Album comprised of Beatles weakest songs

So – I don’t know if this topic has been covered before – if so, accept my apologies.

But what would an album made up of what are generally considered the Beatles’ weakest songs look like?

For instance, there’s a lot of agreement that Mr. Moonlight is a weak tune (OK I know some folks love it – I’m not saying it’s universally hated) but songs like that are for the most part considered weak.

Can anyone come up with a 12 to 14 track LP like that?

If so have at it.

For $hits and giggles here’s my “Greatest Flops“,  I would put  in LP order:

1) Anna (Go To Him)

2) Till There Was You ( I always cringe when I hear this) paul-mccartney

3) I’m Happy Just To Dance With You

4) Honey Don’t

5) You Like Me Too Much

6) Revolution 9

7) Good Night

8) Honey Pie

9) All Together Now

10)  Her Majesty

11) Maggie Mae

* As you can see, it was hard for me to pick a bad song from Rubber Soul (UK version), right up to Magical Mystery Tour , but surely some will disagree!

Should they be songs that are generally less tan memorable, or can they be songs we simply dislike? Because Revolution 9 would be a song I dislike, but I don’t know if it classifies as weak, since it’s so memorable.

@Bongo Seriously? Till There Was You is one of my favourites…!

No surprise from me that I’d throw  ‘Hold Me Tight ‘ in immediately. Others that can get added would be the Kansas City medley, ‘Eight Days A Week ‘, ‘A Taste Of Honey ‘, ‘Bungalow Bill’ and as we need another well known song I’ll throw in ‘Nowhere Man ‘. Never had any fondness for those.

Good Night ‘ would be the album closer’.

That would be one side.

A good topic but from it already I’ve learned that I’d buy any of those albums……..Everyone of them contains more than a few jewels. That’s how good the Lads were. Remember in the days of one-hit-wonders the rest of whole albums were fillers.

A word on behalf of ‘True Love’…er I mean ‘Goodnight’

The White Album had just about every style covered……….Together they and George Martin completed the collection and had schmaltz down here. I’m of the personal opinion that John went along with it for the contrast it showed following as it does R9. GD is not to my taste either but I bet it sounded better naked. Just strum the chords to yourself.

The only songs I don’t have time for are ‘Long Long Long’………Yawwwwwnnn! R9!!…….Maggie May…..(even though she’s my aunty), Wild HP and about 4 of Ringo’s.

Guess I’m fussy!

Some nice acoustic guitar in ‘Long Long Long’……..Just I find it too Lonnnnnnnnng even though it isn’t…….Turgid might be the word I’d use.

I find myself thinking if there was a bus I could catch to the end of this song I’d hop on.

Hold your head up and don’t hate me too much for it Silly Girl…..I love Martha My Dear !!

And I’ve thanked you…… so that sort of cancels my one out…… and I promise you consider I myself un-thanked. 5555!

“Turgid”‘s a good word, and one I wouldn’t’ve thought to use. My biggest problem is the song’s lyrics are so bland.

I like the song (especially the spookiness in the coda), just don’t love it as much as most.

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

1. Thank You Girl (Shudders.)
2. Chains (The intro physically hurts me. I can enjoy the song once I get past that but it’s hard to ignore.)
3. Little Child (Even if I enjoy it it’s probably the worst on the album.)
4. Words Of Love (They sound like singing the song is killing them, although the original seems to be sung in a similar fashion.)
5. Yes It Is (Not bad, just weak.)
6. Dizzy Miss Lizzy (I enjoy this separate from any album, but it doesn’t fit in context following Yesterday and all.
7. Wild Honey Pie (Oh yeah, that.)
8. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill (…in comparison to the rest of The White One.)
9. Don’t Pass Me By (It’s grown on me, but as I said above…)
10. Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? (I love this song… but it’s still weak.)
11. Revolution 9 (Even though I can enjoy it now, it doesn’t do much for most people.)
12. Good Night (I usually love all Ringo songs, but same as 9. Just not a strong song.)
13. All Together Now (…even with its profound lyrics.)
14. Her Majesty (Only for length. It matters. ahdn_george_06)

And that’s an average Beatles album length!

I sound strangely critical. But this is for the ‘weakest songs’.

