The first line "words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup" has always been hard for me to understand but at the same time I completely get it, if you know what I mean.
Yeah and it's so cool because there are so many different versions (5 I think) and each one is unique. John's voice is so beautiful and sad in all of them, I almost feel like this song is his dedication to Cynthia in a way, or maybe who he was before Yoko.
| I was lying next to my first wife in bed and I was thinking. It started off as a negative song and she must have been going on and on about something. She'd gone to sleep and I kept hearing, 'Words are flowing out like endless streams…' I was a bit irritated and I went downstairs and it turned into a sort of cosmic song rather than, 'Why are you always mouthing off at me?'… The words are purely inspirational and were given to me – except for maybe one or two where I had to resolve a line or something like that. I don't own it; it came through like that. |
John Lennon – Anthology
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, Let it roll for all its worth.

I've always wondered what he meant by that, like he's a medium or something? Regardless, they are incredible lyrics and arguably Johns best with the Beatles or maybe ever.

Welcome.
I never understood "It's getting hard to be someone, but it all works out." Was John trying to be someone he wasn't?

Maybe he meant being a Beatle, it's getting hard to be someone, or separate of the four. In his Rolling Stone interview in 1970 he talks about how the Beatles were sort of four parts of the same mind, but around the time he wrote Strawberry Fields, they were all going in separate directions and John was probably the cognoscente in terms of realizing their eventual breakup. It's getting hard to be someone (within the Beatles), but it all works out (fame, success, etc), it doesn't matter much to me (at the time, but Yoko definitely changed his mind.)

I was listening "For no One" today in traffic jam, and I realized how sad and hard are the words:
"SHE TAKES HER TIME AND DOESNT FEEL SHE HAS TO HURRY
SHE NO LONGER NEEDS YOU"…
Total indifference…
I've always felt that about someone I don't know.

I forgot about In My Life. I've asked my wife to have that played at my funeral. It's perfect.
I told "All my friends and lovers" to play "Octopusses Garden" at mine. heres how my friend responded to the news.
Prudence: When I die, you must promise me something very important.
Friend: What is it Prudence? Take care of your kids, look after your husband, what?
Prudence: You WILL play Octopus Gardan at my funeral! I dont care about that other crap.
Friend: Ugh.

When I told my nephew that I wanted a few Beatles song to be played in my funeral he said "It's a funeral, not a damn party!!"
About my favorite lyrics, I'm fond of All I've got to do. The lyrics are simple but brilliant, the way he sings about all the things his girl would do for him, and then with just a line to say he would do the same "And the same it goes for me" and then John sings with emotion and you just believe him.

Why don't people take us seriously when we want a Beatles song played at our funeral.

OfflineI dunno Prudence. I think it happens to everyone. My Dad wants "Solamente una Vez" to be played in his funeral and my sisters and I just roll our eyes.
