… an original Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever, for £7, from a car boot sale.

However, it is a mis-pressing. It's actually Penny Lane/Penny Lane.

How rare were mis-pressing? Are they considered in any way valuable, or are they still "rejects"? What about perfect original singles, are they considered valuable  or are they fairly worthless because there were just so many?

Probably worth something, but I doubt that normal singles are worth much.

I tried to think of something powerful and moving… and failed.  "You were given a choice between war and dishonor - you chose dishonor, and you shall have war" - Winston Churchill

Mispress meaning that in one side you have Penny Lane and in the other the same song?? Or it's just an error in the cover?

Oh, then it should be quite valuable. Possibly unique.

After a bit of investigation, it is actually a 1976 edition, not the 1967. Here is the cover:

It must be valuable. Imagine if the person who got it from the store was more a Lennon than a McCartney fan. Totally pissed off paul-mccartney

And a-hard-days-night-paul-8 Paul agrees!! 17!

Did the seller know about it? That might give you an indication of it's value. If they sold it knowing it was a misprint, then they're either really stupid or know that it's not that valuable. Fingers crossed for stupid. a-hard-days-night-john-5

Is the label the same on both sides, or does one say SFF?

I don't know about values, but I used to read Record Collector now and then when I was younger. Mispressings seem to be valued by collectors, though it normally depends on rarity and desirability (ie a first edition might be worth more than a 1976 version, but maybe not).

Please don't spoil my day; I'm miles away

She made it quite clear that it was a mispress. I'm hoping that she just thought that made it a reject copy. She wasn't the brightest, it has to be said- I offered ten pounds (which it was stickered for), and she haggled me down to seven!

Joe- the label says Strawberry Fields on one side and Penny Lane on the other. The Penny Lane side is slightly damaged (my dad thinks it should still play fine- unfortunately we don't own a record player so we can't check).

I have emailed someone who runs (or ran, at least) an online record retailer that specialises (or specialised) in Beatles records. I've also done a bit of Googling, and the Smiths's mispressed singles have a habit of going for £30-40.

If I can sell it, great. If not, I've acquired a copy of arguably the greatest single ever, except without the really good song. Imagine if it was Strawberry Fields on both sides a-hard-days-night-ringo-6

1. What about "Paperback Writer"/"Rain?"

2. LOL at the "except without the really good song" bit.

And another 9… weird…

Arguably. However, I just don't think that record compares. I'd put that closer to We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper.

For me their best singles were Hey Jude/Revolution and Come Together/Something.

It's still a great record. And I'm still incredibly jealous. a-hard-days-night-george-10

Expert guessed at $35. That's £22. £15 hypothetical profit.

I got a 15 \o/ Wanted to put a picture of Paul looking happy, but there aren't any. Was he moody for the whole of A Hard Day's Night or something?
