Love the way Paul trills “Bulldog Drummond” in Searchin’.

And the way he whines, “Really?” after John messes up the beginning of “Mr. Moonlight” and stops.

I’m also a fan of In Spite Of All The Danger and That Means A Lot (particularly the chord on “a time” or “a touch.”)

“Boop boop” or whatever it is at the end of Eight Days A Week (It says “Complete Version,” so yeah, that version)

George imitating  the bass in Something (after “I don’t know, I don’t know”).

Also known as Egg-Rock, Egg-Roll, E-George, Eggy, Ravioli, Eggroll Eggrolli...

I’ve only listened to the Badfinger version once, but I didn’t like it at all in comparison to Paul’s demo either. As far as I can recall it’s a bit faster, and it doesn’t carry any of the bass-and-piano “oomph” of the Macca version. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Come And Get It would have made a marvellous slot on Abbey Road instead of Maxwell, or alternatively would have been an even better first single for Paul to release from the McCartney album.

Also, the Badfinger singers were nowhere in Paul’s league, though in their own right they’re not bad.

I agree that the voice of Tom Evans was not exactly like Paul’s. However, I maintain that musically, the versions are very similar. At least the producer of the song (some dude named Sir Paul something or other) insisted that it be done so. I just read in “Many Years From Now” that Paul insisted it be done note for note or else Badfinger could not have the song. I will have to go back and find the exact quote from the book, but in the meantime here is an exerpt from W-pedia:

On 2 August 1969, McCartney presented his demo to Apple band Badfinger (then called The Iveys) telling them, “Okay, it’s got to be exactly like this demo.” His “carrot” for the band was his offer to produce this song and two other Iveys originals for the movie The Magic Christian, since he had a contract to supply three songs for it. The band followed his instructions.[2]

McCartney auditioned each of the four Iveys to sing lead on “Come And Get It “. Ultimately, he picked fellow Liverpudlian Tom Evans over the three Welshmen, Pete Ham, Ron Griffiths, and Mike Gibbins.

I had to return my copy to the library, but the quote’s available at Google Books (hopefully that link works). I didn’t interpret it as Paul saying they couldn’t have the song if they didn’t do the same arrangement, but he did insist they keep it the same and guaranteed it would be a hit.

Thanks for the link, parlance. mal-evans

From the book: “Paul produced the record on 2 August at Abbey Road , making sure they followed his arrangement note for note, and sure enough it made number one in America.”

It still is interesting that someone would like one version over the other even though they are practically the same. I say interesting, not in a derogatory way, but rather because not everyone hears the same songs the same way. There is another thread in this Forum that bears out that point.

To be fair to Paul he was right as the song reached #7 in the US, #4 in the UK, and is a good song – tho the demo is far better.

George’s 3 demos from the 25th February (Something , All Things Must Pass , Old Brown Shoe ) are stunning. All different from the finished versions but in some ways just as good.

My top choices are “Whats the New Mary Jane” and “Leave My Kitten Alone ” because they were both recorded on my birthday: August 14 (clearly not year, but day/month) and they’re both very me hahaha. This was also the day that the radio station in Dallas (where I was born) that told people to burn their Beatles gear got stuck by lightning in 1966. I have a cool Beatles-birthday.

Other favorites are “The Fool On The Hill (Take 4) I really enjoy how stripped down it is,

the slower “Helter Skelter ” is great I think.

I definitely prefer the Anthology’s version of “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da ” those bongos and acoustic guitars make the song for me and Paul’s bass does some funky stuff if I’m remembering right.

The early “Got To Get You Into My Life ” is pretty crazy, like that one a lot. The “somehow, some way” bit is a little weird, but I love that organ.

I absolutely love “If You’ve Got Trouble ” and “Real Love ” too.

I even like the Dehradun bit that George sang on Anthology. It might’ve been written while in India considering Dehradun is in India.

I was curious to know more about the song so I looked it up and had a listen.

I really, really like it!

Thanks @Ahhh Girl :)))

Yes, the song is really good. George’s obsession with India is really endearing 😛

I must confess I was busy having 4 kids in less than 5 years in the 90s, got quite sick in the first decade of this century, and finally discovered Anthology in 2012. OMG what a revelation! I like the insight it gives into the biz, especially how the lyrics and arrangements often evolve simultaneously.

Let me try to pick some things out…I probably listened to the whole set 20 times in a row when I got them, I really really love it.

