Same here. It’s not a track i play often but there is plenty going on to find interesting. Its certainly far better than ‘What’s The New Mary Jane ‘.

When and where did that exactly happen ? Only on the Please Please Me LP with both sides of Love Me Do and Please Please Me singles because at that time they didn’t have their say yet. And again with both sides of the Can’t Buy Me Love single on the A Hard Day’s Night LP (The A Hard Day’s Night single was released the same day that the album so there was no need for the real fans to buy both). Again on the Help album you find the A sides of the Ticket To Ride and Help singles, but not the B sides. (It may not be a coincidence that both are soundtracks). There’s no singles on the other albums: With The Beatles , Beatles For Sale , Rubber Soul , Revolver (Again the Yellow Submarine single was issued on the same date that the album so there was no need for the real fans to buy both), Sgt Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band (George Martin regretted it but they chose to release Strawberry Fields Forever & Penny Lane as a single instead of putting them on the album) and Magical Mystery Tour at that time (November 68) was still only a double EP. And of course we’re talking only about original albums, the UK ones. And singles released after the LP’s with tracks pulled from them were not aimed at the fans who already owned the albums but at those who only bought singles containing the hits they heard on the radio. So the Beatles chose to release Hey Jude and Revolution as a single and not put them on the double LP because they hadn’t really broke that rule since a long time. It’s not fair to put them on it by using this argument because it’s simply not true; It’s you who breaks a Beatles rule .You’re not allowed to do that ! As John said himself: You Can’t Do That !

Offline Given the album’s length (93 minutes), they could have removed Revolution 9 and then just kept the rest of the album as it is. There’s no real need for any other songs to take its place.

Offline I purchased the White Album on the day of release, November 22, 1968. Seeing the album cover for the first time, I thought… Wow, that’s different! The idea of a double album from my musical heroes was very exciting. I rushed home from the record store, (yes, we had those back in the day), carefully opened my treasure and placed it on my turntable. From the first sound of those jet engines revving up on “Back In The USSR ” to the opening drumbeat of “Birthday “, I was in awe of every track. Some songs truly Beatles-esque, while others were eccentric, old school, fresh and ground-breaking.
I listened to, what I was sure, was their best effort to date, as I carefully mounted the enclosed photos on my bedroom wall and followed the lyrics that were conveniently printed on the back of the wild poster (it was like the Toy Surprise inside a box of Cracker Jack).
After flipping over Side 3 to Side 4 and listening to “Revolution 1 ” (wow, that was different than the 45 version), “Honey Pie “, “Savoy Truffle ” (definitely George) and “Cry Baby Cry “… the needle found “Revolution 9 “. I remember thinking… “WTF is that??? That’s not a song, that’s just noise.” I waited for one of the Fab Four to break into the madness and give me some classic lyrics after agonizing through that strange introduction… but it never came.
Back on topic… What would I put in the place of Revolution 9 ? Nothing… without “R9”, the White Album is classic Beatles that stands on its own and needs nothing more.

Offline I would choose “Lady Madonna “. I decided this over other tracks like “Hey Jude ” or “The Inner Light ” because I like “Lady Madonna ” better, and I didn’t choose “Revolution ” because there is already “Revolution 1 ” which is a watered down version of “Revolution “.

Yeah it was going under the name of Child Of Nature (sometimes listed on bootlegs as ‘On The Road To Rishikesh’). John rewrote the lyrics for ‘Jealous Guy ‘. The Esher demo from May 1968 is in the spoiler.
