Hello everybody on the forum!

My name is Hubert and I’m a student. I attend a course about the history of the 1960s and The Beatles, and the cultural and social changes of that time. Our professor tasked us to gather some memories of people, who lived at these times in a form of a little “interview”. So I you are a person, that lived during the sixties and you would like to share some of your memories by answering a couple of questions it would be of much help. You can stay anonymous if you want, but I’m very interested how life looked like at that time 🙂 Only my fellow students from my group will read your answers as part of our class. Here are the questions, please leave your answer in this topic or send me a private message if you want to keep it more private! Thank you very much! I’m very sorry if this is the wrong section or it’s violating some rules of the forum.

  1. Please, tell me a bit about yourself. Who are you, what are your occupations, hobbies?
  2. Who were you during the sixties decade? A student? Or maybe were you working somewhere? What part of your life was it?
  3. From the perspective of today we call the ’60 – “Crazy sixties”. Was that decade really that unique and full of crazy things? What’s your opinion? How do you recall those times in general?
  4. An important thing about the sixties is music. What were your favorite musicians or bands of the time? Who had the most influence on you? The Beatles? The Rolling Stones, The Kinks? Or maybe somebody entirely different?
  5.  Today music is easily accesible to everyone thanks to the internet, digital music shops, online streaming services like Spotify or Tidal, we can watch music videos on YouTube, follow our favorite musicians on Facebook or Twitter. But ofcourse back in the day it had to be completely different. What was your main source of music during the sixties? Were you an owner of a phonograph? Collecting vinyl discs? Or maybe the radio played a major role?
  6. How about live music? Was it popular to attend concerts, go to live music clubs? Did you go to concerts or music festivals? How did it feel?
  7. Young people today don’t have much knowledge about the sixties. They often got just ideas connected to that time, like for example, that it was the hippie era and anti war movements. Were such social groups like the hippies very popular at that time, or it’s more of an exaggeration, that they were everywhere? Were you or one of your friends part of such movement or identified with their ideology? (another example is the “young angry men”).
  8. What is your best memory of that time? What was so good about the sixties, what was bad from a time perspective? How would you rate this decade, did it have a lot of influence on modern times?
  9. Do you have anything to add? Would you like to share something more about the 1960s?
  10. Thank you very much for your answers!

I was a college student in the late ’80s. In one class, we were tasked with interviewing people who were young adults in the ’60s. I “interviewed” my mother. I asked her what the ’60’s were like. She said, “I got married and had a baby girl.” Man, I hope your interviews go better than that.

Welcome to the forum. We do have a few members who can recall the 60’s. Hopefully they can share some ideas with you.

I’m 50, born in ’65 so I was a mere babe / child in the 60s. Mostly I remember the music that played in the house courtesy of my parents. It’s what instilled the great love I have for classic rock. Beatles, Stones, Dylan… later Zeppelin, etc.

Like any decade, there’s good and bad. I think the 60s have been really romanticized if you will. Hippies, peace, love. There was a great deal of turbulence during the decade as well, at least the latter half. My mom would be a better person to elaborate further. She always says that the first half of the 60s was the same as the 50s, then everything changed in the latter half. I do think that it did have a lot of influence on subsequent decades, sure. Musically, politically, etc.

I wish I could give you better and more in depth answers to your questions. Good luck with your project and I hope you get some great feedback here.

Hi Hubert, welcome.

I had just turned 10 when the Beatles arrived in America. I lived in New York (still do).

As a young child I always enjoyed listening to music on the radio and would play some of my parents’ records on my little “record player.” Music however was never a topic of conversation in school.

The Beatles changed EVERYTHING. Overnight, EVERYONE was talking about the Beatles and EVERYONE had to go spend their allowance on Meet the Beatles. I still have my original copy and it is hopelessly scratched from having been played thousands of times.

As important as their music was, their LOOK caught on. Until then, boys used all sorts of creams for their hair (the “wet” look). Boys all suddenly wanted to look like the Beatles. Hair combed forward. No creams – the ‘dry’ look. And of course, ALL the musical bands wanted to look like the Beatles, which is quite obvious when you look at pictures of bands from the ’60s. What a cultural impact!!!

Beatle music was unrelenting. Every few weeks it seemed there was a new song on the radio, a new album or a new movie. When Beatles VI came out I remember telling my parents that I’d really, really try to stop spending my allowance on their records. That didn’t last long.

And then suddenly … the British Invasion  with TONS of great music + our own Beach Boys , then Simon and Garfunkel, etc…. There was such VARIETY of music. EVERY type of music was ‘hey man, that’s cool” You want to introduce the flute to rock music? Sure, go for it! (Jethro Tull, Moody Blues)

The next huge breakthrough was Jimi Hendrix who brought us the truly electric guitar. I got to see him at Madison Square Garden and took some good pictures.

Music, music, music was the constant topic in school.

New York was super exciting in the late 60s. You should watch the movie “Hair.” Everyone WAS dressed somewhat hippie style (at least those under 30 – remember, there was the ‘generation gap’). Central Park was filled with hippie-looking people (even non-hippies had that look) and music and the smell of marijuana. Skirts were very short and ties were very wide.

When I think of New York back then, I think of COLOR. Lots of it. Day-Glo orange and yellow and green,…. New York buses featured posters by Peter Max. (You should definitely go to his web site.)

I would go to concerts on a regular basis at the Fillmore East, the NY counterpart to the Fillmore West in California. Only $5.50. Still have the ticket stubs. There was the early show at  8 PM and the late show at 11 PM. Being 15 or so, I went to the early show… They always had 3 bands: a band you never heard of; an up-and-coming band, and of course the headliner. I saw Chicago when they were up-and-coming; they’d just released their first hit “25 or 6 to 4.” Saw Jethro Tull twice; what a super accomplished group of musicians. (The band changed after Aqualung and took on a very different sound). Slowly though, the big name bands started to play at Madison Square Garden which of course lacks all intimacy. There, I saw Hendrix, the Stones, the Doors, Cream…

Of course, the other BIG excitement of the 60s was the Race to the Moon…

Have fun with your project!!! Happy to discuss any time.

Thank you very much for sharing those memories! It really feels incredible to read it, I would like to time travel right away, to witness these things with my own eyes, haha 🙂

I think I have what I needed for now. Cheers, I wish you all the best!