Like many of you I absolutely love In Spite Of All The Danger – it’s SO great that that recording was so well preserved and will now be until…about the end of the humanity, and even longer if some extraterrestrial species discovers it.

and hate the take of Tomorrow Never Knows

John’s gobbledegook in Maxwell’s Silver Hammer – it’s like the verse he does in one take of Don’t Let Me Down from the rooftop – if you don’t listen for it you don’t even realize it’s nonsense! His vocal abilities were truly amazing. I’ll never forget the look on my son’s face when I played it for him – he cocked his head in this odd way that looked like his neck was double-jointed 🙂 (Another of my Johh faves is the chirpy “Nehhh” sound after “1822” on BBC)

The takes of Strawberry Fields Forever , especially the demo – John’s voice could be so precious unadulterated. I must say I’m glad they didn’t use the outtro from take 7, the slapping is annoying (or any part of the “suitable ending” of Penny Lane )

Like @Zig, ADITL gives me chills (listening to it right now 🙂 John’s verses are imo better than the released version – ranking with the released version of Mother among the best vocal work of his career, at least for raw angst. But unlike Mother , it’s straight (at least I can’t hear any effects).

The goofy “Uh-Huhs” in Sheik of Araby (which is otherwise not one of my favorite songs)

She Said She Said (John’s goofs, like the one in my sig)

WMGGW

Mother Nature’s Son

The vocal tracks iso from Because

Ringo always introducing George’s solos on his songs – really shows their comraderie

Agreed that some of the edits are worse than stupid. We’re fanatics, we (generally) want unadulterated stuff!

Half of what I say is meaningless...

Was it George who sang the aaahhhaaaa on In Spite Of All The Danger ? He just sounds so so so young on it. It’s really amazing.

Forever whatever reason, I like it that we have only one recording of it. It’s like a sign of the things that were to come.

A few things @Matt Busby (I’m the guy who when in music shops organises the Beatles section a-hard-days-night-paul-7).

Its Paul on ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer ‘ doing all that nonsensical vocaling, John doesn’t appear on the track.

The third Anthology version of ‘Strawberry Fields’ is Take 7 (RM3) with edit piece take 24 flown in. Take 7 RM3 has been booted au naturale.

‘She Said, She Said’ isnt on ‘Anthology’.

Thanks mmm (I’m the guy who gets mixed up frequently – I have a bad habit of composing long posts after sitting at the keyboard for hours straight – and I have so much to learn still, there is so much music and within that, so much Beatles – tg 🙂

I knew it was Paul who sang Maxwell’s, I think I even knew it as a kid, but I had John’s vocal antics such in my head that I got confused. Not when I posted, but when I played it for my son. And it’s been misfiled since then (last fall)…

The version of She Said that I was thinking on is from a fragment on a boot I have called Anthology 2000…on my car stereo the “2000” doesn’t display – in fact the whole word “Anthology” doesn’t display – and of course, I didn’t check it on my real copy before I posted. I listen to the older live mono stuff in the car more because when the stereo works, it’s usually only one speaker 🙁 Got to get that fixed asap…the stereo is less than 2 years old, the cheapest Alpine model. I’m hoping it’s a power connection problem, because it acts like one…and the right speaker does work, it’s definitely a loose connection, so when I get some money I hope to get them both fixed.

Again, thanks…only two errors (that I’ll own up to) – not bad, and blame the third on the spoiler which did not spoiled it at all – just dropped it into the category of “stupid edits” 😉

I think it is…and I’m not sure who else it could be, as the harmony is surely Paul. It is amazing, but there’s a good reason he sounds so so young, I believe he was all of 15 😉 Joe’s write-up lists the three of them as singing, and Paul is surely the harmonist. I love the American country accents.

Tg John Lowe had the foresight to save it. From the write-up, you’d think Paul felt cheated by his initial 5,000 BP offer being turned down…whatever the amount was, I’m sure it’s been a worthwhile investment!

There are a couple versions of Paul doing it out on youtube, if you didn’t know (but you probably did).

I really like the early take of “Tomorrow Never Knows ” but i seem to be in a minority on that one.

generally the 2nd one is the best by far for me, the beatles were such good judges of their own material and the best takes it’s frightening – as much as its entertaining to hear not much on the sets would replace the official versions. The one exception for me is “im looking through you” i think paul made a mistake not going with the earlier version which is much funkier with a latin beat and some bluesy soloing. It’s just knocks me out.

I really like take 1 of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows ‘; the little bit of speech by George Martin (“here it comes, stand by”) at the beginning is so cool – like a heads-up to all the listeners that it’s about to get so damn fucking weird just before the loops begin. Of course they then went even more off the wall with the final version, which is better and they were right to go with.

Its also brilliant to have a track so vastly different from the released recording. Those are the highlight of the ‘Anthology’ series for – ‘And I Love Her ‘, ‘I’m Looking Through You ‘, ‘Got To Get You Into My Life ‘ etc when you don’t have to spend ten minutes trying to figure out how its different. I know why Apple didnt but we should have gotten the rocked up ‘Two of Us’ from Twickenham.
