Beaucoups Of Blues, Ringo Starr’s second solo album, was recorded over a three-day period in Nashville, Tennessee, in June 1970.
Two sessions took place on each day: from 6-9pm, and 10pm to 1am the following morning.
The final set of sessions were on Saturday 27 June 1970. From 6pm the musicians worked on three songs: ‘Fastest Growing Heartache In The West’ by Larry Kingston and Fred Dycus; ‘Silent Homecoming’ by Sorrells Pickard; and ‘Loser’s Lounge’ by Bobby Pierce.
Three more tracks were recorded during the late night session: ‘I Wouldn’t Have You Any Other Way’ by Chuck Howard; ‘Coochy Coochy’ by Starr; and ‘Nashville Jam’, also known as ‘Nashville Freakout’, which was credited the studio musicians: Starr, Howard, Pickard, Jim Buchanan, Charlie Daniels, Pete Drake, DJ Fontana, Buddy Harman, Junior Huskey, Ben Keith, Jerry Kennedy, Dave Kirby, Grover Lavender, Charlie McCoy, Jerry Reed, George Richey, and Jerry Shook.
‘Beaucoups Of Blues’ was released as a single in the US on 5 October 1970, with ‘Coochy Coochy’ on the b-side. That song and ‘Nashville Freakout’ were issued as bonus tracks on the 1995 reissue of the album.
Starr returned to England on 1 July 1970, having completed the recordings. Beaucoups Of Blues was mixed in Nashville, and the tapes were received by EMI from Apple on 8 September, shortly before the album’s release later that month.