OH! Almost forgot the weakest! Strawberry Fiel– Nope. I was gonna make that joke but then I realized it was blasphemy. beatlemaniacs_02_gif

One off each album.  But, for instance, I regard most of them as better than Boys , but I already selected Anna off that album.  Basis for inclusion in brackets, redeeming features – if any – in square brackets)

Anna (turgid mess)

Hold Me Tight (has no idea where it’s going)

When I Get Home (poorest song on AHDN )

Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby (sorry, George)

Dizzy Miss Lizzy (tinny and awful)

Think For Yourself (sorry, George)[intelligent lyric]

Dr Robert (2nd worst song on Revolver – I wanted to spare George over I Want To Tell You )[good arrangement with lovely vocals in bridge]

Lovely Rita (weakest song on Pepper)[but not bad]

Blue Jay Way (sorry, George)[interesting arrangement, just not very enjoyable]

Glass Onion (self-indulgent tripe)

Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey (see Glass Onion )

It’s Only A Northern Song (sorry, George)[good idea, horrible to listen to]

I Want You (She’s So Heavy) (see Glass Onion )[some very nice playing in it]

Dig A Pony (tripe which doesn’t even have the virtue of self-indulgence)[great group performance]

Some good efforts by @vectisfabber and @Mr. Kite, here are mine off each album:

  1. Baby It’s You . As a showcase its superfluous considering we’ve had A Taste Of Honey and Anna
  2. Devil In Her Heart . Reluctantly, but it’s more of the same kind of thing, I would have preferred another original.
  3. When I Get Home . First original to get it. Weak spot in a very strong album.
  4. Eight Days A Week . Worst potential single, and really worse than the decent job they did of the covers on this album.
  5. Tell Me What You See . Also a forced effort, the middle-eight is pretty lazy, and a backward step.
  6. Wait . Despite the novel lyric, it’s also a backwards step songwriting-wise.
  7. Doctor Robert . I think they should have given this another go, the rhythm is confused in the verses.
  8. When I’m Sixty-Four . I’m reasonably certain that had Lennon and Harrison put more input, this would be gone.
  9. All Together Now . This was a contractual obligation, not an artistic effort.
  10. Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? Great singing, but superfluous. There are a few more if you wanted to fill up time, of course.
  11. Oh! Darling . Again, nothing really different about this song. Even Maxwell’s Silver Hammer has the Moog, great guitar, and a sound-effect.
  12. Get Back . It’s already a single, the differences aren’t enough in my opinion to justify its inclusion. Although Dig It and Maggie Mae are largely pointless, they fit the concept of the album in the same way the pointless songs on The Beatles are.

Picking one song an album is a good test IMHO because you don’t get to play games with song length, but that list only gets me to 28:30, hence the easy option of docking Revolution 9 which is a whopping 8:23 which some lists have taken, and some have even gone to the lengths of pulling in B-sides (looking at you @Necko!).

That’s wasn’t my list.  I based that off that one ranking thing we did.  I don’t really want to choose my own songs.

Also, I failed to read that we were supposed to choose twelve to fourteen songs, so I just added the songs up to twenty-six minute per side on vinyl and eighty minutes per disc on CD.

I think this would be a horrible album, and a horrible running order.

The big surprise for me on this board is how many people dislike ‘The Long And Winding Road ‘………I think it’s one of the best melodies he ever came up with……Better in my opinion than Yesterday ……Let it Be……  even rivaling Hey Jude .

If this album above had been released………I would have bought it for that track alone…….If I’d had the ‘sausage’.

When I was a kid I played football for my school team in France and was delighted to discover they had released TLAWR as a single………I couldn’t afford to buy the Album but wanted this song………Unfortunately I couldn’t even afford to buy the single on that holiday……But I separated from the other lads a few time to go and listen to it in the record shops………

I’m reckoning that no one could come up with a ‘worst of’ album that we would all agree with.

I don’t dislike The Long And Winding Road at all. I just feel it could have been better, and it’s not one of McCartney’s best songs. Also, I felt my list was starting to contain a lot of George songs, so I only felt it fair to be more critical of Paul too.

I’ve read lots elsewhere on here that’s critical of this song………Just down to taste…….And many share it. ??
