the Anthology book.  I’ve paid many times over for the right to DL a hastily-compiled bare-bones set for free.

^If I were you I wouldn’t feel bad…it’s all bootleg stuff anyway that’s been available on the net for free for ages. If anything, it’s a bit presumptuous of Apple to charge so much for material that hardcore fans will already have and casual fans will probably not care about.

Yeah, doubtless I already have all of these recordings anyway.  I try to always pay for my music, and if this were a physical release I would have paid for it.

But not this.  A bunch of files and a cover photo is not worth 40 dollars.

Hmm – how many more times do I have to listen to it?  Not working so far :)

And I thought there were 5 1/2 versions, not just 4? – sigh!

For those put off by the high price, apparently (*cough*) it’s on the Pirate Bay.

Well, first of all, hello to everyone again, it has been a long time since I last logged in and this obscure release brought me back. Anyway, because it is indeed a high price, I went for that other option. I took a listen primarily to the studio outtakes, and yeah, they are an improvement over all the bootlegs I have heard; but the only one track that horrified me is One After 909 – Take 1. It seems that tape has suffered damage, because on the bootlegs is clean and crisp and here the sound is horribly distorted, with the sound dropping-out-like each beat. paul-mccartney I hope that this isn’t the case for those who have it legitimately, can anyone who have this confirm what I said? ahdn_paul_02

^ No problems on my version of that track tobm.  Of course, it breaks down around the 1.20 mark and they go into take 2.

Yeah, so probably I am the only one with that problem. But yeah, Take 2 has no sonic problems at all. Seems that I’ll have to wait a little more until someone has it corrected. Thanks for the quick response trcanberra a-hard-days-night-john-6.

I just snagged the torrent, its pretty cool. I am one of those guys who likes to have a very clean iTunes and I hate the presentation this came with not to mention all the annotation behind the song title. I hope they do start up the Anthology series again.

A couple of articles from wogblog:

An evaluation of the non-BBC tracks and the remaining tracks that haven’t been released and are in danger of falling into the Public Domain if not issued before the year ends (some not in the main list are in the comments section).

$40? It’s the equivalent of $57 over here in the UK.

For those who care, some of the recording dates are incorrect. Here’s a post outlining the errors.

You can now get the On Air collection box on amazon for £9 less than this bootleg compilation.
