There have been a few similar edits on YouTube but they get taken down fairly regularly.

Come Together and Oh! Darling are up there, and the medley. John could never have sung OD, it’s a heartbreaking and personal sort of song. Sorry, I’ve just never rated Something as being the best Beatles love song and can’t help thinking it was because Frank Sinatra said so. I have trouble with the lyrics in the bridge: “you stick around and it may show” – possibly the most unromantic line in a love song ever and just seems so out of sync with the rest of the verses.

I think he could’ve easily sung it, especially if we’re talking about no nonsense John (Twist And Shout , Dizzy Miss Lizzy , etc). The Anthology version features John, but they’re more goofing around, and John’s voice is more harmonising and not rocking out. In any case, Paul wrote the song and I think it was fair he sang it.

It’s interesting that whenever the few occasions that I’ve witnessed other people covering this song onstage that it sounds more like John’s vision (for lack of a better word) than the standard ‘Abbey Road ‘ version…  probably because few can match Paul’s riveting vocal performance here…  there were stories that he’d come into work early everyday for a week to scream himself hoarse before attempting to record it…  shades of ‘Maybe I’m Amazed ‘ which appeared only months later and, dare I say, Lennon’s own dabbling with Primal Scream Therapy…:-)

Paul did a great job with the song, and because of the passage of time, I can’t imagine anyone else singing it. It has always been his. I really love it. It’s a song you can really get into, especially with the ending refrain.

Abbey Road RANKING

Well, this is my first ranking of Beatles songs. So I hope you’ll enjoy.

I think Abbey Road is an incredible album. Although, I’m not the biggest fan of the medley. I still think this album contains some of the best Beatles material ever and is definitely the perfect finale album. Screw Let It Be ! Without further ado, here’s the ranking…

17- Sun King (This is one of the few Beatles songs I really don’t like. It’s just too slow for me. I get bored with this song by the first few seconds. Besides, the song feels super repetitive even within the album. It rips off the lyrics of “Here Comes The Sun ” and literally steals the tripled-harmonies from “Because ”. Plus, half of the lyrics are literal gibberish.)

16- Because (Again, not a big fan of super slow songs. And the harmonies don’t do it for me. Don’t get me wrong I love me some good Beatles harmonies. But this one was just not interesting. One of the very, VERY rare cases where I prefer the Across The Universe cover over the original.)

15- Her Majesty (The song is not bad. But it’s literally only 20 seconds.)

14- Mean Mr. Mustard (Not a big fan of the instrumentation on this one. I would probably dislike this song more if it was longer. But I think it’s the right amount of length without the beat getting too annoying or repetitive.)

13- She Came In Through The Bathroom Window (Honestly, the only memorable part about the song is its title. It’s not a bad song but nothing special. I could see this working if it was longer. But as for me, it simply goes by without leaving much of an impact.)

12- Polythene Pam (I like the music behind this number. Very rocking. Love the slamming drums and rock riff and Lennon’s coarse vocals. Definitely a standout from the medley. I also think the transition between Pam and Bathroom Window is the best in the whole medley.)

11- You Never Give Me Your Money (The Side 2 Medley starts out with a memorable track. In a way, it’s a medley of songs to begin with in a similar vein to Happiness Is A Warm Gun . The “out of college, money spent” part is my personal favorite part. Not one of my favorite Beatles songs but definitely a highlight of the medley.)

10- Oh! Darling (It would be interesting to hear how John Lennon would’ve sounded on this song. But I definitely think Paul’s rough vocals are one of the strong points of this song. I do think the song goes on a little too long and gets a little repetitive for my tastes. But I do enjoy giving this song a listen from time to time. Hearing Paul ripping his vocal chords never gets old.)

