I'm not very well versed in guitar, and I've always wondered what "bendy" playing is. Care to enlighten me?

Always a pleasure to enlighten my favourite poster, even if I'm not addressed personally.

Is that ok, kedame and Ben?

Please correct me if I put it wrong.

On the fretboard every fret is a certain note when you press the string.

"Bending" means that you bend the string, thus increasing the "tightness", thus increasing the pitch, so the note gets higher.

Check out "Another girl" or the "Ticket to ride" fills for examples.

Yes, it's fine if you answer me! Does Paul play the fills in Another Girl and Ticket to Ride?

Paulsbass, there is NOTHING to talk over regarding this!

Just because a song is popular does NOT make it great!

Period!

!

I agree with this to a certain extent…as in what is the most played song in any given week doesn't mean it is great. HOWEVER, if a song remains very popular for a very long time, I'd say there is a good chance it's a great song. Why else would it remain so popular? Popularity over a long period of time means people like it, regardless of age. There are great songs that aren't popular, but a lot of the most popular songs on that list…well, they're just great songs!

Oh please give me a break. I'm not the one who's been filling this thread with snarky little remarks like "Feel free to apologize. I might even accept it." Stating my opinion in emphatic terms is not the same as being rude – and is something you've done so yourself many times. If you find exclamation marks offensive, that's not my problem. As for being OT, this whole damn thread is off topic. I'd say that posting a list of 200 non-Beatles songs is somewhat off-topic! (Assuming that's what you mean by OT.)

My viewpoint on this will not change: Popularity and greatness can overlap, and often do; but one is NOT a guarantee of the other.

NOW we're back on topic! *Irony off* (Wow, I didn't know OT was such an uncommon abbrevation in the internet…What do the young folks call it today?)

Maybe you care to read the postings I was answering to.

If you like being called "stupid" (even not in the actual words) after claiming something entirely valid, go ahead!

I don't. So sue me.

Wasn't the first time I recognized Walrus for his bad manners. It always makes you look stupid when you call out somebody else and get proven wrong. His own fault. Happened to myself before. I usually DID show some class on these occasions.

You know I posted this list just to prove my point about Paul's guitar work being relevant, even essential in the Beatles and not "minimal", meaning "irrelevant", or "limited" (Christ…).

And I still won't keep on talking about that other subject, since it does not belong here.

Btw: the question this thread is about: Who's the best guitarist in the Beatles?

May I repeat my opinion from my first posting:

"It's a tough question with no real answer".

I think they're both great (Paul and George) but give Paul the edge.

Paulsbass, I re-read the entire thread, and I've seen you take offense when people challenge your opinion or question your facts. If they apologize, you offer a "thank you", then follow it up with something like "There, you see why you were wrong about that. And you're also wrong about this other thing…" That is what I'm seeing. You may not see it that way. We'll have to agree to disagree about that, as on so many other things.

I assumed you meant "Off Topic", but I've seen people type OT when they meant "Over (the) Top" before. Just felt the need to clarify.

OT is Off Topic. OTT is Over The Top. Anyone using OT for Over The Top is wrong and needs to be retaught internet etiquette and shorthand.

Exactly. Paulsbass (if I may paraphrase Jon Stewart) has a problem with everything we say that isn't "Praise be to the lord Paul McCartney, Master of All Instruments"

If they do so in a nasty way, I take offense at THAT, not at the challenge.

If someone is sooooooooo sure that what I said was soooooooo "obviously wrong" I admit taking a certain pleasure in showing how he was wrong himself.

This may sound "smug" sometimes, and maybe it is, but I'm only reacting here.

Edit: I'Ve re-read the whole thread myself now, and there is NOTHING I can see where I did something wrong.

I DID see how you and a certain other poster kept misunderstanding me vehemently.

If they apologize, you offer a "thank you", then follow it up with something like "There, you see why you were wrong about that. And you're also wrong about this other thing…" That is what I'm seeing.

This is a quite spectacular misinterpretation and mixing up of the facts. I won't go into detail here. I can only repeat: I was only reacting.

You see a picture of me that I am not. You don't know me. And I don't know you, so I couldn't care less about your thoughts about me.

I was trying to be polite and respectful, as well towards George AND Paul and to every user, especially to you!

When some (*cough* certain) people try to put me into a position of a Paul-over-everything fanboy who doesn't accept a single bad word about him – they couldn't be more wrong, and they embarrass themselves.

If you re-read the whole thread you must have read the part where I even made fun of Paul's bending.

Or the three times when I acknowledged George's greatness.

