I've said this before, but I don't think John literally said "heavy metal" - I believe that the quote from the Wenner interview regarding TTR was something like "That's a fuckin' heavy song for that time" or such. He didn't use the word "metal", and I suspect he may have meant "heavy" as in deep or meaningful. Aside from that, I have no idea how he could've heard metal in "Ticket To Ride"'s tricky beats and chiming 12-string guitars! But if there's another source besides that Wenner interview (like say the David Sheff interview, maybe) wherein John actually uses the ...

I think quite often Lennon would say things without really thinking them through, or caring how they'd be interpreted. Once they were in print they'd be taken as his firm beliefs (I'm guilty of this sometimes), when they were just off-the-cuff comments. I think the TTR/metal thing was one of those.

I'm in the minority of Beatles fans that believes Helter Skelter wasn't the first metal song. It's just noisy, abrasive rock and roll, it's not got any of the "technical" side which characterises most metal. It's more proto-proto-punk in it's execution and style. In the same way Blue Cheer, mentioned by Old Siam Sir, are more just psychedelic blues rock to my ears. They were just heavier than anyone before.

As for Ticket to Ride being the first metal song, that's just rubbish that John cooked up in an interview when he was in a pro-Beatles mood if you ask me. ...

No one mentioned Blue Cheer? Most critics claim that Summertime Blues by Blue Cheer is the first heavy metal song. Steppenwolf coined the term in Born to be Wild: "Heavy Metal Thunder". Any self respecting metal-head will tell you that Black Sabbath were the first heavy metal band. Obviously, like any other genre of music, metal grew from what came before. Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Hendrix...these are all major influences on the groups that became "metal". If you ask me I think that Helter Skelter is a major contender for the first heavy metal song. Macca wrote it in response ...

Very true. My dad says "They do do dough don't they" a lot but he didn't even realise it was a line from Yellow Submarine 'til he watched it again after so many years. For me, the joke that I always remember is Ringo's line from Help! "Well, you know, I thought… I thought she was a sandwich, 'til she went spare on me hand."

Slightly off topic though. Although, perhaps it could be a new topic...
