Offline"The Abbey Road zebra crossing in London, made famous by The Beatles on the cover of their 1969 album of the same name, has been given listed status by Minister for Tourism and Heritage John Penrose.
The crossing, which has long been a site of pilgrimage for
Beatles fans, has been given a Grade II
listing. The status means it's officially recognised as a nationally
important monument and has increased protection. It is the first time
such an honour has been given to a zebra crossing."
What do you guys think about this? Do you agree that Abbey Road is an important British monument as, say, Big Ben? Or do you think this honour has been long overdue?

I'm just curious how you protect it. They've never had to repave that area?
Yeah, me, too! Is it the surrounding area (as in no graffiti) that's also being protected, or are there going to be cameras around in case anyone wants to somehow take a lark chunk of the crosswalk home with them?

There's already a camera.

OfflineI find it hilarious that they have decided to honor a crosswalk as a national monument. As much as I love the zebra crosswalk it does not really deserve to be a British monument.
Grade II listed status isn't all that much of a big deal, though it's a nice story. My mum's house is Grade II listed (she lives in Bath, which has UNESCO world heritage status). Basically it means the zebra crossing owners (in this case probably Westminster Council) can't make major changes to it without getting planning permission. It's given to quite a lot of things that have some kind of significance, so in this case it's apt enough.
EDIT I should add that my mum doesn't live in a mansion or anything, just a normal terraced house. It was built in the 18th century though, like most of Bath.
