But.. I was sitting on the bus back from school today, listening to Rubber Soul
and Revolver
in stereo on my headset. And I can hear Ringos drumming clearly at the left earplug.. and I must say, it sounds really bad at some songs.

…Masters
sounds better in mono, but some of the tracks were stereo only so they are not on the mono version.

There is nothing wrong with the post above...

The cheapest and less confusing way to go about it is the get the 2009 stereo box set.  It has every song (but not every version) you need to start out as a beginner and then you can borrow the other box sets from friends or

…so I tried again and found the magical? settings. On the TV screen, at the bottom of the track listings are 3 audio playback options, PCM Stereo and 2 different 5.1 options. When these are selected (highlighted) you can hear more separation but not much as I don't think they went far

…to the front right, bass moreso to the front left and .1 (subwoofer), lead vocals more to the back/left, etc but it just sounds like another stereo mix. Very disappointing so far. Is there a special setting I need to choose on my Onkyo? There are many settings available but I just don't notice…

…as I play surround sound bluray movies and can clearly hear separate sounds in the 7 speakers (Atmos) on lots of bluray movies but only hearing stereo so far with the Beatles 5.1. If they didn't really separate things significantly when creating this 5.1, then why did they bother to do it at all…

…?. If the separation isn't obvious, I'll return it to Amazon in a heartbeat as the cost is way up there for just another stereo mix.

I have my own home recording studio and can make 5.1 mixes with each instrument/voice panned wherever I want it and was looking for this

…wearing the same uniform image of the Beatles gets used so often. I get that was their breakout, and it’s iconic, but were so much more than that stereotype. I love the early years, but I prefer the longer haired experimenting Beatles!

The mono UK albums are what the band originally intended up until The Beatles (AKA The White Album
) where the band focused on both the mono and stereo equally and for the remaining albums, where they were only made in stereo. So if you want to hear them as The Beatles originally intended, i…

…recommend checking out The Beatles In Mono box set (AKA the 2009 mono remasters) plus the 2009 stereo remasters Abbey Road
and Let It Be
, which were only released in stereo.

As for what i personally prefer, i really like The Beatles (The…

…Original Studio Recordings) (AKA the 2009 stereo remasters) since that's what i'm used to hearing with a few exceptions:

For their first 2 albums, i prefer the 2009 mono remasters since they…

…and I Feel Fine
, which are much better tracks then the ones left off. As for what mix is best for these albums, i'd go with mono for the former and stereo for the latter, both from The Capitol Albums Volume 1.

For their singles, i prefer Mono Masters over Past Masters
since unlike the album tracks,…

… the single tracks weren't mixed to stereo until much later and also, the mono version includes the 4 new tracks from Yellow Submarine
which means that you don't have to buy that album if you…

…have Mono Masters.

Here's a list for you:

As for what versions are on Spotify, those are the 2009 stereo remasters.

…year and they are now easily one of my favorite bands of all time! All of their music I have heard through spotify, which I believe is mostly 2009 stereo remasters but not all of the songs mixes/versions are specified on spotify. I am now more than willing to add downloaded music to spotify if it will…

…at when deciding on which ones I prefer.

I hope you guys can help me know which I should even bother comparing, for example: The top mono and stereo versions/remasters of Revolver
are ______

Also if anyone could give me any insight to what all the spotify editions are because some are specified

…Truffle
is a good example, as is Dear Prudence
(especially the 'vocals, guitar and drums' mix) and EGSTHEMAMM.

A lot of it is the way the stereo field has been mixed. I just don't understand why Martin felt that bass all the way over to one side (often paired with the drums) was a great…

…Weeps
. In conversations I've had with other Beatle fans, the one thing we all wanted was centred drums, but we don't get that, at least not in the stereo version. Overall, big space has been given to the vocals, which is great but it does tend to shove the rhythm section aside. Frankly I'd like to…

…Steven Wilson given a go at remixing, he seems a lot better at it than Giles.

edit: I should add that these comments concern the standard stereo mix. The 5.1 mix is a lot better (and not as compressed!) and I suspect not as much care was taken to master the stereo mix.

…and that unreasonably annoys me. It's the same kind of editorialising we saw on the Peppers mix. Took a few listens for me to get used to the new stereo field; to me it sounds like he's done the same thing with the White Album
that he did for Peppers in that he took the best of the mono and stereo

…is no chance Apple will deviate from the standard and add tracks to the original albums despite the space available. You could easily have mono and stereo mixes on one disc but it's guaranteed Apple wouldn't and that's down to keeping the original albums presentations set in stone. An argument would be…

…the 1965 stereo mixes of 'Help

…because while I'm not a huge fan of the new mixes, Martha My Dear
is one of my least favourite new mixes. I'm not liking the seasickness-inducing 'stereo' effect on the piano at all, and the strings don't sit quite right imo. But that's something for another thread.

…bit later than other classic rock performers indeed... The 2009 was the perfection of the mastering for CD of the entire catalogue (both mono and stereo mixes) in order to preserve in CD and digital formats those original and historical mixes... Now we're talking about something very different…

…about something else, since there's no point in remixing an album to make it sound exactly the same. Here we have more depth, detail, and a new stereo panning which makes more sence now in 2018 after 50 years of mixing experience in the world of rock/pop music. So, it's not a reworking of the 2009

…the new mix would sell on its own. It would sell simply because it's the White Album

I prefer the original mono mix to the original stereo mix, but I have to agree with @Ron Nasty that stereo was the preferred.

@J Alesait, if you have evidence to the contrary, I would love to see it

I'd have to disagree there, JA. In my opinion, the White is the point where they switched to the stereo being the important mix.

They began switching to stereo at this point, but finally did it when the eight-track mixing desk was fully available

…mono mixes and for The Long And Winding Road
, i isolated the center channel so Phil's orchestra can't be heard.

For Abbey Road
, i left it in stereo since this was recorded with stereo in mind and the stereo is great. I also placed Her Majesty
in it's original position and removed the silence

…a big fan of remixes but i'll be checking out this one when i have time. Doubt it will be any better than the 1968 mono or stereo mixes, it'll probably be on par with the Sgt. Pepper
2017 stereo remix.

I'd say that the 1968 stereo mix is not the one the Beatles/George Martín cared about back in the day.

I'd have to disagree there, JA. In my opinion, the White is the point…

…where they switched to the stereo being the important mix. The last 24 hour session for the album saw them concentrating on the stereo, while the mono was largely made up of mixes that were made as they went along, with the mono mixes they made on that day largely concentrating on…

…songs they'd decided to crossfade during the stereo mix.

Unlike Pepper, where there are many comments from the band and their associates that the "mono" was the mix, I've never seen or heard any
