Hello,

yesterday my father passed away at the age of 63. He was able to talk about songs he'd like to be played at his funeral/cremation. One of the songs is from The Beatles - The Long And Winding Road.

But the version he wants is specific. He described it at as a version where "birds" can be heared in the song.

Can somebody please help me finding this version? Can i buy it somewhere or download?

Hope someone knows this because i am not a connaisseur.

thanks in advance

Bart Harms

@Ron Nasty or @meanmistermustard, do either of you have an answer for Mr. Harms?

Is it possible your father meant Across The Universe, Wildlife Version? That is the only one I know that has birds. It is on Past Masters disc 2.

If definitely the Beatles it would be either Free As A Bird or as Ex Tex said the Past Masters Across The Universe, there is no version of The Long And Winding Road with wildlife effects.   If someone can put up a video of each from youtube for Bart to hear that would be great. Am on the wifi from hell as i type so cant.

Sorry to hear of your loss Bart by the way. All the best to yourself, friends and family at this difficult time.

Bardiebart, I'm so sorry about your father. :( My own dad was also only 63 when he died.

My sympathies are with you and your family. Take care. heart

My condolences, Bart.

I have to agree with my friends above that the description of birds being heard during the song does not fit any known Beatles version of The Long And Winding Road. Please believe me, I know all here would love to point you to a version of the song that fitted the description, and would have offered to email you a version to save you having to hunt around for it.

It feels awkward telling you, no matter how specific your Father was, that there is no version of The Long And Winding Road which features the sound of birds. Between us, we have heard every version of that song (legally and illegally) available.

The suggestions made above are both good, and I would have made both, I would have suggested what I believe a more likely fit first however.

Knowing that it cannot be The Long And Winding Road, but going from the basis of it being a Paul McCartney Beatles' song featuring the sound of birds during it, my first suggestion would have to be 1968's Blackbird from The Beatles (White Albumas it features birdsong during the actual song.

I apologise that we have been unable to point at a version of The Long And Winding Road that fits your description, and hope that one of our suggestions helps.

Again, my condolences at this difficult time.

We can never know what his father was thinking, but I think Across The Universe - Wildlife Version is a good bet, because the song (but not the version with birds) is on the same album as The Long And Winding Road, and (not accounting for bootlegs or the Anthology version) there are two versions of Across The Universe (with and wtihout birds) and The Long And Winding Road (with and without strings). He may have just confused the two--or maybe both were important to him.
