Did George have any more acceptable material pre-revolver that was recordable aside from You Know What To Do? Ringo was also writing back then just mostly rehashed country stuff, it took almost 4 years for Dont Pass Me By to be accepted. A lot of John and Paul songs were either dumped on other artists or completely forgotten because they weren’t up to scratch.
Im not saying that George got much of a help from John and Paul when developing as a songwriter but lack of quality material might have been as big a reason as any for only 2 songs on Help ! and Rubber Soul but he was only 2 behind John or Paul on Revolver , every one just adds it up that johnandpaul got 10. Neither am i saying George didnt deserve more space later on as what he was trying to get recorded was every bit as worth as what the other 2 offered, if not better.

Well, it (presumably) stands to reason that if he started getting into songwriting a year or two earlier he’d have had a few more songs to submit from ’64-’67. Then he reached his most prolific songwriting period from ’68-’70 yet STILL couldn’t get more than his standard 1-song-per-album-side.

Offline Apparently Matchbox was intended to be on AHDN , never knew that, but just happened to be reading the piece on Matchbox as it was song of the day.
”In June 1964 the group were considering which songs to record for their third long player, A Hard Day’s Night. Matchbox was intended to be Ringo’s feature on the album, but was later deemed surplus to requirements and so it appeared on the Long Tall Sally EP.”
I must say it wouldn’t have fitted in on AHDN anyway. Doesn’t really go well with the rest imo.

John: Because you already chose the title of the album. That’s enough participation!

Offline Apparently it had been written long before that. The article on the song says it was written even before Hamburg. It was indeed held off AHDN due to it’s similarity to You Can’t Do That . So that doesn’t necessarily mean it was intended to be the 14th song, right? Am I the only one who thinks it’s funny that they obviously had enough songs but still only put 13 songs on the album?

Offline I’d never thought about this…I can also hear Ringo doing I’ll Cry Instead ….as it stands, the album seems to lack a proper ending, so I would have picked No Reply to close it.

Interesting choice – but then 13 is my lucky number so it’s nice to have one of their albums with that number of songs on it

But this limitation, and the frustration it caused, probably lead to George’s songwriting improving. He had so few songs an album he needed to make them perfect, couldn’t write a filler song. Abbey Road just shows how he mastered that limitation with two near-perfect songs probably the best on the album.

Offline Was reading the June 1964 edition of ‘The Beatles Book Monthly’ and on page 15 it’s written “Incidentally, George has had another stab at composing . . . and his song will probably be on the album, though it is not in the film” (you can see it in the image attached). Presumably this would have been ‘You’ll Know What To Do’ and it was rejected more to give Ringo his cut, which never happened due to being taken ill, or just down to not feeling it was ready or good enough yet for a Beatle album.
Am going chronologically thru the books so will be interesting if its picked up on in future editions or is never mentioned again.

I always forget that Ringo doesn’t have a song on this album. I agree with mmm that it would have to be a Lennon-McCartney song that Ringo sings, not a cover.

Offline I read something recently suggesting that “I’ll Be Back ” was at least partially written at the time and would have been the 14th track had Ringo’s tonsils not interfered.
Unfortunately I’m traveling yet again this week without any books so will have to wait to find the reference – which may be speculative in any case but…well it’s something anyway.
