I was thinking about that this morning. This is going a bit off-topic but whatever.
Sun King is very Fleetwood Mac. The guitar work in Don’t Let Me Down sounds very Hendrix-y (Wind Cries Mary), and Lennon’s voice in that song sounds like nothing else he recorded (listen to “Ooh she done me/She done me gooood” – can anyone tell me who he’s trying to sound like? Dylan?). We all know he lost his mojo towards the end, but it’s interesting how some of his late-Beatles music was quite derivative of his contemporaries. It’s like his early and late music was heavily inspired by other people, and only in the middle stage was his songwriting truly original.

I was listening to Abbey Road (twice) last night and Sun King actually made me think more of Pink Floyd around the time of Meddle.  I wonder if the Beatles were an influence on them like the Mac were on this track (or am I just hearing things that aren’t there)?

Whole songs and scraps of songs linked together….Some better than others……..Are we talking about Paul’s favorite song on the White Album ……….’Happiness Is A Warm Gun ‘??

I know we ‘re not…… but credit where it’s due.

Maybe on HIAWG John was thinking of ‘Autumn Almanac’ or ‘A Day In The Life ‘………..Or just didn’t have a whole song..Whatever, the medley owes something to ‘Happiness……….’

Ditto. Both those songs now remind me of a short trip I went on with my family to the Pyrenees in France a few months ago. We were hiking and my backpack got really really heavy. Carry That Weight got stuck in my head for an hour. When we went back to the hotel I was tired out and listened to the medley. Golden Slumbers was fitting, even the “get back homeward” part. When I returned home I got back to where I once belonged…

Awesome story.  GS always makes me think of my childhood home.

How old do you picture Mean Mr Mustard and Polythene Pam to be?

Slightly off topic to the running conversation here but I don’t like the medley. Well, the order it’s in, anyway. I’d get rid of a few songs and it’d end up like this –

Golden Slumbers

Carry That Weight

The End

Her Majesty

Polythene Pam

(Then because just for the hell of it, I’d put Get Back to finish it all off.)

"White Album - My joint-fave Beatles album along with Revolver. They show the two sides of Beatles. Revolver's very controlled - even though it's also very innovative. The White Album's playful and almost ramshackle. It's like a scrapbook kept by a genius. Fantastic stuff."

Blech. That would totally not be nearly as good. Where’s You Never Give Your Money? That’s essential.

I picture Mean Mr Mustard middle aged with a large grey unkempt beard, and Polythene Pam younger, but not by too much because they’re siblings, so 30’s at the youngest.

I’ve always seen it the other way around, PP being the good older sister looking after her slightly autistic, socially awkward younger brother. A couple of years between them, and probably in their 30s at the time of the songs.

M3 reminded me of this earlier, but I think that this is the best thing they did. I mean, taking 9 songs and connecting them in such a awesomely creative way was masterful. I have to say, however, that John’s songs were not great (no, Because isn’t in my ‘John songs’ thing. That’s great.) and really, Mustard, Pam, and Bathroom Window are comedic relief. The true mastery of the medley comes from Paul. You Never Give Me Your Money is a suite, a suite that is, of all time, tied for #1. This is the best, nay, the only, opener. The subtle chord to Sun King , and then the majesticness of that. Following Bathroom Window, Golden Slumbers was, is, and will remain, my favourite part of this medley. Its soft beauty, the elegance and the beauty of the melody are haunting. Carry That Weight is great, especially the reprise of the YNGMYM guitar, and then The End . I needn’t go into that. And Her Majesty is also nice, even if to far away from The End for my liking. So, what are your favourites? (I hope I don’t get any snarky I hate it comments *cough*Zig, M3*cough*, but I seriously doubt anyone dislikes it.

I think this is the best thing anyone did – it is still just completely awesome nowadays.  I don’t agree that Paul’s are the best bits – I think the work he did putting it all together might be – but all the snippets add value.

So we are going to say that the Pam in the Mustard song is Polythene Pam . There aren’t two different Pams. The Beatles call Mustard *old* in addition to being dirty and mean. Would The Beatles think that 30-something was “old”? Or is the *old* just a catch-phrase? Ooops, some over analysis going on in my head. I wonder what @Bungalow Bob would say to this question?

Also, @Mr. Kite , I guess if Mustard shaves in the dark, he misses his face and thus still has a large unkempt beard.

EDIT: I just read Joe’s page on Mean Mr Mustard . He has this quote from John.

In Mean Mr Mustard I said ‘his sister Pam’ – originally it was ‘his sister Shirley’ in the lyric. I changed it to Pam to make it sound like it had something to do with it [Polythene Pam].

Yes I definitely see them as siblings, and the old is part of the reason I imagine him older, just not too old because I don’t see Pam that old, however, old could just be a phrase that fit the lyric.

I think of Pam as young and Mustard as old and their dad had a child with another wife when Mustard was 30

You can see the progression because in the Anthology Mean Mr Mustard ‘s sister is Shirley. I think he changed it to fit in the medley. Maybe Paul said he should? Seems like a Paul thing to do.

Has anyone tried Googling this Mustard guy, to see how old he really is? He can’t be that hard to find. Let’s see, he sleeps in a hole in the road; that means he could very well live in Blackburn, Lancashire. There are ten thousand holes there, and a few parks, so that narrows our search somewhat. Pam’s shop might be located just off the park, so she can keep an eye on her eccentric older brother. And Pam must be fairly young, because she’s the “kind of a girl that makes the “News of The World.” And surely the “News Of The World” has to compete with the Page 3 models of the Sun. Although, probably none of the Page 3 girls have ever posed in jackboots, a kilt and a polythene bag. That’s an unforgettable get-up, so somebody must be familiar with this brother/sister act.