9/8/7- Golden Slumbers /Carry That Weight /The End (My favorite part of the entire medley. I couldn’t rank these three individually. I like listening to them all in one go. Golden Slumbers is the soft opening to the medley with beautiful vocals and lyrics from Paul. The scene from the Simpsons really made me appreciate the lullaby-like instrumentation of it. Carry That Weight is louder and more abrasive with all the Beatles singing along which I just love. Plus, it gives a wonderful callback to YNGMYM which I just love. And then, THE END! What a way to end an album. Ringo’s drum solo. The battling guitars from Paul, John, and George. And the final lyrics, “The love you take is equal to the love you make.” An iconic ending to the Beatles saga. You can tell this the Beatles saying goodbye. And the main reason I consider Abbey Road the true finale album.)

6- Maxwell’s Silver Hammer (I will admit this isn’t the greatest Beatles song. I can definitely see why people find this track annoying. This is Paul at his most Paul. Still I’m a big fan of songs with lyrical dissonance. So I enjoy the heck out of a cheerful ditty about a serial killer. Plus love “Silver hammer man” ending.)

5- I Want You (She’s So Heavy) (I know it may seem hypocritical of me: complaining about repetitiveness in other songs while rating THIS SONG so high. But DAMN MAN, this song is epic. The guitar jamming along to John’s vocals. The pre-doom rock instrumental. Once, She’s So Heavy kicks in. The track becomes iconic with one-two-three punch of killer guitar, killer bass, and Billy Preston’s killer organ playing. Also, love that abrupt ending. The song may be long but that’s never stopped me from listening to it whole. Still the song’s a bitch to play on Rock Band.)

4- Come Together (I can definitely call this one of the greatest Beatles songs ever made. That opening “shoot me” bit gives me shivers. Everyone is on their a-game. Ringo’s impeccable drumming, Paul’s iconic bassline, George’s strumming guitar, and John’s vocals and bizarre lyrics. Definitely the perfect opener for the album. Not a Top 10 favorite but definitely can’t deny the song’s awesomeness.)

3- Octopus’s Garden (People are gonna crucify me for putting this song over Come Together . But what can I say? I enjoy me a Ringo tune. George Harrison ’s guitar strums really make this song. Also, I love the overall cheerful energy the song exudes. Probably Ringo’s best song he wrote. Which isn’t saying much since he only wrote 2 songs by himself. But still, it feels like an awesome successor to Yellow Submarine and how can you really complain about that, man? Whatever I like what me like.)

2- Something (That bassline is killer. Probably George’s best composition for the Beatles. Sincerely, George Harrison was MVP of this album. Producing two iconic songs. This might be the best love song made by the Beatles. Which is saying something since they made A LOT of love songs? Heck, it might just be the best love song ever written. The “you’re asking me” bridge is the best part, in my opinion. The vocals, the instrumentation, just lovely. What more can be said? It’s iconic for a reason.)

1- Here Comes The Sun (Like I said, George Harrison = MVP of Abbey Road . After the dark sounds of I Want You, Here Comes The Sun opens Side 2 with one of the happiest awesome songs ever made. It’s full of bright energy without going full children’s song like Octopus’s Garden. The music is still complex, the lyrics are incredible. You really feel like George is having the time of his life making this song. Which is nice to hear especially considering how much of a dour sourpuss he was during this time. The use of synths, the strums of the acoustic guitar, the patting of the drums, the “sun, sun, sun, here it comes” bridge, and George’s impeccable singing. There is so much to love about this song. It never gets old. No matter how much it’s played. And it’s definitely my favorite song off the album.)

I did enjoy. And that’s because I think I have the some top 2 and bottom 2 on Abbey Road , because most of the stuff in between I’d also rank the same, because I agree about almost every single point you’re making. Sun King and Because a bit too ponderous? The Medley, except for the ending trilogy, rather low? Pleased with McCartney singing Oh! Darling ? Maxwell’s Silver Hammer a witty ditty? The bridge in Something one of the greates moments ever? It’s all the same for me, that and much more of the things you’ve said. So thank you, now I don’t even need to do a ranking myself! john-lennon-salute_gif
