Are there any Beatle or solo songs that have been forever ruined for you (or was ruined but you eventually recovered) because of some association with a TV show or movie, a bad teacher, a tone-deaf friend, an ex, etc?

It doesn’t have to be a “bad” association. It could be a parody or sketch that affects how you hear the song. I mentioned in the Let It Be thread that I’ll probably never hear the song again without thinking, “Oi!” or “hands off my granny.” :-D

I was inspired to create this thread because Pandora was playing at work, and “Here Comes The Sun ” came on. And I told my boss that I used to associate the song as a teen with the movie Star 80 because there’s a scene where Eric Roberts does an acoustic version, and it’s really creepy because you already know what his character eventually does to Dorothy Stratten.

I also can’t hear certain Beatle songs without thinking of or even singing the Anthology version. A Day In The Life is one of those (“…and grabbed my HAAAAT!”). Or Rocky Racoon and the “sminking.” I suppose how Anthology forever affects our hearing a song could be a thread in itself, but I’ll start with here.

Granny has really gotten to you :D

But hearing multiple versions of songs can seriously confuse you. I listened to Love last night and now I’ve got the alternate lyrics to While My Guitar Gently Weeps stuck in my head. To say nothing of discovering a bass mistake in Octopus’s Garden ! I get associations from the sequencing of songs. It took me years to shake off the sequencing from the Red and the Blue albums, particularly the Blue Album . It is not a happy coincidence that Hello Goodbye follows I Am The Walrus I always feel restless towards the end of that song because subconsciously I’m getting ready to stop playing before that damn song starts. I’ve mentioned that The Long And Winding Road has specific childhood memories that make me shun it.

Funny you mention the sequencing, because I can’t hear In My Life without immediately thinking of Wait . I don’t believe I have the sequencing stuck in my head the way I do with those two songs, even though I was allowed only two Beatle albums as a child, and one of them was Yesterday and Today.

Even at a Beatle singalong meetup I belong too, when we sang the former, a guitarist jokingly played the first few notes of the latter. Perhaps it’s the stark contrast between the two that’s cemented it in our heads.

It really affects me, I can hear the last notes of Because almost but not quite merge into the initial piano of You Never Give Me Your Money . Good sequencing is very powerful, it’s the art of the album. But closer to the subject, I confess I hate When I’m Sixty-Four because I was forced to sing it in primary school, just like Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da . They’ve always been ruined for me.

All You Need Is Love was ruined for me.

Some song blend together in my head like Julia turns into I Will and Mother Natures Son when I think about it.

Because of the BB videos, when ever I hear Help ! I think about A Kidnapping Catastrophe cause Help ! is the first song in the video.

Peter Serafinowicz kind of ruined “I Will ” for me with his parody, “I’ll Kill”. I can’t hear the song now without thinking his creepy Paul impersonation.

Nothing else comes to mind. I’ve gotten over most of the other situations that have ruined songs for me.

I just ignore/forget the crap and enjoy the Beatles.

Thought of some more at work: first, Revolution . The first time I ever heard it was in the Nike commercial, and I’ve hated it ever since. And when I listen to the album version, I keep thinking of the weirdly extreme close-ups and John making weird faces during the promo. Luckily there’s Take 20 to take my mind off the negative associations.

The first time I heard Because was when I was in a sucky a capella group, and I was singing the harpsicord. We segued into You Never Give Me Your Money for our performance. Luckily, I’ve managed to shake off the badness of the live performances.

But closer to the subject, I confess I hate When I’m Sixty-Four because I was forced to sing it in primary school, just like Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da . They’ve always been ruined for me.

When I’m Sixty-Four was also ruined by my hearing it first in the trailer for The World According to Garp as a child. I thought it was an insanely stupid song (still not fond of it). Then I heard an a capella version in college. That was a good group, but the arrangement was corny. After the “Vera, Chuck and Dave” part, the lead singer and another member would start joking, “I don’t know about Vera. What do you think?” before going into the last verse.

You weren’t on the board yet, ewe2 but I’ve mentioned that I already hated Ebony And Ivory , and that was exacerbated by being forced to sing it for a school assembly.

Clearly I had a lot to contribute for this thread. ;-D

On first listen, I thought Because was part of the medley.

No songs have really been ruined for me, but my mom hates Yesterday due to a movie it was in. Don’t recall the name, but Dick Van Dyke was in it and he was an alcoholic and it was apparently very sad and ended with the song.

I haven’t seen the movie, but it sounds like the song was used well in context. Probably too well. ahdn_paul_01

Ignoring my above post does the medley on Red Rose Speedway count? That’s been ruined for me by previously listening to it.