What I don't like and don't accept is being called out by some teenagers who claim all the world's wisdom for themselves.

That's a common mistake in this age-group, and I know excactly how it felt to discover the Beatles and feeling the urge to tell everybody everything about them, as if they didn't know a thing.

Well, I'm 20 years older now, and while I kind of understand their behaviour I don't feel the need to take bs by anyone.

I like calling out the bullshitters myself, and that's what I do. Guilty of even enjoying it a little bit.

But I certainly will get along nicely with everyone who's interested in polite conversation.

I'm (mostly) only reacting.

Btw, about your "rudeness": When I say "Let's talk this over another time" and you answer with "THERE'S NOTHING TO TALK ABOUT!" I consider that quite rude. If you don't there's another thing we disagree about.

I assumed you meant "Off Topic", but I've seen people type OT when they meant "Over (the) Top" before. Just felt the need to clarify.

Sorry, I have NEVER seen people type that, so I didn't know there was any other meaning for OT, which I see all the time.

You may not.

Jon Stewart is a genius.

You are (very often acting like) a fool.

Thanks for proving my point, btw.

Running out of talking points, losing arguments and teaming up with other users against me.

Embarrassing.

But, I give you that:

"Discussions" with you have added quite a big number of postings for me, so thanks for that!

Imo you can say the same thing about on paul on guitar that you can say about george on bass. Both played awesome lines on the instruments of which some imo rank among the beatles best's (george on bass: old brown shoe, birthday (both were possibly mccartney), maxwell's silver hammer (I've always liked it), two of us (it's not played on a bass but most people call ot a bassline); paul on guitar: taxman, helter skelter, the end (his solo in the end is probably my favourite; all in all are the end's solos my favourite beatles solos)) but the other one played so many fantastic lines, that for me it's impossible to say that paul was better on guitar or george better on bass) Because harrison and mccarrney are oth my favourite beatles (very few before lennon) i don't prefer any of them when I write this

I am done. Please stop posting, everyone. There's no point left. We are talking about things we shouldn't be, like how rude or unrude someone was, or proper use of Internet slang. My opinions have been stated. I am merely repeating myself for no apparent reason. I can't, in good conscience, let my posts become as personal as they will become if this doesn't end. Paulsbass – I respect your knowledge of the Beatles, and I have learned to value your opinions. We might not always agree, but I propose keeping our disagreements… civil at the very least. I do value your posts, and am still shocked by your dedication in finding those McCartney guitar songs (a few I never knew he played, honestly). However, an dispute is, at it's heart, an argument between two people. I may have been (in fact, I was) too eager to dismiss this thread as worthy of actual debate, and my use of minimal was incorrect. This does go both ways – you aren't blameless. We both need to admit that not everything is meant to be provocative. I don't like getting into forum fights with you – and hope the same is true of you. So, I ask in the name of my sanity, that we please refrain from these forum fights. Please?

Also, you're a Jon Stewart fan? Awesome!! I never expected you to be the one who got that joke, honestly.

I still don't completey get how we even got to disagree, since we started out with about the same opinion in this thread…

Dude, maybe you skipped these postings, but I already asked you several times on several threads to keep a civil tongue, telling you that I was not interested in a fight but wanting to get along with you since I respect you as a Beatles fan, remember?

I appreciate the emergency stop you pulled here, and the appreciation of myself, and of course the same goes the other way.

Let there be peace.

Amen to that. I only really skim read a lot of these threads nowadays, but it's bizarre how many of them turn into disagreements over quite minor points which get endlessly debated and elevated out of proportion. Debate is good, but let's have it over subjects rather than personalities.

Paulsbass, I apologize if you took my excessive use of exclamation marks as rudeness; they were intended as emphasis only. Exclamation marks can mean different things to different people. I'd stated my opinion once, then twice, and felt no need to discuss it further. That's all I meant. The final exclamation mark was used for concrete-poetic affect – I liked the way it looked on the screen after the single word and the two double-spaced sentences.

And to further clarify, I didn't deny typing "THERE IS NOTHING TO TALK ABOUT!"; but only denied doing so in all capital letters. However, I'd forgotten that I did capitalize the "NOTHING" so I apologize for that too. I would've used the more polite italics, except the toolbar doesn't work for my accounts, making italics (and quoting, and bolding) a pain. (And adding smileys, images or embedded youtubes impossibly complicated.)

Enough of this. Peace. Maybe I'll see you on the "Ram Remastered" thread and we can hurl abuse at Jon Landau together. [apple]
