I was there that night with my brother Vince and pal Vic. Earlier in the afternoon we saw them walking down Eastgate Street but we were too ‘scared/nervous/shy’ to cross over the road to talk to them. The opportunity was lost forever but we didn’t know it, thinking they would be back to Gloucs or Cheltenham often – like Marty Wilde, Joe Brown, Carl Denver etc.! We had seen them before in Stroud way before they had a recording contract and in those days everyone threw pennies onto the stage floor to acts we really liked. We remembered John & Paul picking the pennies up at the end of their session but ‘the drummer’ (Pete Best) not bothering so we thought he must be rich!
In Gloucester Regal the program showed Chris Montez would close the first half but Please Please Me had hit Radio Luxemburg all the time and so we ‘guessed’ that was why The Beatles closed the first half which was a move up the program for them
As his last song Tommy Roe started to sing Sheila & we stamped the floor with our feet like the ‘Sheila’ drumming and shouted for the Beatles to close the second half as well. It didn’t work.
When the Beatles came out with the rest of the acts for a final bow they got the biggest applause – but we didn’t throw pennies because this is where we used to go for ABC Minors on Saturdays and the manager & ice-cream girls knew us!
