Who made the decisions to issue some takes, but not others? If I were in charge, I’d simply release ALL the takes and let the public sift through it.
Ultimately, I think Paul, George, Ringo and Yoko (for John’s estate) made these decisions regarding Anthology – with input from others.

Do you mean at the time (when the Beatles were recording) or do you mean for the Anthology?

Paul, Ringo, George, Yoko had final approval with George M going thru the tapes with a team putting together their preferences and recommendations of what they felt was best for release (historical importance, interesting etc). Details of early line-ups and ultimately rejected tracks were reported at the time as well as further information coming to light over the following years.
The albums were compiled to appeal to both casual and hardcore fans which is why there are recreated outtakes (e.g. ‘ADITL) and some tracks were ultimately rejected and George is known to have personally edited ‘YKMN (LUTN)’. I think all of them also didn’t see the value in a lot of what is in the vault, scraping the barrel etc. Even now we aren’t seeing the vaults being thrown open for the Deluxe sets; Apple are in it for the money and it’s far more lucrative drip feeding us than throwing it all out there. Compare Dylan’s ongoing Bootleg series to what Apple are releasing.

I still don’t see any sensible rationale for excluding anything. You can issue two piles:
1) Selected recordings (as they did)
2) Everything.
#2 isn’t going to somehow threaten #1 in any way conceivable. It’s just going to exist as available.
I can see a rationale for rejecting ONLY #2, but not both 1 and 2.

YES
I mean, normally, I’m the sort of person who thinks that whatever was on the record was what was intended by the divine Beatles and therefore right.
But this is a huge exception to that– maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for acoustic ballads and demo-y things, but this version of WMGGW is just so much… better. In fact I never truly appreciated what a great song it was till I heard the acoustic version (shoot me– I don’t like the WA version much– it’s not gently weeping enough for me, more like loudly wailing).

I’ll have a listen to the Anthology version soon and hear for myself. One thing about the WA version is that musically to me it seems unusual for its time in terms of this kind of driven focused rhythmic energy; I can’t think of a pop-rock song of that era (late 60s) sounding like that, but I can think of many from later in the 70s (and beyond).

Not on an Anthology album but the Real Love single – that version of Yellow Submarine with the extended intro and extra submarine noises is far superior
And I much prefer the version of Ob-La-Di,Ob-La-Da from Ultra Rare Trax Vol. 3 that somehow didn’t make the Anthology series – anyone know which take it is?

It’s the same take (take 5) but a difference mix.
The raw studio tape of this take begins with a snippet of John rehearsing his falsetto vocal, followed by Paul’s count-in. It concludes with George Martin’s gleeful comment “That’s it, you’ve done it!” A version prepared by Geoff Emerick for Sessions omits the studio chat, replaces the 1st chorus with a spliced-in later chorus, and is mixed in pseudostereo at best. Its ending originally cross-faded with a reprise of “Christmas Time (Is Here Again)” When this mix was eventually released on Anthology 3 , the song’s ending was left intact and some goofy dialogue from John was appended to the start and 1nish. These exclamations (“Yes sah! Take one, and de Magic Jumbo Band!;” “Oobladi-blada, brutha!”) may come from a later session.

Nice. I would suggest midway in the song, after the “you’re asking me will our love grow” part, then switch to the standard version for the guitar solo and keep that version to the end. But hey, it’s your wedding!

But I love the Anthology version’s bridge “You know I love that woman o’ mine…” which I think is in the same gap as the solo.

You could still make the switch — just begin right after George sings “…make me blue” at the end of that part, then switch to the guitar solo and end the song with the mainstream version of the last few lines?

Yeah. I think I prefer the complete ‘everything thrown in’ mix to what we got.
The ‘Real Love ‘ EP is awesome. I adore John’s intro to ‘Baby’s In Black ‘ (which I think is different to what is on the Hollywood Bowl album) as it’s so carefree as he fills time whilst Paul gets ready. And to complete the set, ‘HT&E’ has a beautiful Paul vocal which sounds so gentle and vulnerable (it’s different at the end on the ‘Revolver ‘ deluxe so any completest would need both).
When Apple reissue the ‘Anthology’ series I do hope that at the very least they go back and add the outtakes on the ‘FAAB’ and ‘RL’ as bonus tracks.
I’m off topic.
