When I saw the Google result for Hazel Frederick, I literally laughed out loud. She even looks like a Hazel. I know, because that was my grandmother's name. Thanks for making my horrible Monday a bit brighter!

Back on topic, I'd be curious to see the photos Linda took. I'll have to check Google at some point.

Hi

just thought you would be interested to know I have ABEY of the Abbey Road sign on back cover of Beatles album!

I used to live on Abbey Road and near the wall which had the road sign before it was demolished to make way for new estate i only managed to rescue 4 tiles the rest were destroyed they are at auction on 26th Nov 2011 google live auctioneers for link

The end of the sign was NW8 in those days the postal district it was on the junction with Alexandra Road most of which was also demolished…

Ooh, you lucky thing. If I had those I'd never part with them. Well done for rescuing them.

Btw here's the link to the auction.

It wasn't Linda. Actually it was a fan chosen at random who can be seen in a candid photo taken by Linda before the famous crossing session and also in a recently discovered official alternate pose released online a few months back.

Can you provide a link to these photos? I'd really like to see them.

I have a similiar crossing  pose but the girl in the distant background I believed to be the girl we see a bit of on the back of the Abbey Road cover is also in this photo  but apparently was taken by Linda  Bonni Benrubi Gallery – Linda McCartney – The Beatles, Abbey Road, London, 1969    I also did a Wikipedia check then noticed a previous post explaining the unknown girl was never intented to be in the pic just bad timing according to Iian Macmillan  I’ll take a guess that since Paul chose and approved the pic for the front cover, He must have liked the girl in the mini and they decided to go with it.apple01

Was looking around the net and found a new clue in Paul being dead. If you turn the back cover of Abbey Road 90 degrees and look at the lady elbow you can see Pauls image. Why that would mean Paul is dead is another matter entirely? Maybe he became trapped in her elbow.

Damn. Does that mean Paul isnt dead? That the clues were wrong. Noooooooooooooooooooo!

Another clue is that the woman is Jane Asher and thats a clue to Paul being dead somehow. She knew Paul or is walking away from the beatles in disgust or anything else that fits.

There is also a wall! They missed that one.

A clue! A clue!

Reminds me of Life of Brian when they find his sandal and make it into a whole believe system.

“The zebra crossing is no longer there (it was later moved a few yards up the road – not a lot of people know that), but I’d guess it was an electrical outlet/manhole point. It can be seen in one of the out-takes too:

Even though it’s not in the same place, every time I use the crossing I still get a thrill, thinking that I’m walking in The Beatles’ footsteps. I don’t think it would ever get old.”

Hey Joe – judging by the service port in the road which is still there it only likes like they repainted about a foot in length off from the original, otherwise, the light poles and everything else lines up in other recent pics:

Cant remember if this has been posted before but since this thread has been revisited here’s a blog that disputes the idea that the zebra crossing was moved, it has photos for evidence so its not a random thought.

Yes, you’re right – it does seem that the crossing wasn’t moved after all. I’ve seen that link before – it’s quite convincing.

Wog Blog article on the back cover. I couldn’t remember where I’d previously posted updates on his research on the artwork, but this thread is certainly relevant.

This album cover is so important we have a thread for the back and a thread for the front.

There’s more talk about the crossing not being moved on the other thread.

The back cover photograph for the Abbey Road album was taken by Iain Macmillan on 8th August 1969, soon after he took of the front cover:

Image Enlarger

The finished back cover was designed by John Kosh of Apple Records:

The street sign was located at the corner of Abbey Road and Alexandra Road. The street signs and walls were demolished in the early 70s:

Comparing the picture above with the cover shows that the blurred person caught walking past was in fact crossing Abbey Road   diagonally towards the corner of Alexandra Road.

These two unidentified fans were photographed at the street sign. Could the woman be the same person pictured on the back cover?

I’m not sure. Doesn’t look like she’s wearing that blue skirt.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

There is not enough evidence to connect  the two women. Different clothes, plus the girl on the back cover of Abbey Road is blurred, making it nearly impossible to identify her or match her to another girl.

Unless I’ve missed it above……..No one has mentioned the ‘spectral skull’……..stretched like a Rubber Soul photo.

Supposedly, the girl walking through was happenstance. Perhaps, but I have always thought she was on purpose because it makes the album name more obviously the focus of the picture.  After all, they wouldn’t want people calling it Abbey Road NW8.  My father was a photographer (not THE photographer, sadly) and, while happy accidents occasionally happen, it was much more likely that he would stage something for framing or to complete a photograph in a desired way.

And a powerhouse as big as EMI could easily have had the city’s fab shop make a sign of the group’s name and had the S cracked in the appropriate way.

Yes, I'm livin' in hope

Perhaps everything you want to know about the cover (back and front) is posted here:

http://wogew.blogspot.com/p/ab…..rever.html

Also, photo evidence that the crossing hasn’t moved although the street furniture has changed with the times.

Loads of interesting ancillary photo’s taken by Mal and Linda as well.

When you see beyond yourself then you may find peace of mind is waiting there
