So yesterday I bought a copy of the White Album and when I took it out to play it I noticed something very strange - normally you'd have Side A, Side B, Side C, Side D etc, on mine it would go Side A, side C, side b side d. It wasn't just the label, because the songs from side c had been pressed on. I asked my friend and he said it was something about jukebox records or radio records....any ideas?

Hard to say as I don't know exactly which market's pressing you have, however this certainly wasn't unknown in the US (though I don't know that it WAS with the US edition). However, as I was discussing with Wetroosa about Capitol's The Beatles' Story double album about that having the same side set-up.

Here is the explanation. Many record players of the time looked like this:

With them you could load more than one record at a time. You could put multiple records onto them at a time. The main thought at the time was singles, but they just as well for albums. Once you started the player, the first disc would drop into place, the arm would lift across, and the record would play. At its end, the arm would lift off and go back to rest position, the second record would drop, and the arm would lift across to play the second disc. This would stop you having to get up every few minutes to change the record.

Double albums did not start emerging until the mid-60s (Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde). However, when they did, many markets, recognising these were the most common record players at the time, also recognised that the easiest way for someone to hear to the album, would be to have side 1 and 2 on different discs, allowing those to be listened to in order without the need to get up and turn them over, get up and turn them over, and get sides 3 and 4.

That's more clearer. Thanks!

Of course, quite often the stacking and spinning caused the records to vary a little in speed with some very odd results.  I also didn't like the way they crashed down onto the one below so very rarely used the 'arm of doom'.

We still use our old record player like the one you described, mja6758.

If the Beatles put anything out on reel-to-reel, we could still listen to them on our player.

I have a handful of Beatle reel to reels but no means to play them. We should get together and have a listening party.

Do you have White Album on reel-to-reel? I've heard it, and you tak about messing with a good thing: "Eagle picks my eye, worm licks my bones" line is removed from "Yer Blues," "Glass Onion" is missing a verse, and there is no "Can you take me back..." coda in "Cry Baby Cry." It's very disorienting to listen to.

That'd be so cool. We could rent out a big meeting room somewhere and have a Fab Forum Members Only listening party. Well, you know, if Ringo or Paul wanted to attend, we could make exceptions for them if they aren't members.

wetsroosa. Yes. I got it in a second-half record shop in Glasgow with a handful of other reel-to-reel US albums and empty boxes for about £8 each (the empty boxes were half that - I had 4 others from when in Kilmarnock a few months earlier before costing £15 each so it seemed a bargain). As said I've never listened to any of them as I don't have the means but they are pretty cool to have.

Cbatcu, We could invite Ringo and Paul and when they turn up we could get them to answer a few questions and then not let them leave until they give us their direct phone numbers and agreeing to letting us stay with them when we are in their neighbourhood.

This is good information to know in case I buy a used record like this. I have The White Album, American version; however, it is labeled side A, side B, side C, and side D. I have record player thats a newer model, but its shaped to look like a old one. I often forget about the record players that could play/stack multiple records. I know some car stereos from the 90s had 6 disc cd player. Some you could put multiple disc in the cd slot, while other cars had this unit in the back of the car where you put the cds.

The record player I have looks like this:

Who knows, one of these day maybe the twain shall meet.

And to the idea of Ringo and Paul showing up: anyone got some ropes ready to tie them to their chairs? I don't want to have to water board them, but we might get desperate. NOT!

I don't think Paul or Ringo are on the herbal smokes anymore or we could offer them a one or two if they stayed, maybe some humus and chickpeas would get them turning up instead.

Just had a look at my copy of The Beatle Story and that has side 1 backed by side 4 and then side 2 backed with side 3. Is yours the same mja?
