From a news article I just saw.

A Trenton, South Carolina man has been arrested and charged in connection to a jewelry theft.

Lieutenant Jake Mahoney, with the Aiken Department of Public Safety, tells us that 32-year-old John Lennon Sharpe was arrested on Friday, November 13th and charged with Grand Larceny (more than $10,000).

Introducing Ringo the Rhino — With Peace and Love From Ringo Starr

A little bit from the article

…Asked to name the baby, we debated between a traditional Kenyan name versus a name that might help bring attention to the loss of 90 percent of the world’s rhinos.

I thought immediately of Ringo Starr whose love of rhinos made him a great fit for this beautiful baby. Three years ago, to help bring awareness to the battle against poaching, Ringo changed the main page of his website to the photo of a baby rhino. With Ringo’s name, this baby rhino — and many others — might have a little better chance of survival.

The idea of a rhino named Ringo seemed like a nice tribute to my favorite Beatle and an opportunity to bring awareness to Ol Pejeta’s multi-faceted approach to stopping the slaughter and saving every rhino we can.

Much to our delight, Ringo Starr replied that he’d be honored to have a baby rhino named after him and could help us spread the word.

Not Back in the USSR! Beatles star John Lennon gets a street named after him in Ukraine

lenin-lennon.jpgImage Enlarger

Google Maps replaced Ukraine’s Soviet-era names this week

A street in the rural village of Kalyna in Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine is being renamed after famous Beatles singer John Lennon .

The current governor of the region Hennadiy Moskal signed a decree approving the name change on March 2, according to his official website.

The affected street is located the village that is home to fewer than 6,000 people but a growing hotspot for green tourism, according to one travel agency.

Surprisingly, it’s not the first time John Lennon ‘s name has been used in Ukraine’s decommunization drive. Last month, local government chiefs decided to use ‘John Lennon Square’ instead of ‘Soviet Square’ in the town of Izyum, Kharkiv region.

Then, officials said they were confident more tourists would descend on the area as a result of the name change, newspaper Vesti reported.

Another story: Ukrainian Village Renames Street From ‘Lenin’ To ‘John Lennon’

“It is part of Ukraine’s larger effort to “de-communize” names and symbols across the country.”

Would Yoko have to sign off on something like this?

Whilst Yoko may well have been informed, @Ahhh Girl, it would not have needed her approval.

The Estate of John Lennon , which of course is managed by Yoko, has control over commercial use of John’s name, naming a place in John’s memory would not constitute commercial use.

Why is it weird that they would choose John and not Paul, @Starr Shine??

John was a huge hero in what is the former Soviet Block. His murder saw an outpouring of grief behind the Iron Curtain, even though his and The Beatles’ music was officially banned. He was seen as an inspiration to break the Communist hold over them.

One need only look at the Lennon Wall in Prague (in the former Czechoslovakia), which was used as a place of protest against Communist rule from the moment it began in 1981, to understand how much of hero John was to those attempting to free themselves from the dictatorship of Communist rule.

John Lennon-themed beer

For our beer enthusiasts. Looks like you have a reason to go to Iowa if you don’t live there. (@Zig, et al.).

A piece of the article:

636313198918998831-lemon.jpgImage Enlarger

Come together right now … over a new John Lennon -themed beer.

Coined “John Lemon Tart Pale Ale,” the newly announced collaboration brew comes from Des Moines’ Exile Brewing Co. and Denver’s Station 26 Brewing Co. in celebration of the impending Des Moines Beer Week, which runs June 16-25.

Described in a news release as “a single malt, single hop beer that features Exile’s signature sour culture, as well as Lemondrop hops,” John Lemon comes in at 5.5 percent alcohol-by-volume.

Station 26 brewer Wayne Waananen joined the Exile beer crew in Des Moines on Thursday afternoon to craft the John Lemon batch.

“The John Lemon collaboration is a special one since it is the first time we have partnered with a brewery from outside of Iowa,” Exile head brewery Joey Hansen said via email.

A John Lemon launch party is scheduled for 4 p.m. on June 9 at the Exile taproom, 1514 Walnut St. Starting June 13, a limited supply of the beer will be available in bottles and kegs at central and eastern Iowa restaurants, bars and grocery retailers.

Exile has a Ziggy Stardust beer too.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Cool story. As a former Sex Pistols fanatic, I like the fact one of them was named after Johnny Rotten (rotten Johnny).
