Actually the drivers are the ones who don't notice it!! The rule in my city is to go across the street in a heavy traffic avenue is : "Red light? Check. Is any car moving? No? Check. No crazy u-turns? Check... so, 1,2,3... Well I'll rather see you deaaaaaaaaaaaad little girl" and there goes Mithveaen running for her life.

But pedestrians are not that nice either. Sometimes I'm like Skye's situation. I'm like "Should I go or not?" The problem is that in heavy traffic we don't have pedestrian bridges ...

Seven years ago, when I lived in Arizona, you took your life in your hands by being in a cross walk. It may have changed there since then - maybe skye can shed some light on that.

Really Zig?? Wow.. I would have never believed it from an American State!!! In many states and cities in Mexico that law is enforced, but in my hometown is not. It's a quite adventure to try to cross a street. I always sing "Run for your life little girl!!!"

Here in Maine, it is a State Law that you have to stop for pedestrians in a cross walk.

Seven years ago, when I lived in Arizona, you took your life in your hands by being in a cross walk. It may have changed there since then - maybe skye can shed some light on that.

I think it varies from country to country. Here in the UK if someone's walking on a zebra crossing the traffic stops for them. I've been to other countries where, like you say, they're more ornamental. I'm not sure what the point of them is if cars aren't going to stop.

Sometimes I watch the Abbey Road live webcam, (I do it when I ask myself why I work too many hours. The answer : To afford a trip to London) and I must say it's really nice from the drivers to stop when someone wants to cross the road and have a pic taken.

Or maybe the drivers say "Oh for God sake not another friggin Beatle fan!!". Or maybe I live in a country where zebra crossings are nothing but painting on the street.

Yes, the link (and thread) is nearly a year old.

I've not been there for a while, but I think the Abbey Road street signs are painted on these days to stop people from stealing them.
